Hi Folks, As I said in yesterday´s blog, I had the most amazing sleep!! Woke up feeling reallay refreshed and raring to go at Wawa Wasi. Still struggling with my horrible cold, but hope to get shot of that at the weekend!! We had our full compliment of ninos again at WW. Started off playing with the toys again, and then had a lovely surprise just before they had their milk. We received a big soft chute and steps for kids in bright primary colours. Apparently it´s doing the rounds of the WWs and they each have it for three days!! The kids thought it was Christmas and went wild!! Photos attached will show just how much they enjoyed it. Tried to teach them how to line up and give everyone a shot one at a ... read more

I managed to get up at around half past twelve in the afternoon, and was a bit disappointed when Juan explained that breakfast is only available until noon. Luckily, he offered me some bread and cheese instead(well apart from tea and coffee, breakfast only consists of bread, cheese, jam, and butter anyway). As usual it was a nice sunny day, and I went for a short walk in the Botanical Gardens of Palermo before my Spanish lesson. I didn´t see any half naked women as recommended by Monica, but then it turned out she was referring to a different park previously. The lesson again went well, and Monica was again happy to tell me more about Buenos Aires and Argentina. She explained places like San Telmo and La Boca are for tourists and if I want ... read more

Having arrived in Puerto Natales and Lou´s back not fit for hiking yet, we decided to have a few rest days before heading off on the full trek into Torres del Paine. As the town is VERY quiet, we decided booked ourselves onto a day trip to see the Moreno Glacier. Neither of us had really thought about the distance that would be covered. We got on the bus at 7am and didn´t get back to the hostel until 10.30pm..having only spent 2 hours actually at the Moreno Glacier!!...but the scenary on route was amazing, so dramatic and the glacier itself was stunning...well worth the trip..but we would advise making the visit from Argentina, not from Chile! Patagonia is big country.... Off for a four day trek to Torres del Paine...see ya soon Lou & Steve ... read more

Hola mes amigos, Hope that this finds you all well and busy at work - something I´m definitely not missing!! One thing I am missing is agua caliente (hot water)!! No hot showers in the last two days. At the moment I feel like I´d either go into debt or maybe sell my body (joking!!) for some. What I wouldn´t give for a long hot soak in a bath with a lush bathbomb!! Anyway - have a huge confession to make. I ratted on the youngsters today!! After another sleepless night due to them arriving back at the house at 3.30am and installing themselves in the kitchen (right next to my bedroom), a few of us had a word with Rudy (the Ayacucho CCS manager) this morning. We pointed out that the rest of the volunteers ... read more

We left San Rafael on Friday, November 4th and proceeded down Highway 40 toward Marlargue. This was our first day of our Patagonia Road Trip and we were all in great spirits and ready for the long road ahead. After heading southwest for an hour and a half, we took a two hour diversion to check out Las Leñas, Argentina's world class ski resort. The slopes had been closed for about a month but we were impressed by the size and grandeur of the place. After puchasing "la comida" for the evening's asado in Malargue, we headed of toward Bardas Blancas, where we planned to camp. The road was primarily dirt with broken remnents of pavement that must have been paved in the 1950s. We reached Bardas Blancas with about 2 hours of daylight remaining. ... read more

Funny how things turn out. Three days previously Christie and I had been sitting in Hostal Forestal eating our dinner when a lady called Jenny from England sat down next to us, offered us a beer, and started chatting. When she found out about our cycling ambitions she told us how when she had been at the airport in London she'd met a guy called George who was cycling for two years from the bottom of South America to Alaska. I´d asked for his email, which she promised to give me the next day, but then she got robbed at a cafe over lunch and in the chaos that followed she forgot all about giving me George´s email. Which was fair enough I say. Flash forward to this morning. Christie and I pushed our bikes into ... read more

We arrived in Rio the night before Lorna's birthday and stayed in a truly nasty hostel in Downtown Rio. When we awoke we got out of there very quickly and headed to the posh hotel in Copacabana we had booked as a birthday treat. After exploring the area and enjoying the luxury of the hotel we went for dinner and champagne at a lovely restaurant on Ipanema beach. Lorna had sparklers in her pudding and the waiters sang 'Happy Birthday'. Most of our following time in Rio was spent lazing on the beach and working on our suntans. We were in need of some relaxation time after the hectic schedule in Peru and then travelling through Brazil. For the first few days when the weather wasn't so good the beach was quiet, then when it got ... read more

This morning I was feeling a lot more positive, probably because I slept splendidly. At breakfast I bumped into a fellow traveller called Jon, a pretty cool guy, he´s been in Buenos Aires for about two weeks and apart from joining the gym down the street, and chilling he hasn´t been up to much. This encounter almost made me feel guilty about describing the hostel earlier as empty. Juan (one of the guys working at the hostel) was also in the kitchen and he told us a bit about the culture in Argentina, in particular he introduced us to the country´s obsession with drinking mate, a kind of tea beverage that tastes slightly bitter, made of a herb called ýerba´. He seems to drink mate all the time from a wooden cup and a metal straw. ... read more

We had an interesting journey getting to Rio de Janeiro... Arriving about 2 hours early at the airport (as we believed you were supposed to do), we headed for the check-in desk and were a little horrified to be told that our flight had been overbooked and we couldn´t fly until the next day!!! What the!?! So a bit deflated we headed towards another desk where they´d arrange a hotel for the night and compensation for the inconvenience. Maria did a great job of arguing our case (as she would!) and we were more than surprised when they told us we could not only board the flight that night as planned, but that due to lack of seats in economy we'd have to fly Business Class!!! Well, no complaints there!!! Woo-hoo!! So, after a nice glass ... read more

Rio without Sun Day 1 After a triple flight voyage from La Paz to Rio with some very tight connections we breathed a huge sigh of relief when Nicola’s bag arrived eventually appeared on the baggage carousel (it was very nearly the last bag to arrive whereas Carl’s bag had arrived first). It had been some time since Venezuela and we had neglected to take our standard precautionary measures against baggage loss: keep camera charger in camera bag, pack a small package of essentials into each others bags and put all the medicines in our hand luggage. We emerged from the airport to be accosted by a number of taxi touts offering rip off prices. After explaining that we were not American we managed to get the price down to a reasonable rate and zoomed ... read more
