I have arrived back in Delhi where my journey began. I have a few days now to explore the city and see the sites. Upon entering the city, you can tell it is much more modern than than the other areas of the country I've seen because the drivers actually stop at red lights, and go when it's green - seriously. There is still a lot of horn honking (instead of signalling), but signalling does occur and honking is less. It is another foggy, smoggy day. I don't know how people can live in this country with the bad air. I asked someone today about the tempurature (it was around 30 degrees C), and they said that it is now warmer at this time of year than it used to be since the pollution is so ... read more

After 7 and a half hours and a sleepless plane journey through the night, we arrived at our first point of call - New Delhi, India. Lauren has family in Southern India, however neither of us had been to the country before, and we had both prepared ourselves for the undoubtedly large culture shock that was awaiting us. We were not naive and knew that we were throwing ourselves in the deep end by heading to India first. We had therefore pre-booked all of our accommodation and had arranged for hotel staff to pick us up from the airport. The drive from the airport back to our hotel in central New Delhi was an experience in itself. With no seat belts in the back of the car I can safely say it was the scariest car ... read more

Eighteen-year old Tariq Aziz has a smile that, if it could, would probably stretch the entire way around his head. As it is, he is rarely seen without a sunny, beaming grin and a “Hallo Shannon, how are you?” for me. Tariq is one of the Salaam Baalak Trust City Walk tour guides, giving people insight into the life that he once led on the streets of New Delhi and his journey to becoming the inspirational, strong, funny and kind young man he now is. Tariq grew up in Nepal, the son of a fruit and vegetable distributor and a housewife. Around the age of 5 or 6, his father began drinking, and within a few years was a full-fledged alcoholic who didn't save the money that he made, spending it instead on alcohol for himself. ... read more

Geo: 28.6137, 77.1834So I arrived in Delhi on Thursday 3 Nov 2011, the flight was great, no hassles, plus I managed to get a sleep after I'd had my dinner and watched a couple of movies. I had a window seat and thoroughly enjoyed the views. The first sights were in the morning of the mountains in Afghanistan near Kabul, on the way toward India. I could make out some towns or villages but from this height they almost looked like mere matchsticks laid out on the ground. On my way into Delhi I spotted the impressive Lotus Temple, oddly enough a golf course (which I didn't expect), the city and parks and the lower I got the chaos on the roads, which I was about to experience.I got through customs no bother and got chatting ... read more

Namaste! My "Week with Dengue" was terribly unexciting. It knocked me out a lot more than I was expecting it to even though I took oil of oregano every day! I had to spend a week just in bed resting and watching girly movies and generally just trying to get healthy again so there is not a whole lot to report on or blog about, unless you want to hear about all the movies I watched (think along the lines of She's All That and the Wedding Singer hahaha). One plus that came out of that time is learning about the incredibly kind nature of Aaron, my Australian friend, who every single day either brought me something to feel better or met me somewhere in Pahar Ganj, walking at the slow pace I was forced to ... read more

K - 5.30am on Saturday October 16th saw Mark and I bleary eyed in at taxi heading for Dakshinkali, a shrine dedicated to the Hindu God Kali who many Nepalese Hindus worship through animal sacrifice. The ceremonies start at about 5am and when we arrived at about 6.15am there must have been over a thousand people queuing with their offerings – coconuts and marigold garlands in many cases but also a large number with chickens or goats. Although the atmosphere was thick with incense, in many ways the scene resembled a line at the supermarket rather than a temple. The 2 or 3 queues wound down a gorge to a tiled area with several small alters. There were 2 men there – one dealing with the coconuts and the other dispatching the chickens and goats. The ... read more

It turns out heading back north was for the best, for Divali in any case. Delhi is a very lively city albeit that everyone drives as if they were fleeing an alien invasion. Day was as hot and dry as every other so far, and spent the day at famous Connaught Place, famous because it was built by the British in the form of a huge circus with concentric rings of buildings with up-market shops, but the Indians were not allowed into. It is still up-market with shops that wouldn't be out of place in London or Paris but the actual infrastructure has been seriously neglected and it ain't no Champs Elysee. Being white and European is like honey to the touting bees and I am forced to take refuge in coffee shops, a policed park ... read more

First class is certainly the way to travel. Last night we had our own compartment on the train to New Delhi, with a door that locked and an attendant available should we need anything. The bathroom was still down the hall. We would have enjoyed it more if we hadn't been so exhausted. At least we slept well! When we arrived at 5 am it was already hot. I don't typically sweat much in the Kentucky summer heat, but I was melting when we arrived in this city, and the sun wasn't even up yet. We found an auto-rickshaw to our hotel, Amax Inn, and although I took some photos it wasn't much to write home about. A decent room, air-conditioning and a fan, our own bathroom. Sleep! By the time we made it up we ... read more

Namaskar! I keep waiting for this feeling of excitement and wonder to overcome me the way it did when I first came to India, but I am beginning to realize that it probably won't happen - everything here is familiar, from needing to haggle with rickshaw drivers and fruit-sellers to the taste of curried okra and naan bread. It's a great feeling, absolutely, but not one where I am hyper over seeing an elephant walking in the street or get indignant over having to share a shop with a cow anymore - those things all feel very second nature now, and it's pretty cool! I had my first week, if you can call it that since Thursday was a big holiday, working for Salaam Baalak Trust (which from now on I am going to refer to ... read more

Namaskar all! Well, I did it. I made it back to India just about a year and a half after I was last here. It feels deliciously comfortable and right, with just a touch of "Oh my gosh PINCH ME am I really here?" In true "Shannon Travels Abroad" tradition, I arrived fresh-faced and perky in Delhi at about 5:30 a.m., although without my luggage. Again. I am really curious to know what it feels like to arrive somewhere and have my clothes arrive at the same time as me - hell, I would actually even be ok with my things arriving AHEAD of me! But no, I spent the first 2 hours of my time here with Jet Airways personnel filing a lost luggage claim. I could use some possessions-finding good thoughts and vibes if ... read more
