We took a 40 minute bus from Singapore to the Malaysian border then another 3 hour bus from the border town, Johor Bahru, to the coastal town of Mersing. We met up with some other folks from the US and we all booked rooms in the same hotel. We were getting ready for bed when two of the girls we met knocked on our door and asked if we wanted to go out for a drink. Of course we said sure. We found a little chinese place (Muslims don't sell alcohol so it was harder to find a place) and had a few beers. We got to know the girls a little bit and even met some locals. The next day we took the 10 o'çlock boat (which actually left at 11:45) and were on our ... read more

June 2 - June 4 Kuala Lumpur -- Mersing -- Pualu Tioman It didn't work between Tioman and us from the very beginning. We were getting there by bus, leaving from Kuala Lumpur terminal. I had few minutes left before departure so I quickly made it to the boys' room (not like I really needed to, I was going for the piece of mind). When I got back, to my amazement, the bus was already on the move. The doors where opened so I quickly hopped in. Beata told me the driver started the engine just after me leaving and went ballistic when he found out he can't go because one passenger (me) is missing. He started yelling we would be late (not true, the bus clock clearly stated we had 4 minutes left). I wish ... read more

I never thought the words "too many school holidays" would come out of my mouth and in that precise order. Indeed, being a teacher, I LOVE school holidays back home. When I am travelling, though, I can appreciate how everyone else in the world apart from teachers and students really HATE school holidays - everything is booked out from transport to accommodation, and when you finally do arrive in a place, it is packed to the rafters with families toting along dozens of crying kids! As you have probably guessed by now, it is currently the school holidays in Malaysia. Since leaving the Perhentians, we managed to get back to Kuala Lumpur to pick up my new British passport. I went for a bumper 48 page one this time to avoid running out of pages yet ... read more

G'day everyone For those of you that didn't know, i've left Australia again. Have arrived back over in Ireland for around a month or two of work. After that the plan is to head over to the U.S for a few months and then work my way home after that. Stopped in to Tioman island off the east coast of Malaysia to do some diving on the way. It was a beautiful island that has managed to avoid mass commercialisation. There are 6 or 7 villages around the shore of the island but nothing but jungle in the middle so the only way to get to the other side of the island is by boat or jungle trek. Plenty of wildlife including monkeys and fairly large (one metre plus) monitor lizards. Had a great time - ... read more

We left Melaka and have since been to Pulau Tioman on the South East coast of Malaysia. It took us nearly 8 hrs to get there so we arrived in the early evening, having time to watch the sunset on the boat. We decided to grab whatever accommodation was going on the first night as it was hard to find many places in the dark. We got a wooden cabin at the North end of the beach. It was basic but comfortable, however in the morning we woke up to find a lot of ants walking around the place so decided to move. We found some small wooden cabins at the South end of the beach which were cheaper and were right next to the beach, if it wasn’t for the palm trees we would have ... read more
