Après ... read more

Day 62 Friday 17th August 2012 to Day 74 Wednesday 29thAugust Ni hao (G’Day) from China The last 12 days have seen us visit 3 main areas of China. Beijing, Shanghai and Yangshuo. The last time I was in Beijing was back in 2008 to watch Dunc win a Gold Medal. The number of volunteers around who spoke English during the Olympics made it very easy to get around. Well, it’s not 2008 anymore and all the volunteers have all long gone home. We crossed the Mongolian/Chinese border late at night on the 17th August at the edge of the Gobi Desert. Once we arrived at the border, every train carriage is lifted up and a new set of undercarriage wheel sets are attached due to the different gauge of the Chinese tracks. This process takes ... read more

Wednesday: The first day was basically a day to just relax and have a look around. We could eat meals at the school canteen and they were pretty good, we ate rice with a selection of about 7 different dishes for lunch and dinner and toast or noodles for breakfast with soya been milk. Mel and myself missed breakfast as it finished at 8:50 and I didn't really want it so early as the jetlag was still killing me but we got up and checked out the city. Yangshuo is very beautiful even more so than Guilin, the mountains and the river and although some of the buildings are old and there is alot of construction work going on there are some very nice areas. We checked out West Street where the market it and they ... read more

We arrived in Yangshuo in the late afternoon of August 6th and checked into our hostel to relax a bit and clean up from the rice terraces. We then took a stroll into downtown and had some dinner. It got really busy as it got darker and we didn't walk around too much because we wanted to escape the crowds. The next morning, we inquired about bamboo rafting and booked ourselves in for an afternoon raft ride. We then spent the morning walking the much less crowded streets of Yangshuo before taking a bus out to the raft start point. The raft ride was AWESOME. It was very relaxing - just the two of us and a guy paddling/steering. The views were awesome and we had a couple of fun little rapids to go down (many ... read more

Welcome to Yangshuo, my favourite city in China (as well as Beijing)!! A lot smaller and more rural looking than Guilin this city is an absolute gem. Tiny cobbled streets are full of touristy titbits but are quaint just the same. Then there's also an incredible night life! Our hostel had a roof top bar so we met many people from many countries around the world. Our favourite most interesting person was Zak from Canada who we nicknamed Turtle because he spoke like the turtle in the film Finding Nemo. He has been traveling for absolutely ages all over the world, really cool kid. Our first day there we hired bikes and rode to the Yulong river. Stunning views with peaks lining the riverside. We then jumped in and swam around amongst the bamboo rafts and ... read more

Our last days in China, before leaving for Hong Kong was spent just relaxing and soaking up the atmosphere. We had a absolutely great time so far. This is for sure not the best time to travel in China, since the temperature barely goes down to 28 degrees. But besides that, it is an awesome place to see. Language can be challenging some times, so patience is needed and a good semse of humour added, makes for some interesting days. Make sure you get a aircon room to sleep in, and drink plenty of fluids, and it is plane sailing. We left for Hong Kong very early in the morning, so had to get up at 4 am to catch the taxi ride of 90 km to the airport. Our plane left at 8 am for ... read more
