My Adventure, Around the World

My name's Katie, I'm 23 years old and live in Essex, just outside of London. I work for a Central Bank in the City of London but have now taken a career break to embark on an around the world trip with my friend Lauren!

We left the UK in November 2011 and will return in Spring 2012. We will be visiting India, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Fiji and New Zealand and I will be recording our adventures along the way in my online blog...

Sunday 11th December – Wednesday 14th December After another early morning start it was time to fly the 2 hours further North east to Beijing. I slept the whole duration of the flight, very unusual for me, but w had been on the move constantly for 3 weeks now and exhaustion was kicking in! We had opted to save ourselves a bit of money and fly in to Beijing Military Airport, rather than the main International. We had read that the military base was completely secluded, and although closer to the City, there was often a lack of taxis…hopefully we wouldn’t be stranded armed with our hotel name in Mandarin once again we hoped for the best with a taxi ride into the City! Thankfully there wasn’t a problem, with lots of taxis on offer and ... read more

Friday 9th December – Sunday 11th December We boarded the early 3 hour flight to Chengdu, North-West of Shanghai and slept most of the way, China had been an exhausting experience so far! We arrived in Chengdu and had had the knowledge to ask the girl at our last hostel to write our hostel’s name in Chinese, so we were confident that this taxi journey would be more successful! Sadly this wasn’t the case! The taxi drivers weren’t aware of the hostel, so once again we were dropped by the side of a road and left to hunt for the hostel once again! Thankfully we had been dropped on the right road and it didn’t take more than 15 minutes to find the right place. It was late afternoon by the time we arrived, so we ... read more

Asia » China » Shanghai » Pudong December 6th 2011

Monday 6th December– Friday 9th December We arrived to a cold Shanghai with immediate problems – our taxi driver didn’t understand the English address of the hostel we had written down, so dropped us off where I guess he thought it might be near! We then tried asking several people for directions but it was clearly obvious that the language barrier was going to be a big problem in China! A tip we were given too late, was to always ask someone working at your arrival airport to translate any addresses into Chinese. We still hadn’t got used to carrying our backpacks and other luggage and were completely out of ideas, stuck in the middle of this very foreign City when a woman speaking a little English eventually managed to point us in the right direction. ... read more

Asia » India » Karnataka » Bangalore » Banashankari November 29th 2011

Tuesday 29th November – Sunday 4th December We left Goa for Bangalore on an afternoon flight, however that morning I started to feel ill. I hoped it was just tiredness, however by the time we arrived at our hotel in the city center I was feeling very sick and weak and couldn’t even eat dinner. From the taxi I could see it was immediately clear that Bangalore was a much bigger and more commercial city than any other we had been in in India. There were streets lined with shops, bill boards and fast food restaurants! It was a comforting sight, but the India we’d come to know was still also very much present – manic roads, people and tuk-tuks everywhere and a massive amount of noise! After a very sleepless night it was very clear ... read more

Asia » India » Goa » Panaji November 24th 2011

Thursday 24th – Tuesday 29th November After seeing the Taj Mahal, it was time for us to move further south to Goa. After having some breakfast we were faced with re-packing our backpacks for the first time…not an easy job! It took forever for us both to get everything back in the backpacks and we hadn’t even unpacked properly. We ended up with a lot more belongings in our hand luggage & were completely exhausted by the time our taxi picked us up to take us to the airport…I would definitely have to get better at this! The roads in Delhi never got any easier…we knew what to expect by now, but it certainly didn’t make the journey any less tense! Everything is segregated by gender in India…I learnt this after having people shouting and waving ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra November 23rd 2011

After a much needed sleep, we awoke early the next morning for a day trip to Agra to see the famous Taj Mahal. Setting off for our 5 hour car journey at 7.30am, yesterday’s journeys seemed like a walk in the park in comparison! The traffic in Delhi is unimaginable, as well as the returning chaos of the scooters, bikes and buses from yesterday, it was very clear that there was in fact one traffic rule in India – cows rule the roads! The cow is considered sacred in India, and as such they freely roam around the country and often end up strolling along the roads. They are not daft though – they clearly know that they will not get hit and have complete right of way! It is a very amusing spectacle to see ... read more

Asia » India » National Capital Territory » Delhi November 22nd 2011

After 7 and a half hours and a sleepless plane journey through the night, we arrived at our first point of call - New Delhi, India. Lauren has family in Southern India, however neither of us had been to the country before, and we had both prepared ourselves for the undoubtedly large culture shock that was awaiting us. We were not naive and knew that we were throwing ourselves in the deep end by heading to India first. We had therefore pre-booked all of our accommodation and had arranged for hotel staff to pick us up from the airport. The drive from the airport back to our hotel in central New Delhi was an experience in itself. With no seat belts in the back of the car I can safely say it was the scariest car ... read more

It’s 2am, on Monday 21st November 2011. Suddenly it’s the date that we had been planning for since January of this year, a date that always seemed so far away and didn’t really ever seem real. I am sitting up avoiding sleep, trying to do up the clips on my purple backpack, the same one that the pair of us have spent a full day packing, unpacking and re-packing and that finally, at 2am on departure day, now holds what will be my life for the next 6 months. In January this year, myself and my friend Lauren figured there was a bit more to life and decided we wanted to find out what else the world has to offer…what better way to do that than go on a little trip around the world? And that ... read more
