Arrived safely in Delhi at 11 p.m. local time (Feb. 4) which would have been 10:30 a.m. EST. The trip was long but not awful. I was a bit stressed leaving DC because the flight was delayed and I was afraid at one point that I might miss my connection in Newark, but ended up with plenty of time. The 14 hour flight was as good as such a flight can be in Economy on United Airlines! There wasn't much of a chance to get an impression of India last night. The ride to the hotel from the airport was about 45 minutes and the traffic was much like DC during rush hour....except that there was an occasional cow on the major road and the horns were blowing incessantly....and there was the wedding "chariot " being ... read more

So, we're off again! Another train to Manchester, saying goodbye to the permanent grey that appears to have take over the UK, and arriving just over half a day later in Delhi. Although it was an overnight flight it was a short night and broken by a change of plane so we had very little sleep when we arrived at around 7.30 am Delhi time giving us a long day to get through! We were staying in a residential area in a nice hotel but very chaotic outside and followed the hotel owners directions to get to a nearby shopping centre just to get our bearings and get something to eat. Just this walk was a challenge dodging traffic of all kinds, people and all sorts of things just dumped in the road. The shopping centre ... read more

Delhi the 2nd time back - 3-6 December 2015 We arrived in Delhi 2.5 hrs late as the fog in Kathmandu didn't allow our plane to land in the city until later. All was well as there was a driver to pick us up and take us to our hotel on arrival. It takes so long to get anywhere in Delhi due to the mad traffic. As we didn't get to the hotel until 4.30pm we decided not to do any sightseeing, but to leave it all for the next 2 days. To keep the story short, we found the Hop-on-Hop-off bus was not working on our first full day back in Delhi (Friday) and there were no vacancies on Saturday. We then organised a car to take us around to the sights the second day. ... read more

Delhi in a Day If I am truly honest, anywhere that I went after spending time in Ladakh and the Rumbak Valley, was going to have a lot to contend with. Landing into Delhi with mountain withdrawals was not ideal and I couldn’t get myself to gel with this 20 million population city. I only had a day and was on a quick tour of the city with a guide and an air conditioned van, so it was not quite an authentic experience. I fully appreciate I didn't have a long time to give Delhi a chance! First up on our tour, we visited the Qutb Minar Stone Tower, which was quite a large place and very popular with the local tourists. Lots of stone carvings and pretty surroundings. Our very enthusiastic guide shared with us ... read more

9-10 November 2015 Brisbane to New Delhi After only 2 days back home in Brisbane after a fantastic 7-day cruise to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup, we caught China Southern Airlines at 10.00am. We said our farewells to Sheryl who was with us on the cruise and Kerrie by phone, and Adam drove us to the airport. We are travelling with a local Indian company called Incredible Real India Tours and Travel who have been fantastic in helping us develop this northern Indian holiday. The plane left on time but the connection in Guangzhou, China was 2 hours late. It doesn't worry us too much as we have always got something to do. Memories came back about all the millions of people in China and the great times we had in China earlier in the year. ... read more

Day 28 - good bye Helen and Siem Reap - Hello India! Ahhhh ..... Today is a bitter sweet day. Helen flies back home, I go on to Delhi, India to start phase 2 of my trip. No rushing today, as it is a long travelling day for us both. We started with a hearty breakfast in the hotel. Then back to the room to pack. Helen is taking all my shopping home with her, and some other bits. She has been carrying these since the accident so that I could manage to keep going, I couldn't have done it without her! Her carrying my extra to keep me light hassle a huge difference for me. I am so used to being on my own, but now I've got used to travelling with Helen, so it ... read more

In Delhi most people choose a day tour via private car to view many of the nearby sights. We wanted to do something similar but take our time as we got to grips with this new country, India. Following a very hearty breakfast, we decided we would carry out a ‘do it yourself’ kind of day tour via the metro. This went against the hostel’s advice of hiring out a car but we wanted to see India for ourselves. Learn our own lessons, you know. Walking down the main bazaar in the day time was no less hectic and chaotic than the evening before. Stalls with men shouting out for you to have a look in their shop, far too many vehicles on the street with no sense of a coordinated system whatsoever. It was every ... read more

Five hours over the worst roads in India's most corrupt state coverimg just on 150 kilometres, my spine feels like jelly and my arse throbs and this is just to Madya Pradesh (MP) border. MP has good roads, animals are restrained it is clean and green. There are few horns and traffic is less suicidal so last five hours were almost pleasant. After last nights unpleasant accomodation I didnt know what to expect but the Wildflower resort was pleasant and it seems I was the only guest so every time I moved someone was asking me if I needed anything. We arrived so late in the day that I had to get the lodge to organise my morning safari in to Bandavgarh national park and of course they sent me to the area where the well ... read more

What a crazy place! The flights were fine although the Doha-Delhi one was just over 3 hours, and I was gutted with this as I thought it would be longer and planned to sleep, but between food service and crying babies it didn't happen. I'd done all my ringing round at Heathrow, to say my farewells, and did a bit of shopping and sat down to have some food. It was then I opened the card from Gareth, Michelle, and the boys reading 'There are just some things in life that just have to be done' and I got a little lump in my throat, not quite believing I was off on the first of many travels this year, that I have wanted to do for so long. I got through security no problems in Delhi ... read more

HE SAID... Our time in India was over. We were flying back to Australia via Singapore in the evening (9.30pm), so we prepared for the flight as our last afternoon in Delhi drew to a close. We checked out of Hotel Gulnar at 5pm, jumped into a taxi and headed to Indira Gandhi International Airport. We arrived at 5.30pm, checked in and wandered around the duty free shops. I picked up a copy of Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Omnibus Volume II’ (a selection of short stories from one of India’s best known authors) along with a few gifts and trinkets that we’d not been able to find during our travels. We headed to the food court to try Indian McDonalds, and the Masala Grilled Chicken Burger was surprisingly good. We were fading fast, so we made our way ... read more
