Went down to the beach today and hired a kayak for an hour. Paddled as close to the next island as we could comfortably get in the time limit before heading back, getting back to shore turned out to be much harder work than the outward journey! Wandered down to the other quieter beach for an hours sunbathing (which is the longest period we can manage) and a dip in the sea. We discussed how best to get to KL tomorrow with Niamh and printed off our Indian Visa forms. In the evening we went to a beautiful restaurant called Kantan which was very close to the hostel. The food was delicious. I had chicken curry noodles and Rob had a noodle dish too. We followed this with a fruit and veg platter with a spicy ... read more

Got up late this morning, seem to be getting into a late to bed, late to rise regime! We decided to go on the island hopping tour in the afternoon. Kat and Jim also booked onto it. We got into a crammed little van to go to the port which luckily was only 1km away. The boat we were on was really cool, smacking off the waves and bobbing up and down spraying us all with water. We went first to swim in the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden. I jumped in and it was realllllly deep. Lovely and warm though it was quite knackering to keep yourself afloat! The island was full of cute monkeys, many of them carrying their babies. They were so non-shy and came really close with one of them even cheekily ... read more

Me, Rob, Ryan and Natalie went on the banana boat today, it was such fun! That is until he span us round and we all fell off and Rob landed his hip on Ryan's head! Boat driver was a little more careful with us from then on! The view of the island from the boat was gorgeous. Ate at the Indian restaurant near the hostel tonight which was delicious and a bargain as we get 10% discount for staying at Zackry's and the service charge is waived. Beat Rob at Snakes and Ladders and at dominoes about 7 times before he won one and we were able to stop playing haha Sat in the bar with Natalie and Ryan tonight (it was their last night at hostel as they're moving to a hotel). January 09th, 2010 Greetings to all, The following blog represents a short overview of the Asian tour that will take us to 7 countries in the next 2 months. We hope you will enjoy our description of what we are experiencing. Some parts of this trip will be in an urban setting, whilst others will be deep in the jungles of the island of Borneo. We will not be able to make daily entries into the blog, because some of the locations we plan to visit have no internet access. We will include photos as often as we can. Some will be spectacular, others more ordinary. Enjoy the ride! Ottawa to Singapore, Jan 05th to 07th. Ottawa to Montreal to Frankfort to Singapore. 19 ½ hours of flying, 7 hours of airport lounging, and 4 ½ ... read more

Rob was a little hungover so I went out for salt and sugar supplies to perk him up a little. We walked down to the beach once Rob recovered and my god the midday sun was sweltering. We only managed an hour but it was enough for robby to get sun burnt (note from Rob: I was wearing sun lotion too!). We walked back down the main street checking out the shops and menus. Sat near the pool for a couple of hours before shower and tea, stayed in the hostel bar for the night with Ryan and Natalie discussing where to visit next and how to get there. Had a few voddys and later on we got chatting to another couple form the UK Kat and Jim who have just completed their teacher training in ... read more

Walked/stooped due to very heavy bags to ferry port. The port building was big and new as it wasnt very busy we could sit anywhere on the ferry. We had a couple of cookies each to stop us feeling sick :) The entertainment consisted of 2/3 of 2010 with no sound. The trip was only 2 1/2 hrs but seemed longer because it was so cold, it seems the air con was set to sub zero. I wrapped the scarf round by whole body, head included for the whole journey. On arrival we were greeted with a duty free plush shopping mall and various men shouting Teksi (taxi). There are no buses on Langkawi, only taxis. We got a taxi driver to our hostel and he undercharged us by a couple of ringgits. The island is ... read more

Day Twenty-One - Ain’t Life a Beach A lie in ended any thoughts of a trip so we went looking for some breakfast further up Pantai Tengah. We found a luxurious resort (Villa Molek) that served a great bit of food for less than the surly and slow Crocodile Shack managed yesterday. The staff were great and considering they have a no kids policy they welcomed us all in. I would think of staying there if we came back. Then it was on to the beach. We got some loungers lined up in the shade and as per, Leanne hit the water. There were no eagles at this end of the beach but we didn’t mind too much. Another few hours of the beach would do, as it was our final chance. Back at Zackry’s, Niamh ... read more

Day Twenty - Searing Sun, Sweeping Sea-Eagles and Succulent Steak Up bright and early was a shock to Leanne & Shannon but we soon bundled them down to the lobby to the awaiting taxi. As we were driving to the airport, the island was rousing with workers jumping into trucks alongside the road. After some airport indulgence at Starbucks to wake us up, we boarded the plane and took our short 30-minute flight to Langkawi. As we came into land we could see some of the 99 islands glisten in the sun and with the pilot telling us the ground temperature was 32*, we looked at the beaches eagerly. Our guesthouse on Langkawi was a delight. Greeted by Niamh, a spritely Dubliner who was wonderfully crazy and funny, we were able to check in early to ... read more

After leaving Ko Phi Phi on New Years day we had to spend the night on the mainland in Krabi town as the trip to Langkawi Malaysia is too long to do in one day. The hotel in Krabi was OK - it was cheap and had a hot shower. Krabi town itself does not have much going on. The next morning we took a minivan which transfered us in the middle of nowhere to a second minivan which eventually took us to the Thai port of Satun. From here we went through immigration and changed our Thai baht to Malaysian ringit (RM). The currency change is fairly easy to calculate - 1pound is aprox 50baht which is 5ringit. So from baht to ringit you just have to drop a zero. After a short ferry ride ... read more
