The rest of my Malaysian journeys involved a 4-day long trip to Tioman Island followed by 2 days in the jungle. I'd met a good group of people at a backpackers in KL who were going to Tioman the following day. It wasn't really on my itinerary and it meant a bit of back-tracking, but after a few drinks I thought what the heck. The island was really good fun where tourism was minimal and you could just relax. We basically just hung out on the beach for most of the day until it was happy hour which was about a 20 meter walk away where we'd watch the sun go down. The nearest ATM was about an hours' walk away which really reflected the nature of the island. And it's tax-free too! In central ... read more

Last night in Tioman and we're a bit sad. It's been wonderful here and we're very happy we came. Me and Steinthor have been diving the last 3 days, getting our PADI Open Water diver license. Diving was awsome, we saw turtles - which made me REALLY HAPPY, and we saw a shark....duhh duuuu duhh duuuu..., and some colourful fish aswell, nice coral and lots n' lots more. Poor Gudrun has been feeling unwell, cought herself a chestinfection, but is getting better. Tomorrow we're going to Singapore and then Australia on Saturday.... read more

After our PADI openwater certification last January, it took as nearly 3 months to dive again. The best option for us is to go somewhere near, where we can have 2-3 dives during the weekends. We don't want to go somewhere where we need to take a flight due to the 12 hour clearance. (it's best not to dive within 12 hour after your flight.) Good thing Malaysia has many dive spot within our reach. After 4 hours (approx) of travelling using public bus and ferry Transport, we arrived @ Tekek, Tioman Island. From Singapore, we took the Causeway Bus (CW2) at Kranji MRT. Note. You have to use the over pass to cross the street so that you can ride the bus. The Kranji MRT side is for buses arriving from Malaysia. Clearing the ... read more

City life is invaluable. Especially from a food standpoint. The endless options offered in florescent lit 24-hour Kopi Kedai and at roadside food stands opens a wide window into the cultural make-up of Malaysia. City quarters are divided into ethnic groups, making the act of hunting out Indian, Chinese, and Malay cravings more like an exercise in window shopping. Cross cultural food like Perakan, Portuguese, and Nyonyan fill up all the gaps in between for that "never-had-it before" experience. And while you dine, you are surrounded by 500 years of architectual history, encased in a fence of shiny modern skyscrapers. Elaborate Temples, Mosques, Kongsi, and Churches tell the tale of where these people came from, and how they've endured to protect their cultural identity. It's an essential part of the Malaysian experience to spend a week ... read more

We waited at the ABC jetty (Ayer Batang) for some time in the early morning to catch our boat back to the mainland. Admiring the views for one final time, crystal clear turquoise waters, tropical vegetation and small hilly peaks covered in fir trees. A lovely cat came to say farewell, hoping a few fish might come its way. An idyllic unspoilt island, not commercialised where the locals still continue their traditional ways of life. It took a short 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach the mainland. We would definitely visit Tioman again, perhaps visiting Juara next time, on the opposite side, with its' beautiful tranquil stretch of beach with white sands - a perfect hideaway. We managed to find a small snack at the bus terminal that looked both edible yet hygienic. Then we ... read more

After a 4 hour bumpy bus journey from Malacca, & 1 1/2 hour speed ferry from Mersing, we arrived at Bamboo Chalets - Air Batang Village, Tioman Island. From the boat we could see the peaks of the mountains clad in lush rainforest vegetation topped with misty clouds. As we got closer it soon became apparent of why Tioman Island has been voted as the 10th most beautiful island in the world. The soft sandy white shores fringed by coconut palms and the crystal clears waters of the South China sea are perfect for swimming and snorkelling. As we approached the jetty we could see our accommodation perched on the hills amongst the rocks and surrounded by bougainvillea and tropical gardens - not bad for just over ten pound a night! The view from our balcony ... read more

Evigheter! Solnedgangen var fantastisk, satt paa ... read more

We had decided to stay here for 6 nights, to have a rest and relax. On the first day, we went for a walk to Tekak, the main town on the island. The island is beautiful but as we walked from Air Batang to Tekak, we noticed that some areas needed clearing up a bit. The monsoon season had just ended so maybe the locals were going to start clearing up. It was also very quiet, as we had arrived out of season. Basically, life is very laid back here and the only thing we had to watch out for is not to get run over by a motorcycle as we shared the same pathways! It was also clear, as we walked towards Tekak that a lot of building work was going on, building a marina ... read more

We decided to get up early to make our way to Mersing or Tioman, depending on how far we had to go/how long it took. We still didn't leave until 8am, mainly cos James spent ages packing everything back into his bag (don't tell him I said this!). We had decided to go by bus, apparently the fast and cheap way to go. We asked the guy at the BetelBox hostel which buses to take - he reeled off the bus numbers, very impressive I thought as he was actually right! It was a wet end to our stay in Singapore. It had continually rained the day before and it looked like the same thing happening on this day. Luckily we had waterproofs and also waterproof covers for our backpacks! So off we set for the ... read more
