week 2 has been busy. Stephanie (co teacher) and i are starting to figure out the kids. african kids are pretty rambunctious, lots of hitting and crying, not a timid bunch. we've taught them a few songs, they really like the Hokie Pokie, it keeps their attention for at least 10 minutes! yay! the other big winners are Bubbles, that lasted about 20 minutes! and books as well, they don't have many books here, so they really enjoy sitting down and looking at them, a nice break for Mwalimu ( teacher). although they all want your attention to watch them count things in the books.... it's fun, although tiring somedays. Sometimes it's frustrating not being able to understand them, but we are lucky to have Douglas to translate for us. Today i taught an art project, ... read more

PHOTOS - Link Day 1 - Cape Town After arriving into Cape Town at around 11pm and having already spent a night in Sydney airport followed by 16 hours on planes, I passed out in my hostel bed in the hope that I might actually wake up in time to meet my group the next day! Luckily, or not, a fire alarm (false one) at 5am was my wake up call and the smell of sick in the room (god knows who'd done it) was enough to get me up! At breakfast I met most of the group, 23 of us, although remembering their names was going to be one of the biggest challenges of the trip. There's a good mix of boys/girls, couples etc which was a relief after having spent most of South America ... read more

Again, let me begin by saying...WOW! It just never ceases to amaze me how amazing life is. I know I've gone to a good place when diving is involved. Three dives later I've decided to finally do my advance diving course. How cool is that that I get to do it here in Egypt!!! The price is comparable to Malaysia and Thailand, maybe just a little bit more. That's gonna throw a bit ok a kink into my budget but what the hey it really is once in a lifetime kinda thing. I was gonna do the dives anyways. Started out yesterday with the first dive and it wasn't awesome. For one my powered lenses were not correctly done. Bugger. Yep, that's my new favourite word - bugger! lol...picked it up somewhere... So then the ... read more

We arrived in Marrakech (also spelled Marrakesh in case you're wondering) after our 8 hour train ride and went looking for our hotel. This time we stayed at Hotel Amani. Again, we dumped our bags and headed right out to find food. We took a petit taxi (a small taxi) out to the big market and immediately saw that this was very different than Fez. There were tents with tables and chairs set up with just about any kind of food you could want. There were small children, who should have been in bed, out running around begging for money and huffing paint. There were drunks and many more young people than what we had seen in Fez. Where Fez was traditional and seemed mostly untouched by tourism, Marrakech seemed like the tourist hotspot. We ... read more

Overly anxious to reach Krueger National Park for our first safari, it was only natural that our takeoff from Johannesburg would be delayed by one hour due to some schmuck who wasn’t supposed to be on our plane. The man remained defiantly in his seat as the ground and flight crew haphazardly attempted to sort things out. Bitchy stewardesses scrambled around to calm frustrated passengers who demanded to know what was going on. Gene and I grew restless in our seats, worried that we would miss out on the late afternoon safari. After having finally landed in Nelspruit, we met with the flight crew who would be transporting us to the game park and apologized for our delay. I gave Gene a troubled look as I squeezed into the backseat of the 4-seater propeller plane, so ... read more

Nothing too exciting to report yet... I had two meetings today, then came back and did some work at the hotel. Actually I feel crummy, and I'll tell you why. Native Mozambicans can't afford to eat in restaurants or things like that, so I feel like a big heel eating in restaurants. Today, ate in a room full of expats for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, served by the people whose country that we're in. I can't explain really how that feels... But it makes me feel really bad. Especially because we are all here from development organizations. You name it, and they are here - Gates, USAID, UNFPA, UNAIDS, the World Food Programme, CDC, etc., plus all the aid organizations from other countries... But, I can see the Mozambique Channel from my hotel room window, it ... read more

Sorry it has taken a while to write again, my internet access hasn’t been great. Since I last wrote I participated in a two day workshop with religious leaders from Uganda, Sudan, the DRC (Congo), Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania. It was in a beautiful hotel in Entebbe and was interesting. The participants were friendly and welcoming to me...a few even gave me their card. I spoke to a woman who is heading up an effort to form collaborations between women’s peacebuilding groups, which is great. She’s in Kenya and invited me to visit her office when I go there. I also spoke a lot to one of the facilitators who was great. He has worked on conflict resolution all over the world and was really friendly. He was also really great during the workshop at ... read more

Well my first week is almost complete in Sudan. Six days ago I stepped off the Lufthansa plane into what felt like a the blast of a hairdryer... 42 degrees. Wow. But it's a dry heat.... seriously. hahaha. Khartoum is like any other city, it has restaurants, corner stores, and traffic lights. That is where the similarities end. There is a constant lingering smell of buring charcoal, dirt, and heat.... to me, it actually smells different when it gets hot outside... weird. My introduction to the United Nations has been interesting to say the least. What I have seen so far indicates a behemoth of an organization, centered around process, paper work and small feifdoms. It seems each department has it's own agenda, and it is the most important agenda, of course. However, the individual departments ... read more
