So we decided to take a bike ride in the area. This turned out to be very scenic. Luckily it was a bit cloudy when we started the morning. A nice cool breeze cools you down as you ride, but as soon as you stop the sweat starts pouring down. The ride starts in town and negotiating your way through traffic until you reach the outskirts of town and start seeing some villagers on their bikes. We decided to use a local guide called Peter, who knows where to go and also can explain to us as we go along. What a beautiful ride along a smaller river called the Yu Long, which eventually flows into the bigger Li river. Took some awesome photos of rice paddies and the overlooking hills just makes it so peaceful. ... read more

Hello! So I realised that I neglected to mention in my last post that i went out on a day trip to the Great Wall of China- kind of a big thing to miss off my list of things I've done! The trip on the Yangtze was good fun and I learnt a Chinese game called Mah jong. I was pretty rubbish at it to be honest, good job we weren't betting for real! After the boat we had three buses, a bullet train and one overnight train to our next destination, Yangshou, which is where I am now. It's a village in Chinese terms- only 300,000 inhabitants. Chongqing, the largest city, has 32 million!! We arrived here midday yesterday and went to a Chinese cookery class in the afternoon. We made egg dumplings, yangshou style ... read more

Day 3 Initially, I was supposed to go north to Longsheng (龙胜) to see the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces (Longji Titian 龙脊梯田) today. That plan went down the drain. Upon speaking to my dorm fellow, the German Marco Polo, I realised that getting there and back takes a lot longer than the Lonely Planet guide suggested, so I decided to leave it for another time. Besides, there'll be plenty of rice terraces to see in Vietnam! Instead, my companion from the previous day, along with Marco Polo and I, decided on taking a bamboo cruise down the Li River (Li Jiang 漓江) while on our way to Guagxi's most famous tourist attraction - Yangshuo (阳朔). The ride over, to the spot where the bamboo rafts were to pick us up, was quite funny. The tour guide ... read more

From Ping Yao we took the overnight train to Xi'An so we arrived in the early morning. It was not quite as comfortable this time - we were in a hard sleeper (not literally a hard bed or anything, just 6 bunks to a cabin, and no door on the cabin - so generally less attractive), and we were on the middle bunks which meant no head room apparently, even for little old me. We slept ok considering, but got woken up a little early for our stop, and then nearly got off at the wrong place! I'm sure it would help to read Chinese symbols, but no time to learn now!! We stayed in a real backpacker hostel in Xi'An, with Western breakfast on offer and flags and handwritten notes all over the wall from ... read more

Well our time of travelling is nearly over. We spent the last day at Yangshuo cycling down by the Li River and in the afternoon, as we waited to board our train, we chilled out and visited the markets near our hotel. The train left at 9.15 at night and we were on the hard sleeper class - that is to say, we were 6 in each compartment separated by solid sides and open at the front. The hard and soft refers to the number of bunks (6 or 4 resp) and not to whether the beds are anything but rock solid!! If it weren't for my trusty feather pillow that I took with me, I would have suffered dearly! And I must admit that ALL beds in China are like rocks!! The toilets on baord ... read more

Just a short paragraph on the beauties of this spot. Population of only about 300,000, which makes it very small by Chinese standards, this is also a very touristy spot with many foreigners around - including us!! The karsts are gorgeous, the people are very friendly and the food is funky - we have eaten water snails stuffed - very tasty, frogs - mmmm not my preference, duck, pork, baby shrimp cooked to crunchiness, taro crispy sticks to name a few things - great place to experiment, We also had to try the beer fish and rice noodles - both are local specialities. Yesterday we went for a Li River cruise - lovely spot to view the karsts which are plentiful and very beautiful. and today we went for a bike ride through the lanes and ... read more

Our $20 dollar rooms with balconies overlooked the river and rice paddies that fed on the river, and it was a perfect summer morning in the deep South of China. There is nothing quite so refreshing as waking up to the sound of running water. With a simple bowl of noodles for breakfast, we walked across the Dong bridges to the village. I was almost contemplating staying at the guesthouse for a year to simply clear my head of decades of city life. After a light lunch we drove to the Longji Rice Terraces, said to be amongst the most beautiful in the world. The lighting and timing prevented us from being able to capture it's beauty as well as in the numerous photobooks that you can purchase on the way up. It is hard for ... read more

My flight to Guangzhou went fine and I arrived about 8pm. After asking a few people I hopped on the right bus to take me into the city, and from the bus station I caught a taxi the last couple of kilometres to my hostel. The hostel was very modern with drinks and food available, and my 6 bed dorm room was fine. I also liked the location, just a short 8 cent ferry ride across the river to Shamien Island and a 15 cent ferry ride to the main part of town. On my first full day I just walked around the city area and Shamien Island. It was a pleasure watching the older people enjoying themselves in the park, dancing, singing, and exercising. The following day I caught the impressive underground to a large ... read more
