So, the movie Hotel Rwanda is based on Hotel des Milles Collines ( a thousand hills because Rwanda is the land of a thousand hills). But, it is one of the swanky hotels in Kigali and has received new found success and popularity after the movie, kind of wierd, I know. But, they have free live music and karaoke by their pool on thursday nights and I think I may be attending. It is strange that this hotel is one of the most populat places in town, as a hotel and as just a hang out place (they have a pool) because of everything that has surrounded it. But, if you think about it this is one of the most hopeful places in the city because this is one of the only places where there weren't ... read more

by Mrs Plod Woke up after a wild and windy (that's win-dee) night. At times I thought the roof of our cottage was going to blow right off! There may have been rain during the night, too--either that, or dust was hitting the metal roof. Unfortunately, neither Ross nor I slept very well. The cottage still smelled rather smoky this morning. We got cleaned up and went over to the farm for breakfast--another good one. We took care of our bill, climbed the ridge up behind our cottage (beautiful view of the little valley) and headed all the way back to Oudtshoorn, so we could get going to Prince Albert. We played my new David Kramer CD--fun to be in or passing the little towns he is singing about! Ross and I both heartily agreed that ... read more

It was an Easy trip. I met a guy named Easy, a dude named Marc, someone named Christian who goes by Harry (harry Christina or something like that), and some random older people. On the way Easy and I, easily met an Aussie from Melbourne named Hellen . At first glance I thought she was a Swiss-German, however after allowing us to sit, it was clear that she was some type of Anglophone. Good times. The plane went fast. Our plane planted itself in the middle of the desert, without much more than a couple buildings and some little sand mountains. Pascal is the coolest guy in the world. We took a comfy bus about 40 min away to the “port.” All the boats were tied to a piece of land by two ropes. We ... read more

A couple hours in the plane, just a dry earth below us, so you wouln't expect this massive waterfall in this place!! We camped at the local backpackers....nice quiet place since most tourist avoid staying in Zimbabwe!! We tried to cook our own meal but the shops where almost empty..so nothing fancy for dinner. Since we weren't here for the food but for the Falls (and rafting the Zambezi) we didn't care!! The next day we were so impressed by these huge Falls! While walking aroun we needed a raincoat...but even with it we got soaked. In one day we managed to do the Zambezi side and the Zambian side.....so in the end of the day we had seen enough water falling down!! Walking aroun and taking photo's was nice...but the next day we were up ... read more

It was a relatively short drive from Dundee to the Central Drakensberg. We decided to do a day walk from Monk's Cowl to see the Nandi Falls. At only 6km and claiming to be relatively flat (relative to what we'd like to know!) we thought we'd have a nice gentle stroll. We must be seriously out of condition from sitting on our bums in an overland truck for weeks, because it was hard going at times and we are used to walking much further at home. The sun came out and it was rather hot walking around the mountains, especially charging up and down lots of steps. Jase was so hot he kept taking his t-shirt off, although he had to repeatedly put it back on as he was scaring the other hikers. The view of ... read more

Our last full day in Swakopmund was spent on the township tour. We visited a witch doctor, an artist, the chief of the local tribe, a local pub, ate traditional food including worms (which weren't too bad!) and some children performed a traditional dance for us. That evening we went to a really nice restaurant on the beach. The next morning we began our drive up to Etosha National park. On the way we stopped at a seal colony where there were literally thousands of seals as far as the eye could see. They live at the seal colony all year around and visitors can get right up close to them. The place regrettably stank of seals but it was awesome to just be among so many of them. We spent most of the day driving, ... read more

Plan.. what plan..? that got thrown out the window along with my brown (no it was never red) hair color. So after my last blog the journey to Victoria Falls lasted a whole of about quarter of an hour. And instead of visiting the world famous, most incredible display of nature, not to missed etc etc Vic Falls... Heather and I found ourselves in the messed up, panic station, politically and economically unstable Zimbabwe. Ooopsie Here’s how the journey changed route. Carrying our 30kg rucksacks stampering km's down the main arterial out of Lusaka with one hand flicking the road for a ride and the other shooing away people trying to sell crap Heather and I managed to conquer the art of hitch hiking. Just when we were re thinking our strategy, and considering to ... read more

Hi, Sorry it’s been so long since the last update. Believe it or not this is the first chance we have had to update the blog since Rwanda. So, where to start… Well since we last wrote we have left Rwanda and headed back through Uganda and Kenya and arrived in Tanzania. Currently we are on Zanzibar Island and I am writing this from a beach hut on the white sands whilst watching people playing volleyball - yip life is tough (NOT!!!) So quick luggage updates: 21 days after arrival I received my luggage (hooray!), however the event wasn’t quite the monumental occasion I had hoped for as the day before our roll mats, sleeping bags, pillows and liners were stolen. As you can imagine that went down like a cup of cold sick (especially as ... read more

Q: What happens when you stick a visual thinker with a language learner and stick them in a car for twelve days? A: This blog Instead of detailing every single thing we did on safari, Shelley inspired me to trade in the pen for the watercolor pencil and draw mind maps (an activity we do with kids at work) of our days on safari in Africa. Admittedly, it's much better than trying to cram in every last detail about 12 days of events and instead, coming up with a visual rendering of our journey, even if it does look like it was drawn by a fifth grader. My initial plan was to have very little text, almost none. Just a few bullet points for highlights with the official stats of the journey (they are now ... read more

Hello from Tanzania We have not posted in some time and this one unfortunately will be brief. After taking a few days off at an undisclosed location we have returned to the mainland and are now in Morogoro, Tanzania. It is about three hours West of Dar es Salaam if that helps. Not much here despite it being a relatively large town but there is a veterinary college. We are spending the week at Sokoine University of Agriculture at there veterinary school (the only official one in Tanzania). It is much smaller than OVC as classes range from 60 to 17 members. More on that after we are done here. As of today only two weeks to go. Seven weeks have gone by very quickly. - Andrew... read more
