Day 104 After a disturbed night sleep we set off to the port to get a ticket for the ferry to the island of Langkawi. The ferry left at 8.15am and it was full of people sitting in airline type seats for the 2 and half hour trip. After 30 minutes there was a lot of commotion on the boat as everyone was getting sea sick. Luckily we were OK and arrived safely into Kauh on the popular holiday resort island of Langkawi. After getting some lunch we got a taxi and arrived at our accommodation Zakary Guest House in Pantai Tengah. It was a very hot afternoon but we braved it and went for a walk into the main town. In the evening we went to the restaurant next door and had a delicious curry. ... read more

April 25th - 27th We enjoyed 4 nights on Langkawi, weather was a bit rainy but only for a few hours each day. We walked along the road each day to the 'main' part of the shops. On Mike's birthday we had a fish foot spa- it was so tickly!!The fish eat your dead skin cells and are supposed to suck out the metabolic waste....hmmm. It only cost 2 pounds each for 15 minutes and it was quite fun if not a bit odd to have lots of garra rufa fish nibbling your toes.... There were very good restaurants lined along the road from our hotel and they were all open despite it beingvery low season. April 28th - May 1st Caught the afternoon ferry to Penang. Stayed 4 nights - a nice town which is ... read more

Ok, so we're a little behind - have been in Oz for almost 7 weeks.... but here's our adventure up until our flight to Perth.... the rest will follow...err....soon! So we come to our final few weeks in Asia. After a nice few days on Langkawi, enjoying the good weather, our own cooked food and plenty of wildlife, we caught a boat to Penang for Chinese New Year. Maybe we should have researched a little more into it - I only got as far as “Penang has the highest concentration of Chinese in Malaysia so is the best place to experience Chinese New Year celebrations”. What I should have found out is that the first 5 days of CNY and a few days leading up to it everything shuts down and is all about Chinese repaying ... read more

We finished our time on Au Nang with Chloe with one last night out … more buckets, and lots of rain that night that kept us in one bar for several hours and then a run to a tuk tuk to the local dodgy nightclub! At least Chloe got to dance - but Tanya didn’t last very long and we left Chloe to it…. Pilch singing along with the tuk tuk driver all the way home in the rain! We spent the following morning hungover on the beach getting our last rays before saying goodbye to Chloe and getting a minibus to Lanta. This involved two ferry crossings whilst on the minibus - we both noted we were seasoned travelers as we stayed in the bus rather than sit outside for photo moments and the view ... read more

Langkawi - Malaysia. We arrived during sunrise over Langkawi, very pretty and similar, although not as spectacular, as Halong Bay. It was a scorching day- 34 degrees. We had thought we had booked a fantastic island hopping tour to go on- supposed paradise beaches, simple surrounds and plenty of snorkelling. However, we went into our little pile of excursion tickets to find we had not got around to actually booking it! Gutted, we wanted to see the fishes! Never mind, as we approached it looked a very pretty place and thought it would be nice to do our own thing. We had to wait for all those tour people to get off first and it was 9;30 before they put on the shuttle buses for us ‘do it aloners’. It was soooo hot as we arrived ... read more

So when you're staying in Thailand for a long time, you have to take time out at various stages to perform the biggest exercise in futility...yes, a Visa run. You get to travel for 10 hours on various speedboats, buses, taxis, donkeys etc to get 4 stamps in your passport. The accountant in me has worked out that each stamp cost me around AU$150, once the cost of food, travel, accommodation & general supplies is taken into account. The stamps aren't even that pretty!! Anyhoo, to make this exercise a little less futile, three of us divers decided to make a holiday of it and go for 3 nights to a little tropical island in Malaysia near the Thailand border. Yes, it seems ironic to require a holiday from living on a tropical island...and even more ... read more

So, we arrived in Langkawi a day before our house was ready but luckily our hosts Marc and Di let us stay in their spare room for the night! We were all ready to watch the Spurs Man U final when we learned of the awful break in at the Brewery. We were both pretty devastated by the news and relieved at the same time that no one was hurt and that Barclay was safe! My beautiful engagement ring - Gone!! In the end we drank far too many medicinal jack Daniels and totally missed the final, although I think Tel was glad he didn’t watch it in the end! The next morning we woke to find our new Dutch friends had arrived and we moved into Pondok Keladi 2 ready for the imminent arrival of ... read more

The last blog finished with Holly and I lounging on a beach in Langkawi. You will not be surprised to hear that we spent the next week on that very same island, putting back our departure each day due to raging hangovers and the gravitational pull a place like that has on travellers. As I write, we are in the Cameron Highlands, in the centre of Peninsular Malaysia, a small town in the mountains, surrounded by jungle and all the crawly, bitey things that dwell within them. We should have travelled more. But it’s our party and we’ll lie about and drink beer if we want to. A tax-free haven meant cheap beer (about 30p for a can o’Tiger) but all the budget accommodation was booked up by the time we got there so the money ... read more

And another one.. just to bring you up to date with where I am, should you care, before I head off to another country and open a new chapter in my scintillating adventure. I headed to Langkawi, a Malaysian island, which you can catch the ferry to from Thailand. After being told the bus wouldn't leave until 3.30, despite the timetable saying the next one leaves at 3.00, we were forced to pay a higher fee to hire the entire bus between us other wise we would miss the ferry. i.e they were blatantly scamming us, on the official bus as well. We somehow managed to refrain from slapping any smug heads in though and made it to the boat on time. Langkawi was alright. It's referred to universally as 'a duty free island' which just ... read more
