'How would Santa Claus know where to find us?' was my biggest preoccupation with being in Villa Molek, Langkawi, for Christmas morning. If this was the only issue, it gives you an idea of the level of luxury we were surrounded by. We had reserved these villas back in Australia, promising ourselves that we would be good to ourselves for a few days around Christmas. The luxury didn't come cheap, but it was so nice that it took the edge off being away from home for these special days. We had to rise early to be in time to take the only boat that runs from Penang to Langkawi. Standing at the Port at 7.30am there was a small problem with processing our reservation. It was quickly resolved and we were bumped up to a slightly ... read more

In early November 2009, I have been invite by my so called famous places in Malaysia, Langkawi. To be frank, I never been to Langkawi before, because I keep on thinking that the beach is no nice such as east coast island, and I always compared this island with Redang, Perhentian and Tioman. But it totally turn out. White sandy beach, calm and such a good places to visit. It located about 1 hours by flight from Kuala Lumpur, and roughly 7hours by overland. So I choose to use Airasia for this time. It only short visit so i need to minimize my travel journey. It quite luxurious for me, because I got chance to stay at Meritus Pelangi in pantai Chenang. Feel a bit different, since I never feel so extra ordinary comfortable during my ... read more

We decided to have a wee holiday (!) so jumped on a cheap Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur to the tropical paradise island of Langkawi!, off the northwest coast of peninsular Malaysia. It was quite hard to find accomodation on the island as the Malaysian school holidays had just started so we had to stay in 3 different hotels on 2 different beaches during our 12 night stay! Our first hotel, AB Motel, was our favourite and the cheapest as it was located right on Cenang beach. It was really cloudy for the first few days but then we had glorious blue skies and sunshine for the rest of our stay! Cenang beach is the main tourist beach on the island. Although it's popular it doesn't feel too busy or crowded and has a really ... read more

Well, I am back on my travels and have been so for over a week. I am only now getting down to my 1st Far East blog but I will hopefully be more regular in my updates going forward.... The journey over to my parent's boat in Malaysia is quite an undertaking - I flew Aberdeen to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur and then Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi. On arrival, there was a short taxi and ferry trip to arrive at my final destination of Rebac Marina. Thankfully, the journey was all very comfortable and I slept most of the way (which may have been somewhat thanks to a few V&Cs at Schipol airport). The only disruption to the otherwise pleasant travel was a few snorting/choking/sneezing disease-ridden (male) passengers - why are some men so disgusting? ... read more

So am I mad for going off and joining three strangers on a boat?? No madder than they were for inviting a stranger on to their boat...... So Friday morning rolled around and I rocked up at the Breakfast Bar and as soon as I sat down the guy behind the counter just nodded at me and I nodded back. I had been here the previous two days and after day one he knew my order so within five minutes I had a coffee and a bowl of fruit (no banana), museli and yogurt in front of me. Just as I started tucking in Rob and Fiona rolled up and sat down and joined me - Rik had stayed behind to do some jobs on the boat. We all had a laugh about Wednesday night and ... read more

So having got myself a ridiculously cheap flight with Malaysia Airlines (£12) I flew to Langkawi with the intention of staying a few days before heading into Thailand. Tuesday afternoon I landed and made my way to a hostel that had been recommended to me. It was a strange feeling to be back on my own again and in basic accommodation. I ended up with a single room with ensuite so it was a gentle re-introduction for me. That afternoon I wandered around the town of Pantai Cenang. Wednesday morning I got up and went off for breakfast. I decided that I would investigate the cost of renting a car for the day as it was probably going to be the easiest way to see most of the island as there is no public transport on ... read more

Langkawi We arrived at our hotel, the colour of the reception was a strange baby pink colour and we thought OMG why did we ever leave Thailand. The hotel room was completly vile also, with the bathroom a horrible yellow and brown colour. We felt as if we had arrived in M&M land, for all that wants to know exactly what I mean by that then contact directly as it may offend. We went to an underwater world which cost us about 7 quid to get in and wasnt really worth the money, it was the only attraction to see nearby without paying a fortune on taxis so we went anyway. One of our evenings we spent in an expensive harbour with amazing looking overpriced yachts, 1 of which had its own staff on board. I ... read more

Friday 21st August / Skipper’s log day 7 There is no such thing as paranoia - F.X Leach, 1969 OK I feel good because I’ve told JL that tomorrow I will disembark from our trip and he seemed cool with it. I thought that I’d have the chance to leave today and when I realised it would be another night on board I thought “nooooo” but at the moment the water is calm and the sun is strong with a slight breeze so things don’t feel so bad. Although it was calm last night I still found it difficult to sleep. I like to sit on the cockpit reading with my torch until I feel ready to go below deck to sleep. But outside it was pitch black and there were lots of near sounds I ... read more
