Writing in retrospect I look back on my time in Yangshuo with a warm heart. The blissful summer sun, swimming in the Li, cycling the country roads, hiking moonshaped mountains, exploring abandoned caves. I can honestly say this is one of the most beautiful places in the country and I spent it with wonderful company. The unusually shaped Karst peaks famed for their appearance on the 20RMB note rise from the ground in spectacular abundance. In geographic terms Karst Topography is a landscape shaped by the dissolution of a layer or layers of soluble bedrock (normally rock such as limestone/dolomite).Which means that millions of years ago, the Yangshuo/Guilin area was a gulf and as the earths crust shifted the sea gave way to land and this stunning scenery was formed. As the mountains are made of ... read more

11th October we bid farewell to Lijiang and flew to Kunming. After some difficulty with the directions to the hostel (I blame the hostel directions which told us to get off the bus after 3 stops...this completely messed us up, and they didn't tell us we needed to cross the road to catch the next bus...) and lots of wandering around in the heat with heavy backpacks and sore legs we eventually made it to our hostel. We had a private room, not as luxurious as it sounds, it was a bit smelly, but can't complain for the price. Also the view from the roof top bar was quite cool overlooking the city. We had a yummy mushroom casserole dish which we cooked our meat and veg (not meant to sound rude) in, a bit like ... read more

Back down the bottom of the hill at Ping An, near Long Sheng, I boarded a minivan for Guilin, which happily deposited me at the train station, where I knew a couple of value hotels were located. (I actually ended up in a slightly more upmarket one, The Cairns hotel, for 206RMB. Still pretty cheap and a lovely room. It’s so nice to be in a room where few things are broken, and with a bit more space!) I didn’t do any sight seeing in Guilin, but just wandered around looking for a restaurant. There were plenty of people selling fruits on the footpath, including freshly cut watermelon. I love that sort of watermelon. It was only 1RMB for a big slice, so I had several! Later, when in some other tropical places in China, such ... read more

I wanted to spend my last week in China based in one place and Yangshou had good reports from other travellers and had a mixture great out-door activities and a decent nightlife and also a good selection of hostels but was a small resort town with lots of surrounding countryside. The last three weeks had consisted of some serious travelling in terms of distance and constantly being on the go in some of the busiest tourist places at peak season. Shanghai, Yangzi River cruise, Giant Budha, Lijing, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Dali and Tibet would have to wait until the next trip to China. In Yangshuo I stayed in two different hostels Long Time No See and Trippers which was around 15 minutes walk from the centre. I went to the amazing light show, chilled out in ... read more

Yangshuo – Don’t talk to me about electric mopeds! After a non-eventful bus journey to Yangshuo it was apparent on the bus ride there the mountains and scenery where exactly as described in the guide books. The panoramic scenery that stood before me was incredibly beautiful with mountains appearing from everywhere and somehow the layer of thin smog and mist that covered them made it feel even more amazing and more like a scene from a movie. It was like something out of Human Planet, although it did have one downside, because I could not stop looking at anything around me I wasn’t really paying attention to other minor issues such as the traffic and uneven terrain and therefore often walking out in front of the odd bike or stumbling over a particularly uneven path, thankfully ... read more

Last August... So me and my room mate Zac woke at 0545 Sunday morning and sneaked out the hostel before sunrise at what felt like an unholy hour. We looked down the end of our road and at the cross road we could just make out a busy market at the small cross roads ahead. As we got closer and began dodging the vehicles and manoeuvring the hectic scene I couldn’t tell if people were bartering or arguing about a car accident. I was still half asleep. But Zac soon got us to the park where we would take some steps up one of the incredible finger mountains that they call hills round here. We were soon climbing up hundreds of steps, my heart pounding and then suddenly we were looking over Yangshuo, a stunning view ... read more

Day 113 - Yangshuo After some mild (unnecessary!) panic about losing our room key we left Guilin on a local bus bound for Yangshuo, the tourist destination du jour in South China. We had instructions to get to the hostel from the bus station and we'd even arranged to be met by the hostel at the bus station, which is cool. But we weren't dropped at the bus station, we were dumped somewhere on the edge of town and had to guess the rest of the way. We found it eventually, hidden up a back alley off the main strip and settled nicely into our home for the next 11 nights. We headed out to get our bearings walking along the riverfront, from where we realised how incredible this place is. In every direction you look ... read more

I am very lazy. I have almost done no writing and I am several days and two countries behind schedule. I will work to make this more up to date as fast as possible. On another note, Yangshuo is a fantastic and beautiful place, well worth a visit. I have one more full day here before heading towards Beijing. There have been no real problems with the tour so far except for a storm in Siem Reap that delayed my flight a bit. But I managed to get to Bangkok in time for my transitflight to Hong Kong. Anyway here is my recollection of the trip to the Mekong Delta. Enjoy. Day 11 Farewell Saigon, I will return again soon. I set my sights on the Mekong Delta with start in the town of Cai Be. ... read more

H ... read more

Today we decided to do the boat ride from Yangdi to Xingping. We went to the Yangshuo bus station and easily found a van headed to Yangdi. People at the bus station will ask you in English where you want to go. You just get on the bus/van and pay when they ask for it. I think the trip was a little over an hour but I wasn't paying much attention to the time. We arrived in Yangdi and seemed to be the only tourist milling around. We wanted to walk around a bit to see part of Yangdi before we got on a boat. We walked the dock with a lady following us the whole way trying to get us to use her boat. Then we walked into town a bit to find a bathroom ... read more
