It didn't work between Tioman and us from the very beginning. We were getting there by bus, leaving from Kuala Lumpur terminal. I had few minutes left before departure so I quickly made it to the boys' room (not like I really needed to, I was going for the piece of mind). When I got back, to my amazement, the bus was already on the move. The doors where opened so I quickly hopped in. Beata told me the driver started the engine just after me leaving and went ballistic when he found out he can't go because one passenger (me) is missing. He started yelling we would be late (not true, the bus clock clearly stated we had 4 minutes left). I wish I had
podlozyc mu swinie (Polish idiom literally meaning giving somebody a pig but it means doing something nasty to somebody.) Him being a Muslim I'm sure he would appreciate the joke.
We got to Mersing too late to catch the ferry and the next one was leaving in an hour. However, this being Malaysia the ferry arrived after 2.5 hours.

Pulau Tioman, Malaysia [Jun 2008]. Sitting there, waiting in the heat, for the first time I was thinking it would be nice to end this whole trip right then.
The island of Tioman got some good rep twice. First in the 50's when it was the setting for the movie
South Pacific and the second time in 70's when
The Times hailed the Tioman as one of the world's top 10 beautiful island. (You must ask yourself the point of publishing such rankings. There are thousands of islands in the world and just the Indonesian archipelago claims approx. 18,000 worth of island share. But I'm sure the author visited all of them so he can really pick the top 10...As for the movie why is it still mentioned every time with reference to Tioman? Nobody's seen it and nobody cares.)
The ferry stopped six times on different spots on the island and we got off on the last one. Tioman looked really nice while we were approaching it but the in the end was a letdown. Being so popular with the tourist one must only wonder why it remains so undeveloped. A stripe of beach, few bungalows, resorts and restaurants. All crammed together

Pulau Tioman, Malaysia [Jun 2008]. close to the shore. The next day we got a taxi boat to another spot, supposedly the most developed, but it was just the same (if not worse). It looked like the locals liked the idea of Tioman being a popular tourist destination but just didn't know how to go about it. On top of that it was raining again. No, it just didn't work between Tioman and us. We stayed only for one day and left the next one for Singapore. I'm sure we would've got different expressions had Tioman had been one of our first destinations. But it wasn't and unfortunately we'll remember it as a disappointment.
