Geo: 28.6137, 77.1834 I arrived at the Delhi airport late Friday night after a surprisingly fairly pleasant day of travelling. One big surprise, on the second flight from Kuala Lumpur to Delhi was that I was in the first row behind first class: lots of leg room, space for overhead luggage, more room to move around, all things passengers now pay extra for when purchasing their tickets. However, I quickly realized that the other three seats adjoining mine were to be occupied by a family of four, including a baby who had made himself known back in the waiting lounge. The flight was about six hours long; we were to arrive before 10PM, so I thought everything would be okay as it was not an overnight flight. The baby turned out to be delightful. He had ... read more

Accommodation - Taj Mahal Hotel Weather - Warm, misty/hazy/smoggy - 24C After a short midday flight from Newcastle to London Heathrow we then spent the next six hours wandering around Terminal 5. Having never previously been to Terminal 5 we were impressed by the scale of the Terminal, lots of seating, numerous shops, restaurants and bars. We eventually boarded our BA flight to Delhi and left Heathrow, on time, for our overnight flight. Arriving in Delhi on time, tired and somewhat jet-lagged, we found the airport formalities to be relatively smooth and organised and we were soon stepping on Indian soil for the first time looking forward to a fantastic tour around Rajasthan. After arriving at our hotel and having a brief rest, we met up with the rest of our tour group to start our ... read more

After months of planning, saving, daydreaming and talking about India it finally arrived. D-Day. After a tiring but uneventful flight I landed in Delhi, first step into what promised to be the exhilerating, illuminating and insane world of India. Exhausted, sweaty and slightly crabby after having to wait what felt like an eternity to retrieve my pack from the carousel, I stepped out into arrivals expecting to be greeted by a placard bearing my name held aloft by a Pre booked driver. 25 minutes of scanning the multitude of faces all scrutinising me and hollering names of varying nationalities (none of them mine), I admitted defeat and made my way outside, sidestepping the dozens of taxi wallahs, touts and plain conmen all offering to take me anywhere I desired. After locating the Pre Paid Taxi booth ... read more

We were last in Delhi in 2005. Then we saw India Gate, Parliament, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum and the Qutab Minar. So this time we were determined to see a couple more sites. One site which we really wanted to see was Lal Qila, the Red Fort. (Pic 1). Made of red sandstone, this fort was erected in 1683 by Emperor Shah Jahan. The style shows Islamic influence. A wee bit neglected-looking but it seems that some restoration projects are underway. Another stop for us was the National Railway Museum. (Pic 2). The trains in the collection were a bit sad-looking. As is typical of Indian museums, objects are pretty much left to their own demises over time. The concept of preventive conservation of museum artifacts is not evident here. But that is a different ... read more

Flying via Bangkok arrived into the capital of India, Delhi. First introduction to this crazy new world was via a psychotic auto-rickshaw driver, holding on tight as we hammered through the busy streets at maximum speed while he shouted abuse and just missed crashing his flimsy battered vehicle. Breathed a temporary sigh of relief on reaching the hotel, before heading out to the train station to book a ticket to Agra – ambushed by several lying travel agent touts en route, I was diverted via a couple of fake “official government” offices before eventually discovering the genuine bureau back at the main station. Next day meandered through the twisting, stall-lined backstreets of old Delhi, assaulted by a panoply of smells from the stench of festering garbage in the hot streets through to the mouth-watering aromas of ... read more

Midway through the last blog I’d made the comment that the bus from Srinagar to Leh was none too impressive and that I’d return to that later… Evidently I didn’t. On boarding said bus there’d been an argument, the context of which, it being in Hindi, we were not privilege to. However, at the journey’s end (two days that flashed by in a mesmerizing scenic blur) we were approached by an English-speaking passenger and informed that everyone was going to the ticket office to complain: apparently we had all paid for a “deluxe” bus (i.e. one with reclinable seats), but had had to endure a “C” class ride instead. This was all news to us; we’d booked the cheapest bus available and had expected very little in return. Nevertheless we went along. As everyone packed into ... read more

After a good workout in the hotel gym (I am traveling with Leo) and another great breakfast in our hotel, we met our driver (DP) and our guide for the day “Luke”. We headed from central New Delhi to Old Delhi to begin our touring. As we approach Old Delhi you can see how the buildings change. They are older and more compact. Our first stop focused on the Muslim residents of Delhi. Interestingly, although all religions appear to live with each other peacefully in Delhi, there is a definite divide in this part of town, the Muslim live on the ‘left’ and everyone else on the ‘right’. You could see the difference in dress and the stores on either side of the road. We made our way to the Jama Mosque, the largest mosque in ... read more

Today we decided to start our tour by 9:30 am. After shower, we headed to buffet breakfast. Pretty good spread. Highlights were idli/sambhar, yogurt, coffee, fruits, ajwain paratha and omelettes. Driver and guide Raj were ready by 9:30 am. first stop was Juma Masjid. Since it was Saturday, it was open to public. It is in Old Delhi. The roads were narrow and congested. This mosque is a beautiful place. Since P1, P2 and myself were wearing shorts they provded us lungis to cover your legs. We were able to climb up the towers for a panoramic view of the city. After that, we took rickshaw tour of Chandni Chowk. This part of the city consists of spice, nuts and other types of wholesale markets. we hired two rickshaws. It is sad to see these human ... read more

Having a down day to recover from a bit of Delhi belly. I've been somewhat fortunate, escaping any sort of troubles so far. We think it is because the malaria medication I take is also an antibiotic, while E's is only for malaria. Anyway, it always good to have day to relax. To read books, to write and to reflect on all that we've seen and experienced so far. Next up, the temple of love over in the eastern part of the country, will update in a couple of days.... read more

Chris Rock said this very well...." You better act right before you get smacked right". yes, that is a prelude to my monkey love/karma posting. Today was the conclusion of our golden triangle tour and we are now back in Delhi. Along the way we were able to stop on the road and see hundreds of monkeys that are daily fed by passersby. Apparently it is good karma to feed them, so the price of bananas and fruit was quite cheap. Sooooo of course I want a monkey to take one from my hand and this big one comes over and obliges. I guess I took too many pictures, for too long because I swear he all of a sudden gave me the stink eye and feigned like he was going to come at me! Like ... read more
