Day 2 - Delhi I safely at about 10am India time. Flight and pick up both went smoothly. I had an interesting transfer ride from Delhi airport to the, 'Hotel Perfect', with two other girls who are bound for the same trip. Emily & Zoe are both from the London area. Good start! The driver gave us a running commentary on the current festival that is building up. We passed a topless car carrying two people who were representing Lord Savva and his bride. There were constant streams of people dressed in orange carrying really colourful, and dressed water carriers. They take water from the Ganges to offer to The Lord and his bride. For this the people will have their wishes granted. Eg be successful, have children etc. The hotel is quite nice, basic, but ... read more

Day one-Travelling Phew wow.... A very hard star to this journey! I have already named it my, 'Exotic Hotel' journey. A pun on the similarly named film! I had two very difficult conversations with Jonny Crooks and my Dad before I left. John updated me on Di's medical situation, which I am struggling to leave behind, but I know Di was keen for me to do this trip for so many reasons; then my Dad, given the situation with the very recent passing of my Mum, it's hard to leave him behind too! I know it is hard for everyone involved on both counts. I am aware that all my friends and family want me to continue with my plans; the hard reality is that there is nothing I can do about any of it. This ... read more

15 εκατομμυρια να προσπαθουν να ... read more

Indira Gandhi International was clean and surprisingly well ordered, which was good because we were both hellishly tired. After clearing customs, we collected our luggage and then found an ATM so we could get some rupees. That done, we wandered over to the parade of men waiting with name boards. My name was on one of them, and I was thankful we’d arranged our airport transfer in advance of arriving. After shaking hands with Rahul, we were led past the trolley boys and babbling taxi wallahs towards the exit. “How are you feeling?’ Angela asked, looking up at the sky. April was the start of the hot season in India, and already the temperature was nudging thirty degrees Celsius. The humidity was bad too, as was the smell – an all-pervading aroma of smoke and wood ... read more

Well dear readers this is my last blog for my India leg of my trip. We took a flight back from Varanasi back to Delhi. We stopped on the way for a take way breakfast at 9am in the morning from Macdonalds - it was closed!!! What's that all about I ask you. So we tried the fake Burger King and hit the same problems so it was off to the airport for us and we had be brekkie there instead. However no brown bread, no orange juice and we couldn't decide if the beans on toast was the kind we have in the UK or perhaps kidney beans or some other kind of beans on toast. So erred on the side of caution and went for fried eggs, white bread and a milky coffee. The ... read more

Greetings readers, well, today was our first official tour day in Delhi. We had the usual crazy taxi ride to our first location which was the Salaambaa lak trust which is a charity which helps out the street kids of Delhi. It takes them off the streets and provides accommodation, food, medical attention and education for kids who beg, steal and pick pocket and do drugs etc or are in street gangs. Some go back to their parents but many stay and grow up and get an education to go on and do well in Alice. Our guide told us his story of a violent farther who beat him her he didn't earn enough money begging. So he tried shoe shining, pot washing, taking food out of bins to eat, being in a street gang and also ... read more

Well after a 24 hour delay here I am a few days into my big adventure. Due to traffic on the M25 I missed my flight grrrrr! However I rebooked to fly out the same time the next day. I recovered my bag from the relevant area of Heathrow and decided to accept my fate. So I are a hearty breakfast at Cafe Rouge, took the National Express to the Ibis and had a restful day safe and sound. The next day I was awake mega early and headed to the airport and negotiated checking and passport control successfully. The flight to Amsterdam was delayed due to a no show and their bag had to be removed from the plane for security reasons. I thought blimey that was me yesterday lol. I began to panic and ... read more

There is a large sign on the street a little way from here. It is there for no reason - it says ' every experience is designed to make you stronger' Rohit is waiting for me on the street with the tuktuk driver. I had previously booked a guide with a car for this day, but I cancelled because I got to know Rohit yesterday when I agreed to come back at 3pm, to stop his pestering. Yesterday was my first day and I couldn’t do with the hastling and pushing to buy something or go somewhere and in all this craziness of the Karol Bagh area – it would be stupid to go somewhere that I didn’t know, in a city that I had only been awake in for one hour, with a man that ... read more

Recently I was fortunate enough to lead a group to India for two hectic weeks of sightseeing. Totally different to the usual standard of travel we do (luxury instead of backpacking) but got to visit some amazing hotels. If anyone gets the chance, stay at the Leela Palace in delhi... stunning hotel! A place that we visited for the first time was a town called Orcha which is between Agra and Khajuraho. Other than the seeing the Taj, Orcha was the biggest highlight for the group. It is just a stunning place that is not expected. Very limited tourists and if anyone going to India is looking for something of the beaten track this is worth the effort. It was the first time that I have visited Khajuraho also. The only reason to visit here is ... read more
