Tioman Island by May Our 5 days on Tioman consisted of basically the same routine. • We’d wake up fix tea, toast and cornflakes in our little beach house’s kitchenette. • Then we’d swim and snorkel for a couple of hours. • Time to shower and go 2 minutes to the next door beach front, open air restaurant and get a drink (Coke, for me) and a little snack (usually French fries for Ella) and play cards or read. • We’d sit there about an hour and then miraculously it was lunchtime and we were hungry, so we’d order more food. (omelettes, toasted sandwiches, rice and veggies). • After lunch maybe we’d walk down to the little store to get more cornflakes or maybe we’d go back to the house to read, write, or rest. August 25 2009 - August 30 2009 Mersing to Pulau Tioman (Tekek pier) (35RM one-way)--2 hours We thankfully got on a proper boat (as supposed to what they called boats to the Perhentian Islands) for the 2 hour trip to Pulau Tioman. The journey was pretty uneventful this time (thankfully) and passing the islands of the Seribuat Archipelago was quite impressive, especially the monstrous mountain of Pulau Tinggi (Tall Island) in the distance. We arrived at Tekek pier on the western coast of the huge and mountainous-looking island of Tioman and had chosen to stay at Juara Bay on the eastern coast. One of the hardest things to choose when trying to find a place to stay on an island (especially a big island) is which beach to pick. If you want any degree of life ... read more

Hello everyone, sorry its been so long - we've been busy relaxing on the beautiful Pulau Tioman for the last 2 weeks.... We finally left Kuala Lumpur on the Friday, complete with new passports and a letter from the embassy explaining our old ones had been stolen and to please let us leave Malaysia! A short 4 hour bus journey later we were in the town of Mersing where we would take the ferry across to Tioman. Mersing itself doesnt really warrant much of a description - if it was a little more charming we were going to stay there a night - but it wasnt. It was also a Friday when a lot of Singaporeans descend on the island for a weekend break so we were advised to book our accomodation in the boat ticket ... read more

The flight to Kuala Lumpur was only 5 hours, but they didn't stop feeding us!! Seriously, every 5 minutes they were walking round passing out nuts, drinks, beer, sandwiches! We even got a huge meal, veggies with rice, a croissant, cake, fruit! Ace :) Kuala Lumpur's a very energetic city, at first it's a bit overwhelming, but it's loads of fun once you get used to it. It was really hot though and we hadn't been to a beach in ages so we got on a bus then a boat to a gorgeous little tropical island down at the south end of the peninsular, called Pulau Tioman. There's not a lot to do here except swim, sunbathe and snorkel or trekking. It's quite a big island but there's only a couple of little villages spread out ... read more

Tioman Island! Not too many pics to show from here, cause I was busy most of the time in scuba diving class! I'm so excited to have finally gotten my certificate, Ive wanted to do it for so long! I love it too, the sea life here is amazing. And the corals too! Scuba diving enables you to see so much more than snorkeling, it is soooo fun! This island is very simple, and under developed which is nice. There isnt even a main road where we stayed, just a walking path! Food was kindof hit and miss. Lots of big monitor lizards, and Bliss said he saw a family of 7 monkeys hanging out! So thats pretty much all I did here, Bliss hung out on the beach since he is already scuba certified. Things ... read more

The journey from KL to Mersing, started off fairly smoothly (much like our journey to Malaysia from the UK…..) we managed to get up on time and check out and even make our way to the right bus terminal and the correct counter!!! According to the timetables and the Lonely Planet the bus journey is meant to take a reasonable 5hours, this seemed like a fairly good duration especially considering we were aiming for the 2.30pm ferry from Mersing to Tioman. With the bus leaving KL at 9am we thought that this could be a little tight for getting that particular connection but it was the first bus of the day leaving KL and so thought we might as well give it ago! So off we went, everything still seemingly going to plan, I mean the ... read more

I am Jack's broken heart, we have now left Tioman... Apparently you go to Tioman for what is under the water, but as much as that is true the island itself is an untrodden, untrampled paradise - there is no urgency to develop here, everything and everyone is mellow. Nothing else matters, there is a healthy disregard for time with no need to run around at such a speed - you may think its lazy, i don't mind i think you've crazy, when you can watch the sunset every night who cares. So, admittedly there is not much to write here because nothing much out of the ordinary happens on Tioman apart from the daily rubbish dump which is duly rifled through by the horde of Makac monkeys facing off against monitor lizards, ferrel cats, as ... read more

Kuala Lumpur was so different to any other city i'd visited in Asia, or different to any other city i'd been too in my life! Its so modern and cosmopolitan but the people are soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo friendly and I have no qualms in saying they are by far the most pleasant helpful kind nationality I have ever come across. Arriving into Kuala Lumpur was a bit of a shock after the basic conditions of laos. We arrived at the Reggae guesthouse which was brand spanking new with air conditioning and really clean with hot showers we thought it was amazing! The first day there we chilled out and had a look around the chinese market around the corner and even went to mcdonalds (which was amazing as it was the first fast food joint i'd been to ... read more

Pulau Tioman Saturday March 28th at 3:00AM a group of NUS exchange students and I took off in a bus for Mersing, Malaysia. We were destined for a relaxing weekend of 2 of Malaysia's most exotic islands ("pulau" means island in Malay) It was an early start but it was the best was to reduce the cost of an extra night's accommodation without wasting the whole day getting there. We arrived in Mersing without and Malaysian ringgit to pay for the ferry. We went to go get some and the ferry left without us. Hmph. We had a few hours to kill so we decided to go out for some food. After some much needed coffee and breakfast, we got back on the ferry and took off for Pulau Tioman! We arrived in the pouring tropical ... read more
