Hello all, Thinking about all my friends in Church today and especially Girls Brigade. It´s the Armistice service in Church. Hope that we had a good turnout from the girls, that they behaved, and that it wasn´t too cold at the service at the Cenotaph. It´s a beautirful day here today. I spent most of the morning on the roof reading and relaxing. Have been trying to find out where the Methodist Church is in Ayacucho, but no one sems to know. As a last shot, there is a religious stall in the market. I´m going to take the name of the Church down there and see if they can point me in the right direction. My roommate Caroline woke me up just around 8am this morning to tell me that she´d had a shower and ... read more

South America » Brazil November 13th 2005

http://www.travelblog.org/gmaps/map_oJ.html Red Earth: The Northern states of Brazil must have a poorer budget for their roads as we experienced for the first few days after Sao Luis. Mud, dirt, sand was our lot with me trying to keep my bump off the seat for most of it! (minus that bit were we actually ended with our backs on soft sand -and that was after already a 4 hours ride on dirt and bitamen roads dodging portholes and mad bus drivers-). Tired, we retraced our steps back out of the sand road/track(?), opting for the ´highway´ this time. Mind you we were warned by a couple of Tcheks motorbike riders (travelling with 2 rescued kittens) that the roads could be a bit of a challenge... Even the ´highway´is a big word for it as we still come ... read more

Oh well...what to say...just another fantastic 3 days treking round some of the most dramatic scenary on earth. This is such a tough trip !! So..after taking advice (see later..grrrrr) we decided to do the trip without tents, as we were were booked into a Refugio for the first night and were told we could hire tents for the remaining nights. We were told to take sleeping bags, as apparently the ones available at the refugio´s were not too good, so we hired some from our hostal. Since Lou's back was still hurting, Steve honerably agreed to carry most of the kit (guess who´s writing this blog !!)... Blimey...does anyone know how much space two winter sleepings bags take up...and how much they weigh...had to cut down on the grundies. Anyway...we were given duff advice. All ... read more

South America » Argentina November 13th 2005

The hostel seems to get busier every day, I keep on seeing new faces and had a nice conversation with a Brazilian girl this morning. After a bit of fuffing I made my way to the market in San Telmo. To use the underground I bought a ticket for ten journeys (or diez viajes). Unsurprisingly you also get beggars on the tube in Buenos Aires, and like in London some of them do a quick performance. The difference here is that here people at times do clap (without any sarcasm) and frequently give money. I went down Defensa street towards the market and saw a large number of artists performing. It felt like being in a Argentinian version of Leicester Square. I also saw a bit of tango near the market, but as Monica predicted it ... read more

South America » Paraguay November 13th 2005

As the TAM 701 flight I had boarded in Cochabamaba, Bolivia, descended down through the heaving, patient clouds and into the realm of Asunción, Paraguay, I got my first glimpse of this unknown, unpopular country through the small plexiglass window adjacent to my economy seat. And what did I see? The principal feature that struck me was the outrageous number of football pitches the length and breadth of the city. It was like a deck of scuffed light-green cards had been thrown flippantly onto the dark green landscape and scattered completely randomly, but everywhere, and of all ages and sizes. It was instantly apparent why they are heading to Germany next year to attend the world cup finals; even though I couldn't name one of their players. The country is football crazy. The airport was ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago November 13th 2005

Hier bin ich nun also. Of all the problems I thought we might encounter along the way, having Christie´s pedal fall off 40kms from the start was not on high on the list of probabilities. Today had started well - Christie didn´t bang her head on the roof, and didn´t say we´re not going anywhere. In fact she was out of bed, and half packed and ready to go before I had roused myself. We got the obligatory photo take outside the hostel, and to a solid farewell from George, and a bit of a yoodle from Beat we were off on our great adventure ... we went down half a block, took a right, the next left and stopped ... we´d made it to our first bakery!!! After stocking up there, we proceeded another 2 blocks to the supermarket to ... read more

South America » Peru » Ayacucho November 12th 2005

Saturday 11 November Hello all, It´s 11am Saturday morning here. Have just enjoyed a nice long lie after our farewell night out for Sile. Vicki assures me Sile made it up at 6am this morning to catch her flight - needless to say I was out for the count having said my cheerios last night. Sile was working on voluntary programmes for the last three months, although was only in Ayacucho for two weeks. She said last night that she was ready for home after that length of time. I don´t feel like that yet, but I´m sure I´ll get there. Got up this morning full of good intentions re having a shower, but the water was freezing. Think I´ll wait and try again later. Did my washing (which is now hung out on the roof) ... read more

South America » Chile » Araucanía » Villarrica November 12th 2005

I was woken this morning by Christie getting up, banging her head on the hostel roof (hard). After crawling back into bed, she turned on her side, pulled the sheets over her head and stated in a very, very unhappy tone ¨I´m not going anywhere today!¨ That, I figured, was that for day one of our great cycling expedition. I went downstairs in a bit of a huff, but my spirits were soon brightened by the general course of conversation over breakfast, and soon I had been invited along for a days ride up towards Mt Villarrica with George and the owner of the hostel, Beat (Beat and Claudia who own the hostel are an amazing couple, having cycled half way around the world from the Netherlands before settling here and opening the hostel. South America » Venezuela » Insular » Los Roques November 12th 2005

Last you heard from us we were taking a 7 hour flight from Chile up to Venezuela for a little “holiday” within our big holiday. First stop, Los Roques. An archipelago of picture postcard coral islands in the Caribbean sea off the northern coast of Venezuela. To get there you take a small plane to the main island of Gran Roque where we spent our first two nights before Bonnie and Steve arrived from London. Los Roques is hugely expensive so we booked into Dona Carmen one of the cheapest posadas on the island and signed up for a day of diving. The diving was amazing, in the morning we braved the currents off the west of Gran Roque and explored a great coral wall where the highlights were seeing an octopus and a turtle. The ... read more
