I had already visited all the Delhi classics, the traditional tourist sites. Today, Henri took me to the South of the city, to explore some of the lesser known areas of Delhi, a proper way to conclude my trip. We were planning for an 8:30 AM lift-off. Of course that never happened: we eventually left at about 10 AM for the Qutub Minar complex onboard Anita´s car that had been freshly washed by the local car wash guy. As we were waiting for the car, I did a bit of bird-watching (that had become a slight obsession over the week-end) while some guy was talking on his mobile phone, hanging upside down on the monkey bars. The Qutub Minar complex is famous for its eponymous minaret, which towers above the local skyline, popping high above the ... read more

Lazy Saturday morning. I got up late and let the maid into the apartment while Henri and Anita were still sleeping. I checked my e-mails and my NFL fantasy team and enjoyed just hanging out. For breakfast, we had Nutella on toast with fruit juice on the terrace and Henri showed me how to make some chai (“Oh, you need to cook the water and the milk together!”). We then started an impromptu bird-watching session from his roof top apartment: we saw a bulbul, barbets and a warbler. We checked his guide of North Indian birds and found out that what I had seen yesterday at Jantar Mantar was a grey hornbill. We then headed out to the local post office to send the postcards (I know, it’s been a while since I’ve written them). The ... read more

Henri’s sofa is very comfortable. So much so that after spending two weeks getting early to hit the streets, I would take my time on Friday morning, sleeping like a baby till 9AM and getting ready for an 11AM exit. I had a short breakfast of juice, banana and cashew cookies and took the metro to Chandni Chowk. It was a bit more crowded than Thursday and I got a bit lost. The voice on the metro was one stop off so I got out one stop early, feeling pretty dumb when I just came back to the same platform. People noticed. It was embarrassing. At Chandni Chowk, I whisked my way through the streets with the commuters to reach the main street where I hailed a cycle rickshaw to go the Red Fort. The Red ... read more

My evening in Lucknow was shorter than I had anticipated. Thankfully I double-checked my ticket and the train was scheduled to leave an hour and thirty minutes earlier than I had thought. This left me little time to eat but I had a nice paneer tikka at a rather upscale restaurant (the waiter squeezed my own lemon himself). I rang the bell they left for satisfied customers. I was a little bit tight in terms of timing and I needed to trust a cycle-rickshaw to get to the station on time. Which he did. Barely. His chain came off a record 8 times. He promised me he would get it fixed in the morning. A quick stop at the cloakroom to get my bag and then I ran to my platform where the train was already ... read more

The final day of our tour started with a 6 hour drive back to Delhi. The countryside scenery as we left Mandawa was really pretty but the inevitably slow drive and the heat in the car made it very hard for us to keep our eyes open and we kept snoozing. Everytime we woke up we hadn't seemed to have gone very far. We had arranged with the tour company to take advantage of having paid for the driver for the day and see a couple of the outlying sights in Delhi that we had wanted to see. On finally reaching Delhi we went to Qutb Minar, a complex of ancient islamic building ruins, including the first mosque to be built in India, summer palaces and the tombs of kings. The Qutb Minar itself is a ... read more

Flight number 12 to Beijing ran a little late. We landed in smog. If you are transferring in Beijing you can get a visa stamp for 24 hours. Having 6:30hrs to kill with no likelihood of visiting China anytime soon (we don't agree with the Chinese occupation of Tibet so don't want to give them our tourist dollars) we decided we may as well stick our heads outside and get some 'fresh' air. It killed some time anyway as we got directed to one immigration queue, got to the front only to be sent to another, to do the same again before being put through the diplomatic channel. 'You want to go outside?' 'uh-huh' we replied. So we got to taste Beijing smog for ourselves. We also got a better choice of coffee shops and places ... read more

I Have now arrived in Delhi after leaving Amritsar this morning. Yesterday was a very full in Amritsar so finished feeling rather hot, tired and grubby. I got to Amritsar on Friday evening and since the Golden Temple stays open pretty late, I took the opportunity to pay a night-time visit. At about 10:30 there is a ceremony in which a copy of the Sikh hold book is carried back from its daytime location (in the temple in the middle of the pool) to its storage area. I spent about and hour and a half there wondering around the whole temple complex. To be allowed to enter the complex you must remove shoes (and socks!) and cover your hair. There are many people outside selling temporary hair scarves so I bought one of those and then ... read more
