Hi Folks, Was up and ready as usual for Wawa Wasi this morning. Still have a rotten head cold and feeling kinda flat as a result. Frustrating thing is that I am never, ever sick!! It´s so annoying that I´ve now had two colds in the space of four and a half weeks!! Not sure whether it´s due to the travelling at the weekend (down to sea level and then back up to 9,000 feet), or whether I caught it at WW where the kids all have the sniffles!! Went to WW to discover that Andrea (Julia´s daughter) is in hospital with a very bad stomach, and one of Marruja and Eileen´s kids has hepatitis!! Here was I moaning about a cold!! Rufina and Karina were also missing - both sick too!! Seems to be that ... read more

¡Hola! Everyone Hope everyone is still well. Hoping the party for the little man was good and that he got lots of new toys. HAPPY BDAY Ollie! Since my last update i´ve spent the majority of my time in Quito which sounds pretty dull. Though during this time I´ve left the crazy womans house and moved into gringolandia where all the money i´ve spent on spanish lessons hasnt gone to waste with the brits and auzzies in the hostal. Though with another swiss guy at the school, Miguel, we´ve been attempting to talk to the locals more. We get a few funny looks from the barmaids but ended up one night being dragged down to the locals club which opens after everything shuts. It was a bit weird and i think we´ll leave it at that. ... read more

Rick provids the intro, whilst Becky has written the longer more boring stuff! Hola from Rick: Again thanks for all your comments on the previous blog, and yes the sights and sounds of south america are nothing on the joys of spotting a burberry cap and a silky shell suit flash past in a souped up escort xri with the sweet sound of loud bassy R&B. Well everything we have done recently has been at the highest in the world. Highest and largest navicable lakein the world (surely all lakes are navicable?), Lake Titicaca (fnar fnar), highest capital city in the world (La Paz), played the highest golf course in the world and maybe most expensive relative to the Bolivian GDP, where I was particulary rubbish (maybe due to a rather large drinking event the night ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires November 8th 2005

During my trips to Berlin and Krakow I felt rather indifferent about the upcoming South American adventure. I doubt if I can attribute this to some kind of bravery however, as I was evidently too busy to think about it. This sensation lasted until yesterday, when I realised I had to get everything ready, and going to bed late didn't really help, as my enthusiasm deteriorated even further by this morning. I was almost beginning to feel that this trip perhaps wasn't such a good idea, when the thought of going back to work popped into my mind and wasn't overly appealing. The plane from Heathrow to Frankfurt was about an hour late, however this did not stop me from enjoying the brilliant view of the millions if different shades of lights in London (I was ... read more

South America » Argentina » Mendoza » Mendoza November 8th 2005

Sunshine, good food, good wine...without a doubt I can easily say Mendoza has been my fav place so far (we still have Buenos Aires, Patagonia & Rio to go so it could easily change!). We have had just under a week here and i could easily stay longer. Again we haven´t been up to too much as Matt was quite ill when we first got here so I forced him to do nothing to get better (otherwise it spoils my fun!) so we took it easy. Mendoza was detroyed in the late 1800´s by earthquake and fire so as far as the buildings are concerned it is modern, low and on wide streets that are tree-lined. There is obviously a bit of money in the town so it is really pretty. It is also full of ... read more

South America » Ecuador » East » Cuyabeno Reserve November 8th 2005

Yesterday after the monkey excitement, and about 25 minutes before we arrived at the Dracaena lodge, we sailed into the confluence of the Cuyabeno River and a nearby Laguna. Overhead flew two Blue and Gold Macaws, squawking loudly. "Okay," Lisa said, "I've just had my first 'I'm the luckiest girl alive' moment." Today, while paddling down the Cuyabeno River, I thought back to Lisa's comment yesterday and agreed. I am the luckiest person alive. We spent the first half of today paddling downstream in two canoes -- Lisa, Ami, Brenna and I in one, and Diego, Rod and Juliette in the other. Earlier Walter, our motorized canoe driver, while towing the two smaller canoes, had hauled and deposited us upriver so we could have a leisurely trip downstream. For the most part it was a quiet, ... read more

South America » Brazil » São Paulo » São Paulo November 8th 2005

We spent two nights in Sao Paulo en route to Rio. It was, as expected, not a particularly nice city. It was busy and didn´t feel especially safe, particularly at night. We checked out the view of the entire city from ´Edifico Italia´(their equivalent of the Empire State Building), the city is truly enormous. Not much else to say about Sao Paulo really, at least it broke up the long journey to Rio. ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Uros Island November 8th 2005

After a hearty lunch of Shepards Pie in the Irish bar (not quite local food , but heh) , we left Cuzco and headed to Puno on the shore of Lake Titicaca. From here we hooked up with SAS Travel and their tour of the lake. First was the Uros Islands, floating islands made of reeds. When they got a bit soggy, another 5 " of reeds were laid on top. Even the locals boats were made of reeds. Very primitive, although they did have solar panels for their electricity, a gift from the Peruvian government! From here our boat continued to Amantani Island. We were introduced to Olga who was to be our host for the night. Her house was made of bricks held together with mud and straw, although our accommodation seemed better than ... read more

This isn´t how it´s supposed to be happening! I´m supposed to be sitting here drinking wine bringing you up to date on the fantastic time we had in Mendoza and how we´re all organised for our assault on Patagonia en bicicleta, but no ... bloody George Bush comes and steals my thunder by causing more strife in 24 hours than I managed to in a week in Bolivia (I was quite put out by this and almost tempted to head back to Buenos Aires so I could claim some of the credit). What´s more, we found out Friday morning that we were to be made homeless because the hostel had booked our room out from under us. Even I was struggling to see the bright side of this, though I did get to practive my newly ... read more

South America » Peru » Ica » Ballestas Islands November 8th 2005

Hi Folks, Final update re the remainder of the weekend!! We stayed overnight in Paracas and got up early on Monday morning to take a trip to the Ballestas Islands, just of the coast of Paracas in the Pacific. We boarded a 25 person speed boat for the trip. The water was pretty choppy to say the least and the ride was a little rough. Caroline and I ended up absolutely soaked from the spray, but it was well worth it for what we saw. Key highlights were the penguins, the pelicans and the sea lions. I´ve never been so close to them in the wild and managed to get some great photos (well, I think they´re great!!). On the way back, a pelican flew in front of the bow of the boat and over the ... read more
