This place is Frickin crazy my peeps. Having said that, its pretty awesome too. Still jetlagged and groggy, we got ourselves up and squared away travel arrangements for the week before we hired a driver to take us around the city. Yes....I know.... I'm a big proponent of public transit and there is a metro stop ten minutes away...However...there are just certain ways to do things in 115 heat (100 and effing hot as I like to describe it). We had a/c (ish) and a nice driver to take us to several sites. And we employed him for the day. We experienced a Buddhist temple, Humayan's tomb, governmental square (aka somethin official named here), the Indira Gandhi museum, the India Gate and the Lotus temple. Nearly everywhere people asked to take their pictures with us. I'm ... read more

7 months ago a friend asked me if I would like to visit India with her, I said yes, and here we are. the flights were fairly decent and I was not sad to say goodbye to the self induced stress sickness I had fallen prey to the day before I left ( fyi: malaria pills + major stress + a previously empty stomach filled with dill pickle chips will give you one of the worst nights of your life). Amsterdam gets my star airport award as they are now officially the best international airport I've esee experienced. I was able to meet up with E in Amsterdam and say hello in person to a truly wonderful, brilliant person I haven't seen in too long. The flight to Delhi had me sitting next to an older ... read more

India is a land of contrasts (hence the clumsy metaphor above). I'm sitting in a hotel room in Delhi, thoroughly enjoying Inglorious Basterds on one of the English movie channels on Indian TV, before our very early plane tomorrow morning. Now reflecting on my experience of India, it has been across a spectrum of enjoyment, highlighted to me rather conveniently by our journey today from Jaipur to Delhi. Approaching Delhi from the south, we passed through the commercial district, full of shiny new high rise offices and apartments, familiar names adorned the top of the façades. Deloitte, Panasonic, KPMG, Toyota, all the same names as one would see in any major capital city, however it felt like a lie. If I was coming to India on business, doubtless, I'd get to the big BA jet to ... read more

My flight from Bangkok to Delhi left on time and landed on schedule at Delhi airport around midday, Indian time. I have changed time zones and am now four and a half hours behind Australia. Getting through the airport was a breeze. I expected crowds and queues but, in actual fact, the immigration area was completely empty when I approached. So, it took me two minutes to pass through there, grab my bag, change the rest of my Thai baht into Indian rupees, pass through customs and out into the arrivals hall. I was met by a man from Intrepid Tours who had a car waiting to take me to Hotel Perfect where I was staying, in the Karol Bagh area. Well, the hotel is okay, but certainly not perfect! The air conditioner struggles and isn't ... read more

Greetings from Delhi! A little introduction to let you know we’ve arrived safely and that all is well. We've spent the past couple of days settling in, getting a feel for the place, finding our way around the – surprisingly - straight forward public transport system and making attempts to immerse ourselves into the culture… It certainly is a culture vastly different to our own... And considering we were the ONLY white people in/on the WHOLE of the metro (we have so far tried to avoid the majority of the touristy bits...) we really haven't been hassled too much ('stare's' aside) - infact, we've been incredibly impressed with the whole 'Deli' experience. The first thing to hit initially was the temperature… we arrived early morning and it was already in the late 30’s. Many stray dogs ... read more

Eintrag nummer 2!!! Ein bisschen stressig also! Trotzdem sind wir gut erhalten heute früh in Delhi angekommen. Wir hatten uns schon vor der Anreise vorgenommen, mal ein besseres Hotel zu nehmen, in dem wir uns beide etwas erholen können. Immer wieder erweist sich ... read more

On Thursday afternoon, we arrived in Mandawa. The town in the north of Rajasthan is not as touristy as many cities in the South and East of the province yet, which I quite liked. A tour guide took us to some of the havelis (merchants' houses) there. They are 100 to 120 years old and used to be beautifully painted and decorated. However, they are not well-maintained and thus rapidly declining. But still you get an idea of the beauty of the buildings and the wealth of their owners. The next day, we spent six hours on the road again to get back to Delhi. So in the afternoon, we were more than happy to walk a little bit. We caught the Metro to Connaught Place, which is arranged radially around a circular garden. The arcaded ... read more

Tomorrow is our last day of this amazing adventure and what a day it should be as we are going to the Taj Mahal! Mike, Sean, Anna and of course Hannah in New Zealand, Carol, Diane and Husbands in Sydney as well as Owen and his fiancee, Eli who came to share the Thai part of the trip, Moni, Joseph and all the children at Hope Village in Kerala and more recently Sarah and Munbir here in Delhi. New Delhi Our hotel was a little cozy bed and breakfast and they served the most delicious Indian breakfast I had in India so far. We woke up and ordered two meals of breakfast which included, parantha, some lentils, and a veggie kind of porridge, some juice and delicious authentic chai! When we were heading out the old man in charge of the reception asked us if we would stay another night and well we decided yes, but we had to move rooms and tour luck got a little upgraded for the same price to a better hotel )same owner but newer facility) and with a better and bigger room. So after packing up and moving our stuff we headed out to explore Delhi. Our first stop was at a tourist agent to look for a ... read more

Delhi to Agra Our return to the Royal Plaza Hotel was fairy easy. We arrived early at the station and were able to view life on the platform and chatted to a teacher here. On the train we were served food virtually continuously but we weren't really hungry. We chatted to the guy next to us for a bit who appeared interested in where we were going. We arrived at 9.45pm and made our way through busy traffic to the hotel where we were given an upgrade to the Maharaja suite which was delightful but we really weren't going to get much use of it as tomorrow we had to leave at 9, similar to the lovely pool there. After breakfast we met our guide who was Rattin Singh who was a sprightly 75 year old who knew ... read more
