It was much brighter when we got up this morning, in fact it was pretty scorchio. At brekkie we had a little embarassment when they brought out the toast for Robbys beans on toast with no beans, only for us to discover 10mins later the beans were sandwiched inside the 3 slices. We went to hire masks and flippers and it was a little difficult for me to find some as I have childs feet and the ones I found nealry cut off the blood supply to my feet. We went down to the beach about 2 mins from our chalet and snorkelled for about an hour and a half. We saw tons of fishies both little and big, stripy spotty and multi-coloured. The coral at times was really pretty in colours of pink and purple, ... read more

Had a big shock last night when my Mam informed me she's just bought me a brand new car! I literally sat with my mouth gaping open for about 5mins. (ROB: She did). So we were up pretty late, excited and chatty so didnt get our arses out of bed til about 11am. Woke up to a lovely hand made card from Robby. On our way to brekkie we saw some more monitor lizards, we were supposed to go snorkelling but as the weather was quite overcast and a little chilly we decided to go on a walk instead and save snorkelling for tomorrow. We went towards Salang beach (via monkey bay) with no real idea of how far it was. We realised pretty quickly that flipflops + muddy jungle = lethal concoction. There were some ... read more

Left guesthouse before 8, got a shuttle to the bus station and boarded the bus just before 9. Time went quite quickly on the bus reading the paper and listening to music. As usual for malaysian busses it was comfy and on time and much less lethal and erratic than most in SE asia. We stopped for lunch but Rob only had pringles and I raisin biscuits. The journey only took about 5 1/2 hours. The bus stop in Mersing there was a tour office selling the boat tickets for 70RM return so we grabbed these and got a spurt on across town to get the 3pm boat which actually left at about 3.30. Ferry took just over 2hrs and when we arrived there was a signpost at the end of the jetty which had all ... read more

Tioman Island off the south-east coast of peninsular Malaysia is rated as one of the top 10 most beautiful islands in the world and as we approached it on the boat from Mersing, it was easy to see why. The mountainous interior covered in topical trees stretches right the way to the shore with sandy beaches separated by rocky coves and enough flat land for small villages to occupy. As always, getting there is half the fun beginning with a 7am start in KL for a bus ride to Mersing and then a 2 hour ferry crossing to Tioman. Of course the ferry crossing is always fun and somewhat distressing as several times during the trip, it stopped abruptly, shortly followed by crew members running to the back of the boat clutching spanners to try and ... read more

Tioman off the east coast of Malaysia was voted as the most beautiful island in 1970. It was in my readings for many months from the day I landed in Singapore but wasn't that lucky enough to get some consecutive holidays to explore it. Then it was in April 2009 when Mayur, Prasil, Gopi, Siva and Karuna decided to hit the world's 10th most beautiful island. One fine saturday morning we traveled across the Singapore border to Johor Bahru (JB), Malaysia. After spending the last friday night in Clark Quay and with absolutely no sleep we were out of our schedule to reach Johor Bahru Larkin station to take the first bus to Mersing. As soon as the bus doors opened at Larkin, we heard several voices yelling "Get off! Get off! Get Off!" thought it ... read more

04 - 07 October The boat ride was quite pleasant, although we missed the larger part of it thanks to a lovely nap. Upon arrival the mist was still hanging low on the hills, with the sun breaking through the clouds, reflecting on that oh so blue water. Beautiful! Our jetty at ABC was the fourth. After a little walk around we decided to stay at Mawar's chalets. A little worn out but at 35 RM a night a bargain. The food was cheap too and Tioman being tax free, 3 cans of beer went for 10 RM at different places on the beach. At our end the beach was quite rocky at low tide, but at the southern end, just before the headland to Tekek town, the beach was nice. I went snorkelling at both ... read more

We went from Melacca to a town called Mersing, and spent a night there. Then we took a ferry to an island called Tioman. It was a really, really, really pretty beach, with super clear water. You could walk out and snorkel. It was really fun. What I liked best. There was a morning where we went out and snorkeled. It was incredibly clear. We saw coral reefs and a bunch of different fish. Some coral reefs look like brains, or what you would imagine brains look like - cows have never seen brains before. Some coral were really colorful - blue and yellow and red and pink and green. They would have points and flat spaces and humps. They were really neat, and I’ve never seen anything like it, so it’s sort of hard to ... read more

Tioman: An island off the east coast of Malaysia, it was depicted as the exotic "Bali Hai" in the musical South Pacific in 58', then in 1970 was voted most beautiful island, and rightfully so. I took a weekend trip with three other people and it was fantastic. We left on Friday morning traveled across the border to Johor Bahru (JB), Malaysia. We pulled into a bus depot in a public transportation bus from SG, as soon as the doors open I heard several voices yelling "Get off! Get off! Get Off!" I thought there was a fire or a bomb threat, but when I got off and took a second to relax I realized they were just cab drivers very AGGRESSIVE cab drivers! That was a little intense, but if you didn't make eye contact ... read more
