Langkawi’s many islands are ringed with countless stretches of beach. Some have white sand, some have golden. Some are hotspots for watersports, some are secluded getaways. Some are located along the most luxurious resorts imaginable, others appeal to backpackers on a budget. We couldn’t hope to experience anything resembling a representative sample of the full scope of Langkawi’s beach life in a single afternoon, so we made the decision to check out two very different beaches: the popular Pantai Cenang strip, and the serene Pantai Kok. Pantai Cenang is lined with dozens of restaurants, with most offering seafood freshly caught from Langkawi’s waters. Shops offer everything from trinkets and souvenirs, to sandals and swimsuits (for those w... read more

Having decided in Krabi that we were in need of a change of scenery we headed off to our next destination..... Malaysia. We sailed (literally) into Langkawi on Saturday 25th July with great hopes for the Malaysian leg of our trip and we were not disappointed! The differences between Thailand and Malaysia were instantly obvious as soon as we got off the boat. The ferry port itself was like an international airport with duty free malls (did I mention that Langkawi is a duty free island? It’s shopping heaven!) and food courts and a bowling alley?! We had taken a chance by traveling into Malaysia with no Malaysian currency; we figured that this wouldn’t be a problem as we would be able to get to a cash point at the port. We hadn’t accounted for the ... read more

…Uh, which way is the beach? Considering the relatively small size of Lankawi, you wouldn’t think that getting lost on the way to something as big as the beach was possible. But for the heroes of the Malaysia.com team, nothing is impossible. After a few wrong turns, we were well off the beaten path and found ourselves cruising through a tiny village. When we pulled over to get our bearings, we found ourselves at the edge of an enticing looking neighbourhood market that was just getting underway. Dozens of stalls were set up offering all manner of food, and locals were busy picking out their favourite dishes. Ian caught the aroma of some satay sticks cooking nearby, and was out of the car and heading towards them before anyone could stop him. We decided to make ... read more

Staying at evergreen laurel hotel, no 2 hotel on list. Did cooking course last night, no active just demo, diappointing but still ok. We caught a quick morning flight from KL to Langkawi, an archipelago of sandy tropical islands off the north-west coast of the Malaysian peninsula. We were instantly greeted with a blast of gorgeous sunshine as soon as we disembarked the plane. We’d made do without sunscreen thus far, but we were definitely going to need it today. We decided to rent a car to make the most of our limited time on the island, but hit a snag when this happened: One replacement key later, we were set to check into our beach-side resort, then head out to explore. We wanted to visit the gia... read more

Went straight to Oriental Village from the airport, where I got the cable car to get a 360 degree view of the island! Absolutely stunning! Can't tell where the sky ends and the sea begins on the horizon as they are the same colour. Got very lucky with the weather because it was actually monsoon season here when I went (25th June). Basked in glorious sunshine under a clear cloudless sky all day! I know I'm a brit, but I got kind of annoyed waiting in the queue for the cable car with so many Aussie's and other Brits squarking in my ear. They were hugely concentrated here and I gotta say I would much rather be in the company of natives as I have got along with them so well since I got here. There ... read more

Back to FGII After a very hectic and stressful couple of months with both of us organising for a few months away from home, it was time for a relaxing sail on Fiddlers Green II. Beautiful sailing around Langkawi until the last night. We had anchored outside of the Marina for one last night to be hit by the worst storm in 8 years. The anchor dragged a couple of times during the night, another yacht was washed up onto the rocks... ... read more

Many travellers planning to visit langkawi would struggle to decide which hotel to stay in. Having visited this magical island on several occasions, I thought I would share some practical information with those who would like to know some first hand experience about a few hotels in Langkawi. First on the list is the Andaman. I like the Andaman. They have a beautiful beach with fantastic views. It is quiet and peaceful. Tucked away at the far NorthWest end of the island, it is a little far to get to. If you like exclusivity at a reasonable price, I think this may be the best choice on the island. The staff were friendly and the service was really good. I also like their restaurants although rather pricey. So, if you are looking for affordable local eat-outs, ... read more

Flying in from Singapore via Air Asia, we arrived in Langkawi tired and sleepless from our night sessions with friends. At the airport, we changed enough money to last us for the Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur legs of our trip. In Singapore and Malaysia, we found out it is always best to change money at the airport as the rates are so much better. For a small airport, there are a lot of shops at Langkawi International, probably because the whole archipelago is duty-free! We also came right smack in the middle of the Malaysia Grand Sale so we were very excited about the prospect of some good shopping. Taxis are not metered in Langkawi but trips in between popular places are fixed rate so there is no stress over haggling over fares. There is a ... read more

Day 20 Today is our last full day on Langkawi and tomorrow we are off to Kuala Lumpur for our last week of this great experience. We’ve learnt a bit more about each other on this trip and it’s all been so very worthwhile. Today we did what is called here Island Hopping. We rented a boat for half a day for the princely sum of RM240 (about $90) and headed off in the boat on the open sea. We were picked up from our hotel and transported to the beach for a wonderful half day of sun and fun. Our first stop was Pulau Dayang Bunting which is home to the lake of the same name. It means the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden and legend has it that childless couple tried for 19 years ... read more
