Shana Rheault

So our last day on Caye Caulker was spent eating and sleeping. Thursday we checked out of the hotel and wheeled our bags down the dirt street back to the boat dock. We could have used a taxi which was a golf cart but it was just as easy to walk. We took the next boat leaving the island for Belize City. In Belize City we took a cab to the local bus station and got on the next chicken bus to Orange Walk. No there weren't any chickens on the bus but there could have been. Two and a half hours later after picking up and dropping people off every couple of miles we finally made it to Orange Walk. We had a map with the bus station shown on it but the bus dropped ... read more

Yesterday was a lazy day. We rode bikes around the island in the morning and went for a swim in the pool. We sat on the porch a bit and went for a swim in the ocean. There is a falling down pier that had some cool fish swimming around by it but the whole split area where it is good swimming is filled with trash and beer bottles. We cooked up some of the fish we caught for lunch. It was good but had lots of bones in it. For dinner we brought the rest of the fish to Roses where they grilled it up for us and we just ordered some sides to go with it. Today we went on a full day snorkel tour on a big sail boat. Our first stop was ... read more

We started our reef fishing trip at 8 AM. We hired a guide from Raggamuffin Tours. He had the poles and boat and we were off. Our first stop was for gas for the boat then we drove over to Chapel Caye were the caretakers of the island used a net to catch us a bunch of sardines. We drove out to an area where you could fish and used the sardines as bait. We were catching Silk Snappers. Our guide was catching a bunch just using a line and a rubber finger cover. They don't use poles here because they get in the way. We used the poles though and had fun. About halfway through the morning a storm roled through and we had to pack everything up quick and take cover. The water pelted ... read more

We had breakfast at our hotel this morning since it was included in the room price. We took the hotel van to the marine terminal and checked our bags to Caye Caulker. Then we hopped in a cab and went to the rum factory. The tours only run during the week but we went through the museum and you could see into to themain processing area through a window. We bought a bottle of the three barrel rum (aged three years) the cheap rum was one barrel and there was also a five barrel. There were some bottles of over proof rum which we left on the shelf. We had the cab driver bring us to a grocery store before heading back to catch the boat. This turned out to be a good idea. The food ... read more

This is two days in one since yesterday both Dave and I were sick. It seems we ate a bad apple in Tikal. We postponed our trip to ATM until today. Luckily Pacz let us change dates a 7AM the day of the trip when we called from our hotel. We both went back to sleep until checkout time then packed up to move to our next hotel. We had a three hour wait until we could check into our next hotel, Martha's Hotel so we went around the corner and did our laundry. When we finally got into our room we went right back to bed. We had dinner later at the hotel restaurant, then went back to bed. This morning we made it to the ATM caves. This was really fun. We had to ... read more

It was an early morning for us today. Our sunrise tour started at 4:15 AM. At about 4 AM the howler monkeys started roring. We put on our head lamps and walked to the main lodge where we met our guide Chino. The lodge was suppose to make us breakfast to go but something got lost in translation and they weren't made. We walked into the jungle in the dark to temple IV. This temple had a set of wooden stairs going to a platform near the top. We sat there for about an hour and watched the sun come up. Then we followed our guide to a bunch more temples. We went back to the lodge for breakfast. We went swimming and took a nap before packing up and going to San Ignagco, Belize. We ... read more

Today we went to Tikal using a shuttle we booked when we arrived in Flores. There was some confusion as the company we booked with didn't show up and we went with a different company that traded in our voucher. We arrived and checked into the Jungle lodge. We have been really lucky because we haven't had any of our hotels booked in advance but it is the low season and there are hardly any tourists. We toured part of Tikal on our own today but by 1:30 it was so hot we had to leave. Back in the room we met the resident lizard we promptly named short tail Willie. We hung out at the pool for about 2 hours. The water was hot but felt good after the hot walk. We then went to ... read more

Today we slept in late and then walked to Santa Elena for breakfast which is the town on the other end of the bridge to Flores island. We bought some water at the grocery store and caught a taxi to Ixpanpajul National Park. The cab was basically a motorcycle with a back seat. It seems most of the cab drivers have never been to Ixpanpajul and don't know exactly where to go. We arrived and paid and it turned out we were the only customers there. We spent about an hour and a half walking the path with the hanging bridges. Part of the way through we saw some monkeys sleeping in a tree. They were just flopped over the branches and one of them had a baby clinging to it. We went up to a ... read more

Our trip began with a flight from Miami to Belize City. We picked up our bags and made it out of customs fairly quickly. We got right in a cab and headed to the marine terminal to catch a bus to Flores, Guatemala. we should have gotten money from an ATM before we left the airport but the airport was so small we were outside and in a cab before we even thought to look for an ATM. at the marine terminal we bought bus tickets but we had two hours before it left so we took a cab tour of Belize city and had lunch from a local restaurant that looked like the back of someone's house. Nothing is open in Belize City on Sundays so we were lucky the cab driver knew where to ... read more

Today was our last day in China and the end of our honeymoon. We spent the day at the zoo. We took the metro from our hotel to the zoo. There was just a mass of people outside of the ticket windows and we had to push and shove to make our way to the front to get tickets. We also opted to buy the tickets to see the pandas and visit the aquarium which is located in the zoo but a much higher admission price. Once inside the zoo we realized that it was really big. We went through the panda exhibit and then on to the reptiles which took a long time. We sat down for a rest out side and we became an attraction with everyone staring at us as they went by. ... read more
