Crikey, its been a while since I've updated this thing... Anywho. We woke up to our first morning on Tioman and had a very 'refreshing' (read - very cold) shower before making our way to the beach (about 15 seconds walk) and an incredible view. Have a look at some of the pictures - it really is as beautiful as some of the travel brochures show - at least in many or even most places. The chalet was basic, but had everything we needed. We staying in the Mokhtar Bungalows - nice little family run place - with an attached restaurant, where you could get some reasonable food and some excellent Mango Shakes for about 2 or 3 pounds a meal for 2. We walked up to Tekek, which is the town on the island, ... read more

Two weekends ago, we went to Pulau Bintan, Indonesia. It was a 2 hour ferry ride from Singapore but cause of the monsoon season, the waves were really big and my stomach was upset most of the way. Luckily I made it withou having to use the plastic bag. It rained most of the time, but we managed to have a good time by hiring a car and driver who showed us around the island, trying different curries and spicy foods. We also met another group of exchange students mainly from Holland and Germany, so had a bit of fun mingling with them at the bonfire each of the 2 nights. This past weekend was the full moon, which means that all the backpackers and travellers head to Ko Pha-Ngan, an island off the east coast ... read more

After arriving in Kuala Lumpur (KL) and realising why I don't like big cities, people only want your money, not being friendly if there isn't anything to gain. Ok, KL is probably one of the better cities, but compared to a small resort on an island I would always chose the island. Three days we stayed, doing some shopping (I bought the best diving-fins in the world, spending way to much money though) eating and checking out the Batu Caves we decided it was time to move on. A bus to the eastcoast and the next morning on a ferry to Tioman. It is an island which has been in movies and in the 70ies was on the 10 best islands in the world list. We did arrive in the monsun season so a lot of ... read more

Well, we, the intrepid travellers, have returned to the mainland! We have had the HARDEST week! Its just so difficult...enjoying yourself, surviving on approx 4GBP (including accommodation) waking up to turquoise waters lapping sandy shores with the jungle as a back drop....I really don't know how we are surviving!!!! I say that...but it is worth mentioning that the travelling to and from these places is trying.... to say the very least! After a pretty stressful morning picking up our Chinese Visas at one end of Singapore, then catching the Bus at the other, we arrived in Mersing a smelly little village on the East Coast of Malaysia (described as a quaint fishing villlage - rose tinted galsses I ask you?!) to be pounced upon and sheperded into a little shed where we given our accommodation and ... read more

: Tioman Island: It's the most famous island in eastern Malaysia known for its peaceful and beautiful beaches. We took a 30-minute flight from Singapore to the Malay island on a small aircraft that seated about 20 people. One airline company has a monopoly on flights coming in and going out that tickets were the most expensive part of the trip. We stayed at the Berjaya Beach Resort, the main resort in that area. The beach was very tranquil and the water crystal clear. Jellyfish: While on the beach, we noticed that there were tons of tennis-ball size jellyfish around us. Andrew jumped out of the water like a little bitch only to find out that they don’t even sting. With the good news, Andrew then decided to torture the little fellas. He stacked them up ... read more

After the longest journey so far and a journey I swear I will not do again (Sleeper carriages nextime anyone?) Me and Dave finally got to Pulau Tiomen. We managed to get the first speedboat over from Mersing where, when we were thrown off the bus, I managed to watch Reading V Man city, Live at 5 in the morning!! Mersing was also unfortunately where we bid Henson farewell as he had to head back for Singapore to fly home. By the time you read this mate, You'll be at Uni!! Go forth and tell the world of your travels! Its a shame you have to leave us, the KFC stock market value in the far east must have shot up by about 400% while you've been here!! Pulau Tiomen was voted one of the most ... read more

3rd Sept: I repacked all my winter gear into my other bags and left them in storage and repacked all my summer stuff and food into my backpack and found out how I was to get to Malaysia. I took the local bus into Malaysia ($2.50) and through the border and customs then changed my Singapore dollars into ringets about 1S$-2RR and got back on the bus to JB and the main bus centre for lower Malaysia arrived there at about 10.30, and found out the next bus to Mercing(where I had to catch the ferry) was only at 2.30!! I had read it was going to be at 11 but I had forgotten it was a Sunday to that bus didn’t run! So I bought a ticket and waited around in the food court and ... read more

Well, Most of these entries are retrospective looks back, this entry was written in November so forgive my embelishments and exclusions, this is how I remember what I did and for me, my memory is what matters, not reality :) The PGP Steps are only so interesting. Lots of nice people to meet, lots of stuff to take in, but even such an interesting place as this gets a bit boring after a while. And so it was that we the brave few (or so we thought) decided to venture off into the great unknown that is Malaysia. Yeah, ok it really wasnt that momentus, someone said "lets go to Tioman" and everyone else said "ok" and then the planning started. The original group was Alana, Gwen, Dan, Carli (Canadians) Jacob, Alex, me (American) and Kenny ... read more

Hey, how is everyone... good I hope. I just finished a week on Tioman Island which, is just of the east coast of Malaysia. It's a really cool place... pretty quiet but beautiful beaches and lots of diving. Did my PADI open water dive course... it was about $850 ringgits... pretty cheap plus I was the only person in the group. I arrived last Saturday... I didn't know that it was a holiday weekend... of course I hadn't prebooked anything... myself and about ten others were all look for rooms. There were no rooms availible... five of us were able to convince a resort to let us sleep in their meeting room... they through mats on the ground turn the aircon on and changed us 15 ringgits each... it's only $5CDN but I still felt ripped ... read more
