First impressions - BOILING. 35c and 90% humidity. Short taxi journey took us from Kuah Port to Zachry's Guest House on the west of the island. It was extremely basic but adequate for our beach break. As the photos demonstrate we did sweet F.A. Lots of reading, sleeping, sunbathing and drinking Tiger beer. Again we were successful with our temporary loan of the sun loungers belonging to a nearby 5 star hotel......until yet again we were rumbled by their security staff (jobsworths) and told to immediately vacate the loungers - "YOU ARE NOT RESIDENT,GET OFF LOUNGER, LIE ON SAND!" We met some interesting travellers in the hostel, some of which were booked in for 6 mths + (?!) we were convinced that they were on the run/ex-cons who had gone 'under the radar'. A little less to post about this time as we've been completely relaxing since getting to Langkawi island! After a night in Georgetown, we got a lift from one of the owners at the Crystal Guesthouse for 60p each to the Ferry which was leaving at 8.15am. We got onto the ferry, to which we found an indian family had taken our seats, but only so they could sit together so we sat in two of their seats. Before the ferry departed, funnily the ferry company had a very easy job of just assigning people to seats when they boarded but they failed big time. Everyone who got on after us was finding that they had the same seat numbers as other people and the staff on the boat had to try and find them other ... read more

We go the taxi to drop us off at a guesthouse that had been recommended by Mick and Karen who we met in Nah Trang. They had spent a lot of time in Lankawai and couldn’t speak highly enough of this guesthouse, unfortunately they didn’t have rooms until tomorrow so it was back to the drawing board. Kate waited next door in the Gecho guesthouse, which was indefinitely full, while I walked around for nearly 2 hours looking for somewhere else. After traipsing up and down the road we ended up in the guesthouse next to Gecho, OBVIOUSLY!!!! I think the lady in Gecho felt sorry for me as she said that they may have a room the next day. So as the heat had well and truly sapped my energy we rested for a few ... read more

LANGKAWI We arrived at the ferry port, sailing past the big Eagle at ‘Eagle Square’, we grabbed a taxi to Pantai Tengah and Zackry’s guesthouse, which we made home for the next couple of weeks. We were given a double room, but that afternoon they were changing the roof from a noisy one for the summer, to a quieter one that did not tinkle so much when it rains. It is funny, when you are exhausted, how you can sleep through anything! Even a roof being changed. That evening we took a walk up the road, looking for some where to eat, everywhere seemed so expensive but we came across a nice little restaurant in the Sun Mall. It had a ladyboy as the waiter, who was very pleasant and it turned out that she had ... read more

Friday Afternoon was spent on a little trip to Kuala Lumpurs Batu Caves, A Hindu Shrine in the mountains to the North of Kuala Lumpur City Centre. We took our first bus ride which wasn't that bad ie we got the right bus and arrived without any drama. The bus dropped us in the middle of a busy intersection so we had to manouver our way through traffic. We eventually got to the safety and were greeted by a huge golden staue and 270+ steps up into the mountain!! The cave itself wasn't what we were expecting to be honest a little disapointing, in fact I was more interested by the hoards of monkeys checking us out. You can see their beedy little eyes spying for stuff to steal, when they realise you have nothing, you ... read more

I headed to Langkawi an Island norh of Penang with the ferry...It is a nice 3 hours ferry ride...If you have time I would suggest it...I met a couple of people on the ferry who were on a days journey to Langkawi, I asked if I could join them on their excursion and they were more than happy to reduce their cost...So at the ferry station adjacent to the Eagle square, we hired a taxi for 100 Ringgit to drive us and show us around the Island for the entire day. One thing that is interesting is that the taxi, trishaw , tuk tuk drivers hold a wealth of local information as far as places to see and to relax, to the local cuisine and restaurants. Si our first stop was a location noth oft he ... read more

Welcome to Langkawi! This is a fabulous island in nothern Malaysia. The people are a local Malay, Chinese, Indian and Middle Eastern. Heavy Muslim presence. It's the Canada of Southeast asia. Needless to say the food is incredible, and eat seafood daily. We even bought a Wok so we can cook our own fresh seafood on the beach. This combined with the Satay chicken, fresh pineapple and cheap prices makes eating an event every day. The nicest part about this country other then the beachfront villa for 40 cdn dollars a day is the people. They don't hound you when you walk down the street as in many tourist based countries. Bali was nice, but constantly being baraged by locals wears thin. Langkawi is much different. You seek things rather then be seeked. Drove (not rode ... read more

The night train was a big bit of excitement for us all, especially Phoebe who struggled to contain herself. We had booked a sleeper carriage, leaving KL Sentral at 9.30pm and arriving in Arau at 8.30am the next morning. Our beds were converted seats complete with privacy curtain and actually kind of comfy! No one slept particularly well though, once you get over the train noise there's still other people talking/snoring, the train sounding it's horn every now and then, and the worst thing for me....coping with the cold as it was air conditioned to a chill! I ended up getting my thermals out from my pack at 3am, and slept better after that....didn't think I'd be needing them in Malaysia! We decided to hire a car while in Langkawi, as it's a decent sized place ... read more

A delightful place this. Gone are the showers of Singapore and the clouds of Kuala Lumpur. We're further north here so I suppose it's a bit like Darwin in the southern hemisphere (ie with a rainy season and a dry one.) There has to be some rain sometime to sustain the rain forest. We're getting used to the heat a bit more now, but yesterday lunchtime we'd had enough heat for one day after descending on the cable car to the little shopping area below. And not a traditional pub or cafe in sight! We ended up drinking the local Coke and Lemonade! The macaque neighbours squat under our floorboards (between the stilts) and climb all over our roof and verandah at dusk and dawn. And they have very little fear of humans. If we stare ... read more

We were conned by the taxi driver and the railway officials on our departure from KL. But it was a brilliant con! We planned to get the (rickety) bus from the bus station back to the airport (60K out of town). But the taxi driver delivered us to the new, fancy central station instead. It didn't look like a railway station when we arrived, but they offered to take our cases AND issue us with boarding cards if we agreed to take the luxury train service to the airport instead of the bus. Mary didn't resist the arm twisting very long and I'm not made of sterner stuff any longer! So it was a very civilised departure and NOT very expensive. Langkawi is a different world. We're stuck on the edge of a rain forest on ... read more
