Next stop: Pulau Tioman (a.k.a. Tioman Island)! We arrived around 4:30 in the afternoon and immediately dumped our packs and hit the water. After a four hour bus ride and and hour and a half on a "speed" boat, we were in need! Tioman, or more specifically Air Batang, became our new 'hood. We intended to stay for a night or two, and ended up staying four! Nazri's Place was the name of our set of bungalows, and let's just say it was a HUGE step up from our Singapore experience! We stayed in this lovely little bungalow (with a hot shower, flush toilet and A/C!), and for Melissa's birthday we even splurged for a proper "hotel" room in the main house. The Canadian dollar does pretty well when changed over to the Ringitt (sp?), so ... read more

I didnt want to get up. I really didnt. But opening my eyes and facing the Kopi Susu was an inevitability. Richard, Junko, Anne, Marishka and myself all arranged to go for a trip around the island. Richard was as suprised to see me awake as I was him, with us having been the ones up til gone closing time at 04:30 last night. We hopped into the speedboat and then we were off to see some more of Tioman. First stop was snorkelling just north of Juara, before we stopped on Juara itself. Juara is the smallest and quietest town on Tioman, literally nothing more than a beach and a couple of shacks. It would be a great place to stay on a honeymoon, but perhaps a little quiet for the solo traveller. As we ... read more

Nasi Lemak makes a great breakfast. Coconut rice, chilli sauce and crunchy fish make an unlikely culinary delight, especially with the ubiquitous coffee (from a bag) with slug of condensed milk. After brekky it was time to head out for another days action packed diving. First stop was Fan canyon, and the second was around Soyah island. Two very good dives, but somewhat overshadowed by the night dive which was SPECTACULAR. It was the same site as yesterdays afternoon dive, but in the dark. The early part of the dive was nice, but pretty standard. The real greatness came tho when we headed across to the house reef, turned out lights out and started kicking around. A little like I experienced in Australia the water gave off bioluminescence when disturbed. Unlike in Australia this time I ... read more

Despite having spent a week in Bali I never had a real fresh roti at all, but today I remedied that. People seem to really appreciate it when you speak the local lingo, and the chap at the roti stall was no exception. I chatted to him in Pigeon Malaysian while he turned to small fat dough ball into a huge thin disk, then folded it in a fried it up to make the finished snack, served with a hot vegetable curry - a great start to the day. At about 10:15 I went down to the ferry terminnal which was now bustling unlike yesterday afternoon. I got a small overloaded shuttle out to where the larger boat was moored a little out to sea. The journey out was pretty uneventful (i.e. both pretty and uneventful!) ... read more

According to a Malaysian legend, a dragon princess was once on her way from China to Singapore. She stopped to admire the charm of Malaysia's east coast, and promptly decided to cancel the rest of her journey, take the form of an island, and remain there as a place of shelter and comfort to passing travellers. Pulau Tioman was created! Legends aside, Pulau Tioman is a pretty relaxing place. For the movie fanatics amongst you: its beautiful beaches were depicted in the 1958 movie "South Pacific" as Bali Hai. Phil and I arrived on Pulau Tioman on Tuesday afternoon after taking a coach from Singapore to Mersing, followed by a speedboat, powered by three engines of 200 horse power each, from Mersing to Pulau Tioman. As we had not booked any accommodation prior to arrival, we ... read more

So we left Singapore and headed for an Island off Malaysia called Tioman. Unfortunately for us when we arrived it was the may weekend and a holiday. The whole island was booked up!! After walking up and down for about an hour (well Eoin did, I was minding the bags!) we had two options. Some guy who was about 25 stone said we could stay in his room with him and his brother and they had a big TV or some local woman said we could stay on her porch and we could have a room the next day. We obviously took the second option and got totally wasted that night to overcome our fear of the millions of insects. The area was called Salang and although the lonely planet said it was lively there was ... read more

I woke up in my hostel bed in Singapore with a throbbing head ache. I felt the back of my head where two large bumps brought back a painful reminder of the previous nights proceedings. I would leave Singapore that morning. I caught the first bus to Johar Baru, then 2 connecting buses to Mersing, followed by a one hour speed boat ride to Air Batang on the island of Paluau Tioman off the East Coat of Peninsular Malaysia. Tioman is a sleepy tropical island filled with empty beaches, friendly locals, cheap accomodation and some of the best snorkeling and diving in South East Asia. I arrived at dusk and was taken aback by the stunning beauty of this place. The setting sun seemed to illuminate the beach and surrounding rain forest, the perfect place to ... read more

We flew from Auckland to Singapore (via Brisbane) and landed in Singapore at about 3am. Tried to find somewhere to sleep at the airport and couldn't so ended up waiting for the first train to start at 5am! We went across to Malaysia (after waiting in a traffic jam with 10000 scooters!) and caught a bus up to a place called Mersing (probably equivalent to the Huntly of New Zealand ... but still very interesting!) Stayed in a backpackers in Mersing for the first night and then caught a ferry to Pulau Tioman (where Survivor was filmed I think) where we stayed at this little resort for a couple of nights. All the Malaysian's can't have seen many New Zealanders because we must of had about 100 photos taken of us ... all very funny :-) ... read more

"A Holiday, whilst on a holiday" 18.04.06 We were up early giving ourselves plenty of time to walk to the bus terminal to catch our 9am bus to Mersing in Malaysia, (we could have done this cheaper by catching a local bus to Johor Barhu, then another bus from there. But we decided it would be too much hassle, so we took the direct one instead) As it was we got to the bus terminal just in time and sweating a lot! The bus was nice so that was a good start. We got off the bus just before the causeway to depart Singapore and then off again on the other side to arrive in Malaysia. It was a really easy crossing, no problems, so that was pleasing. From here it was then 3 hours to ... read more
