We've been in Shanghai now for a week and it's gone so quickly. The overnight train from Beijing was for me a pretty horrific experience. I'd been looking forward to my first overnight train trip for 6 months I spent planning the trip. We booked a soft sleeper for about $105 each. This gave us our own 4 berth cabin, complete with individual videos and virtually no space for luggage but it did come with a lock on the door. Well we didn't need the lock as I spent the whole night throwing up outside the cabin. Must have eaten something that my body definitely didn't want. It was beyond doubt the most miserable 8 hours of my life. In the end about every hour I would curl myself around a seat in the passageway, knees ... read more

Forbidden City today. The scale of this place is hard to absorb. 9999.5 rooms (only heaven can have 10000), 1km long and 700m wide. Can't wait to get home and watch "The Last Emperor" again. Sir Reginald Johnston taught the last emperor in the 1920's. Today I thought about him arriving at the city for the first time. He like all those of this time must have been completely awestruck by the sheer size of city. Even by todays standards the gates are incredibly large structures. The other thing that really amazed me was the level of detail in the artwork covering all the buildings. Part of the city was renovated for the 2008 Olympics but there is still a majority to complete. Tonight we visited the Chaoyang Acrobatic Theatre. It was exceptionally good. Don't miss ... read more

Took a 40 minute subway ride followed by a 30 minute local bus to the door of the China Aviation Museum on the outer edge of Beijing. This city is huge! Total cost to the door of the museum 3.5 Yuan or 52 cents! It was raining, one of the few times on the holiday so far, so we took a little electric covered cart from the gate to the ticket office for 10 Yuan. In China there is always somebody ready to make a buck! The museum is on a disused air force base, part of the museum is inside a large hanger with two entrances built into a hill. It's absolutely massive. There's a huge range of a/c on display and vast amounts of information on the walls including descriptions of aerial dog fight ... read more

We woke in Dark Tower this morning around 630am to a foggy very cool and still morning. After a quick breakfast of bananas and cereal we started a slow walk punctuated by many photo sessions. The wall is long, we all know that, but until your on the wall its hard to get a grasp of the size and the enormity of the effort gone into building even short sections. The wall is around 3m wide and what struck me most was the size of the watchtowers. Most of these on their own are very impressive buildings that are very solid, multi storey and would have taken considerable resources. Dark Tower where we slept was huge, these buildings were as little as 60m apart. For enemies approaching this line of defence it must have been utterly demoralising. ... read more

A slow start today then off to the Beijing Zoo to see some Pandas. We had changed our plans prior to leaving Perth leaving out Chengdu (the best place to see them). Our intention was to visit them in Xi'an but we found out while in Xi'an that there weren't any Pandas at the park. Next choice Beijing Zoo. This place is really not very nice! The Pandas were wonderful to see and at least an attempt has been made to look after China's pride. They had a good sized area in which to roam. I'd read about the rest of the zoo and hoped it wasn't true. Sadly, it was all too true. We saw a brown bear being fed rubbish food by children. When they threw the empty packets in too, we couldn't stand ... read more

As I type this an old, dirty but super fast hydrofoil has just past us. We are pulling into a large city right on the bank of the river. Here we will disembark for a tour on smaller vessels of another gorge. Its incredible to look at these countless cities we pass and realise they are all less than 10 years old, having been built since the water rose here more than 100m. Mountains surround us rising several 1000 feet directly out of the river. ... read more

Joined our cruise in Chongqing after an interesting departure from Xi’an airport. Amy had been sick in the car on the way to the airport due to the tail end of a 24 hour bug. As we exited the car Sonia asked for the passports. Due to a gridlocked major traffic jam in Xi’an we had arrived at the terminal with only 20 minutes to spare. So those 20 minutes were spent rapidly searching the bags and racking our brains as to where we had seen them last. As you can imagine we all remained very calm, controlled and analytical in our search for the documents which are required for domestic travel in China….. Ok, ok truth be known as the time ticked towards our deadline and the floor of the terminal starting to resemble a ... read more
