16/10/2010 - 19/10/2010 From Kunming I moved on to Guillin. I didn't stay long in Guilling cause Yangshuo, just southwards, was the place where I really wanted to go. But along the way to Guillin you could already notice the landscape changing into these high green hills. Nothing you can compare however with Yangshuo. It is one of the most beautiful places I ve been in China. Everywhere you look you want to take a picture!!! The first two days I went on exploring the Yangshuo surroundings and the Li river on a bicycle. I met a British guy, Paul, who already knew his way around so we did a nice route along the river; coming back through these tiny villages, and ending up crossing the river again using the typical bamboo floats. Second day I ... read more

After an amazing time in Longsheng, we were headed off to Yangshuo which is one of the most popular tourists sports in all of China. Now that is saying something given how big and how much stuff there is to see in China. After a long bus ride from Longsheng, we arrived into Yangshuo and were greeted by a traffic jam that seemed like it went on forever and sidewalks that looked like Times Square during rush hour. Although it was packed, it definitely had a good vibe going on. We checked into our hostel and met the owner Larry who turned out to be a pretty sketchy because the whole time we stayed there, all he would do was wander into our rooms and try and book trip/activities for us while we were in Yangshuo. ... read more

Our first full day in Yangshuo. Hired bikes ($3 each for all day) and rode into town from the Li River Retreat. Climbed a karst called Green Lotus Hill and found one of the oldest geocaches in China. WOW the view! This place is worth comming to China for all on it's own! Tonight we went to the Impressions production on the Li River. This massive production plays everynight of the year and has a cast of over 500. There would have been 5000 people watching tonight and it wasn't busy! This production like the surrounding country side is truely spectacular and worth evey cent. In fact several of the huge Karsts are lit and form the backdrop of the production about the life of the people in this region of China. ... read more

Wednesday, October 6 Days like today are the reason we travel. It was pretty close to a perfect day. John and I plus three friends from the school, AJ, Jen and Ken, headed for the ancient village of Shitoucheng. First we caught the bus from Yang Shuo to Putao. It was very easy since both Jen and AJ speak Chinese. We were let off right at the main intersection so were pretty easily able to find the right road to Shitoucheng. Within a minute, a mototaxi drove up. It is a motorcycle built into a small pick-up. Jen and AJ negotiated a reasonable deal (Y35) so we climbed in. Good thing because it was really too far to walk. So the five of us rode about six miles up a concrete paved road. When we reached ... read more

Yang Shuo We have spent the past week and a half in the town of Yang Shuo in Guangxi Province. We decided to settle here for two weeks to volunteer at an English School called Zhou Yue. We participate in their conversation groups called English Corner for two hours four evenings per week and in exchange we get a free place to stay and very cheap meals. Yang Shuo is a touristy city which speaks plenty of English and has lots to do. It is the home to the beautiful Li River and its stunning karst formations called haystack rocks. The students all want to talk with us to practice their English but are also friendly and helpful. Last night, one student very patiently spent 15 minutes trying to teach me the proper way to use ... read more

I was up early, but hit the snooze button a few times, not quite motivated to rise just yet. My roommate got up and left and then I willed myself out of bed. I went downstairs to get information about my cave tour in the afternoon before setting out. I wanted a western breakfast. I tried to recall where the Flying Dutchman was, since last time I was here I ate there all the time with everyone from CTLC. I found another little place next to a creek. My breakfast included Yunnan coffee, fresh fruit, yogurt, muesli, and mountain scenes. I also had a nice view of a McD in front of the mountain. Almost perfect. I wandered through Yangshuo's back streets--the non-tourist area--where the locals live and got a few good photos of real China. ... read more

... read more

I left Guilin early in the morning to get on the bamboo river boat ride. It was really a boat made of pvc pipe. I when I got on I felt sort of riped off, but I actually saw a real bamboo boat and decided there was no way that would make it down the river and thought it was best they changed things for the better. The trip was a 30min bus ride to the river, 3hrs on the boat, 30min on a golf cart to another bus which took about an hour to get to Yangshou. Yangshou was rather touristy, but it was tourist in a good way. I probably could have spent a couple weeks there. The surrounding area was amazing and you could do anything that you wanted. First I walked around ... read more

From one extreme to the other we are now well and truely back on the backpackers trail. Yangshuo is a travellers mecca - more like a Thai island than what you would expect from China. The town is geared up to accomodate the travellers every whim to the point where even Chinese food has been altered for a 'Western pallete" which to my mind does it a disservice. It is understandable why Yangshuo has become a magnet, the charms are quite clear; with the kaste scenery, Li River, bamboo rafts sailing past the fisherman and their coromorates. The area also has an abundance of caves with funny names, where you can swim in underground rivers surrounded by rock strata that sparkle like millions of diamonds. Given we have now been on the road for almost 2 ... read more
