Been wanting to update this for over a yr now. My first experience of the underwater world. Me and azhar along with 2 other (certified diver) friends headed for tioman. Everything was just perfect. Even the bumpy ride in Izwan's super lowered car. Should had taken novomin man..... Still, thankyou izwan for driving!!!!! Btw... this is my first time going to tioman. Have been to kapas and perhentian before. So i was expecting some small speed boat, half a life jacket and a semi stoned boatman. But i must say that i was quite suprised. A huge fast ferry, airconditioned, seats slightly more comfortable than air asia, and a viewing deck on top. If youre going to tioman for the first time. Do make your way to the upper deck. Huge difference. The ferry ride itself ... read more

Entry: Scott (some clover :) After leaving Singapore we headed towards the island of Tioman on the eastern side of Pennisular Malaysia. Tioman at first appeared to be a very nice little slice of heaven as we found cheap beer, a nice little beach, and some rather decent snorkling from the beach. In fact we liked it so much that we spent our first day just lounging about on the beach snorkling when the mood struck us. To top off the perfect end to a pleasant day we ordered up some fresh barracuda and polished it off with a round of tasty drinks. Afterwards we even found a small Shisha bar to smoke from while we digested. Ahh, the pleasures of a good life. But like those who have suckled to long from the fruits of ... read more

We left Melaka and took a trip over to the Tioman Island, famed for being in the Times Magazines top ten best beaches in the world.....although this was 1971. We arrived at ABC beach on Tioman, and i dont think ive been to a worst beach in England.........no sand.....but loads of sand flies (how does that work?) and rubbish everywhere. Lets just say we made a sharp exit to Salang, another beach further down. To be fair this was alot nicer, although very quiet a the time. The place we stayed at was quite nice, and the lady owner had a pet monkey who was 1 month old. Hands up who knows what Bex wants for Xmas........and we did joke about kidnapping the monkey with the owner! The beach was alot better but there were still ... read more

Well it's not a week and a few days into the trip. We arrived on Tioman (an island off the east coast) 6 days ago and leave today. It has been a deserted bliss here. On the whole, the island is undergoing a government driven over-haul which is destroying the very things that the majority come here to experience. There are huge runways being built on reclaimed land and numerous hotels and duty-free shops being buiolt at a hasty pace. Unfortunately the increased pollution, sewage, litter..etc that is being created is far anbd above anything that the island's infrasturucture can cope with. We did however find the last remaining paradise here in JUARA. It was the stero-typical experience of a tropical island- a wooden chalet over-looking the sea with hammocks and coconut palms everywhere. There was ... read more

September trip 2007 to Malaysia Trip built on frequent flyers so the flights are a little long winded but still - cheap too. Left Adelaide Thursday 20th September at 8.30 am. Flight to Perth, then 2.5 hours till flight to Singapore. Arrived at 4.30 and got a taxi to city as with 2 people same as getting bus/train. Got dropped in Little India and wandered a bit to find accommodation, surprisingly many places full. Shower, drink in backpackers and off to eat - Indian. Singapore has changed dramatically since we were here last in 1992. There is less and less old stuff and more and more high rises. Found it very expensive too, many things not so different to Australia, although some electrical is cheaper. We were told to head to Lavender St bus station to ... read more

I've just spent the last week or so with my parents on the island of Tioman in the south of peninsula Malaysia. At first, we were disappointed. The beach was very rocky, making it near imposible to get into the sea. However, with a day of exploration, we found a nice beach just a 10 minute walk through the jungle. The best thing about Tioman, however, was the snorkelling. From everything I had read, I was expecting the coral to be dead and virtually non-existent. Years of dynamite fishing and uncontrolled anchoring of boats obviously plays havoc with the marine environment. However, with a little effort, you can swim over the dead coral and soon find live, beautiful coral, and a plethora of marine life - we saw stingrays, turtles, reef sharks, puffer fish, boxfish, and ... read more

By 3pm the next day, after a taxi ride and ferry, Sharon had her wish, we were on the beach on Tioman Island. We were a little disappointed at first as the beach itself was not too good. However, after a little exploration we soon discovered sandy beaches within a ten-minute walk along the jungle path. Better still, once in the sea, armed with Mask and snorkels we discovered the coral was much better than the guidebook had led us to believe. We spent the next 8 days lazing around on beaches, snorkelling in the sea, or taking boat trips around the island. Each evening we could be found at ‘Hello Bar’ watching the setting sun sink below the horizon, whilst sipping Tiger Beer.We found several restaurants serving good food, in particular one that pulled out ... read more

Rest and recuperation. Most of our friends back home probably thought that our trip was one long holiday... what on Earth did we need a period of R & R for? Long-term travel however - as anyone who has done it will know - is not like taking a holiday. Without realising it, the effects of heat and constant change; of switching time zones and cultures so often, of going without sleep and making do with a poor diet - could run a body down. Before you knew what was happening, you had opened the door for fatigue and illness to slip in. When you reached the stage where nothing seemed to touch you anymore and you wondered why you kept going, you had probably pushed things too far. Recognising the symptoms before you reached this ... read more

So far I've been unsuccessful in uploading photos but in the spirit of Robert the Bruce I'll try again. Anyway, after Singapore we headed straight for Tioman Island off the east coast of Malaysia. The journey was about 3 hours to Mersing and then another two hours by boat to get to Tioman. The boat crossing was a little rough but we both just managed to keep our breakfast down. Our first stop was a little treat - I had booked three days at Berjaya resort. It was well out of our budget but well wort it. They had have a spa there and Jen took full advantage with several days of various treatments. I wasn't bored while she was been pampered as they also have a dive centre attached to the resort - I got ... read more
