Africa » Rwanda July 10th 2007

Well it is getting time to leave Rwanda. I first arrived in Rwanda from Burundi 2 weeks ago. In that time I’ve traveled around Rwanda and even into Congo. Now I’m in the capital, Kigali. In Rwanda I’ve been to Genocide memorials, met good friends, saw Colubus monkeys and seen some spectacular countryside. I like this country. It feels good and safe. Last night in Kigali we walked back from the restaurant in the dark… that never happens in Africa, but in Kigali it is safe. Rides from Hell Here I am sitting on the side of the road outside Nyungwe Park, looking for a ride to Cyangugu. It is about 1800 and the light is fading. I get a lift in cab of the slowest Lorrie. I’m not sure how whenever I get a lift ... read more

On Monday the 2nd we set off for our 3 weeks of travels, with our hair braided so we dont have to wash it, a 25l backpack for 3 weeks and a daily food budget of $4 Australian. Pretty much we are going to arrive in the u.k filthy. Sars, Gabs, Meg and Chels and i were meeting at the Shell station at 7am except we were delayed an hour as the taxi which Meg chose had a detour to the hospital as the drivers pregnant sister fainted. So far we have witnessed a goat hit and killed by our tro tro, almost had to pawn our few valuables to pay for our tro tro, broken down in a taxi on a deserted road at night, escaped from a stampede of elephants and been chased by ... read more

Written from the capitol city, Accra: Two weeks ago six of the senior students spent the weekend with Kirk and I preparing for the arrival of two more visitors. Joel and Cori Lyons arrived from North Dakota June 27th. Having a VARIETY of village life experiences Joel and Cori have now come and gone. Leaving their "footprints" on our lives AND SURELY taking back with them life changing marks on their own lives. During their visit they experienced the finest of West African Cuisine. Joel (to name a few) had experiences in preaching and evangelism in various village settings as well as coaching volleyball and juggling. Cori (a kindergarden teacher by profession) spent much of her time teaching both fun and educational songs to the younger primary school students. In the sports department she oversaw frisbee ... read more

Yesterday mornng we were in Uganda in a nice cosy private cottage room with proper beds and a bathroom! (luxury) - After Four hours of rough, pot hole filled road (in a very cramped mini-van with 11 other people - we whacked our heads probably half a dozen times!), and a one hour border crossing, we found ourselves in Rwanda and in a dorm room with 12 other people on bunks! We woke this morning after a very disturbed sleep at 5am to travel to the Volcano National Parks office to start our Gorilla trek. Our group of 18 people split into three smaller groups as only a maximum of 8 people can visit one family group of Gorillas a day. We ended up in a group with 2 of our fellow travellers, and 2 other ... read more

Africa » Mozambique » Southern » Maputo July 10th 2007

am actually in Maputo for the evening as we move back to the Wildlife College. It was an 17 hour drive from Machipanda to Maputo driving I believe 1400 kilometers. The research turned out really well with a lot of data to interpret upon arrival home. The use of the ground penetrating radar for observing below ground biomass has not been developed very thoroughly for practical applications. The research Abi, Dintwe, a Botswanan forester, the lead investigator Kelly Kaylor and I have been working with the Noggin 1000 to attempt to take strides forward in being able to map the carbon distribution of root structures. This is a really cool device that shows parabolas that represent the relative size of belog ground structures down to a depth of a meter or more. There were two ... read more

Today's Blog is from Michelle Summer 2007: A Journal of My Trip Mon June 27, 2007 One thing I don’t like about traveling is the transportation to get to the place. First we had to take a 2 hour bus to Montreal, then we took a 6 hour plane to France. I barely slept on the plane, it’s too uncomfy. We got a day room at a hotel and we slept for four hours, then we took a plane from Paris to the Seychelles that was ten hours long. It felt like it was never going to end. When we finally got there I felt so wired going through two time changes in two days! And I barely had any sleep. But tomorrow will definitely be more fun!! Tues June 26, 2007 Yesterday before going ... read more

Today, Maura, Nicole, Josh and I decided to go on a sight-seeing tour at the Castle of Good Hope, which is the oldest building in Cape Town. Sadly, it does not look much like Cinderella's Castle, or any castle that you would think of when you hear the word "castle", but instead looks much more like the pentagon built in the 1700s. It's a fort, and it's a pretty cool fort at that! Unfortunately we got there after the last guided tour, so we had to guide ourselves. I think that it would probably have been better if we had a guide, because there were a lot of confusing passageways and exhibits that weren't exactly well-maintained, so we really just mainly entertained ourselves. We climbed up the oldest bastion, and snuck into the bell tower ... read more

HI First i would like to thank all of you for all the nice messages. It is so good to hear from Home. So many things have happened since i wrote last , i hardly know where to begin! First: It is official: i had my first breakdown! It was Thursday night, and were having supper with members from the organization. For the first few days, i had been trying to eat everything people offer me, not to insult their customs. However, the food here is extreamely spicy and for those of you who know me well, know that spicy food and i are worst enemies. So there i was: eating spicy rice, sweating, stomach grumbling, shaking. I decided to take my time.. but that might have made it worse. One of the members of the ... read more

Hello! Ok, major apologies for not writing for so long, but having spent such a long time in the same place (and a pretty small, non-happening place at that) there's not much left to tell. Though now Ive finished I thought I should say something! My days were pretty routine of late, going to the same schools and farmers and womens groups. Its been good though, since we've earned thier trust in us they've shown a real enthusiasm to learn everything we can possibly teach them. They just couldn't get enough of us!! We were really busy towards the end planning lots of events. We had a Youth Conference organised by the head office in Jinja for all placements to attend along with 10 unemplyed youth from thier areas. The idea of the conference was to ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Knysna July 9th 2007

by Mrs Plod Woke up at 7:00ish, and started our day with tea (getting to be a habit!). Had a very nice breakfast at the establishment serving "the freshest coffee in Sedgefield"--Fijnbosch Coffee House. I read Die Burger (Afrikaans newspaper) to Ross and Owen. :) We decided to skip the Tjoe Choo, and explore Sedgefield instead (since we were staying there, it made sense!) After about 15 minutes, we decided that Sedgefield (no offence to any Sedgefielders out there!) is a long strip mall with pockets of houses, resorts and little marshy lakes. Very pretty, but not much to explore--so we decided to head to Knysna, instead. Just 20 minutes or so down the coast from Sedgefield, Knysna is a pretty resort town on a beautiful lagoon which empties into the Indian Ocean through the infamous ... read more
