Hi Folks, Hope that you all had a good laugh at the congo photos!! The local folks certainly did!! Wendy was telling us at lunch today that the student teacher in the school she volunteers at had been up in the balcony in the square. Guess the "Gringas" are infamous now!! Was at Wawa Wasi today and had a great day, although couldn´t get any reply at the door when I arrived. Could see the kids (Anna, Rufina and Andrea) were all in the garden. Karina also arrived as I stood there for maybe 10mins. Julia finally turned up - she had gone to the shops and left the kids unsupervised. Second time this has happened in the 6 weeks I´ve worked there. She often disappears off on an errand when I´m there. Wonder what she ... read more

Had a fairly quiet night on the Tuesday, just watched Lord of the Rings and had an early night. Next day, wed, me and Andy and Steve went to the equator!! Steve got his wallet stolen out of his pocket on the bus there, which was a pain. The buses are so crammed you're right up against people, its so easy for light fingers to pickpocket you without you feeling it. We got dropped at this place where some French guy thought was the equator, they've built this huge monument and big yellow line and a complex around it, but its actually 250 metres out. We walked down the road to the real equator, to this lovely little museum. We were shown round by a guide who told us all about the indigenous culture there 700 ... read more

It rained all morning. We slept, ate breakfast, slept some more, ate lunch ... you get the picture. I discovered that blogs with photos take a bloody long time to put together (spent 6 hours in total most of which is sitting around waiting for photos to upload). The end. Forward Planning We did some rough forward planning this morning. Rough plan from here is to take a week to get to Bariloche and Puerto Montt. Another week or so from there through Chiloé to Chaiten. Two weeks to cycle the Carretera Austral to Chile Chico. Three or four weeks to bus to El Chalten then cycle to Calafate and Torres Del Paine (Christmas and new year should fall in there somewhere). Then a week or two to get down to Ushaia and back to Puerto ... read more

Hola! Crossed the border yet again, from Argentina to Chile, witha small kids vomiting every five seconds - not my best trip. Made my way to Puerto Montt, a town in many respects similar to Portland - a nice foreshore, but not really uch else. I had intended to stay there for a week but decided to keep moving after one night. Travelled from Puerto Montt (black and white photos) to Chiloe (colourful houses on stilts and boats stuck after low tide)) via ferry to visit the National Park near Cucao. Passed masses of gunnera on the beach, the last place I imagined it to grow, but there it was, no more than 50m from the shore line. Spent a few hours hiking with a full pack across hot sand and decided to call it a ... read more

What a glorious mornings ride. We set off on our bikes before 9am and then enjoyed 3 or 4 hours of demanding but wonderful cycling. There were several significant climbs uphill over the first 22kms, usually followed by a fast downhill straight back down to the lake shore giving up all the hard work we´d done, but as I´ve found in the past if you hate the downhills because of the uphills to come well you just shouldn't be cycling. Christie´s achilles and knee were really hurting her by the time we stopped for a bit of a break and we were both looking forward to a rest in San Martin. We finally made it to the plateau above the lake, and got to enjoy 10km of fast riding down a long valley, a short climb ... read more

Hi all, Wednesday today and halfway through my 6th week here. It´s really flying. Starting to feel pretty sad about saying cheerio to the Wawa Wasi ninos this Friday. I´ll really miss them lots, but know it´s time to move on. Figure I should try and experience as many projects as possible whilst here. Planning to work at the orphanage 4 days per week and go to the prison on Fridays. The women in the prison have their children locked up with them until the age of 3. CCS do a lot of work taking the kids out on Fridays for excursions, so plan to get involved in that. Forgot to mention that Pancho (the guide I was at Nasca with and who Vicki and I will be travelling with) was round at the house last ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Aguas Calientes November 16th 2005

Mon 7th Nov. Can´t begin to describe the sights from the bus on the way to Cusco, just so very different from anywhere else. Wide dirt tracks for side roads and tons of people, tck tcks, etc. A bit of a panic when Jim and others got off the bus to buy some water and it took off without them, but it did turn round eventually. No surprise when the bus broke down (Ormeño Company NOT recommended) and we arrived at Cusco at midnight. Everywhere was closed, hotel not very good so first impressions were guarded. Tues. Found a lovely hotel with 2 balconies overlooking guess whet, so we´re back on track again. Beautiful city, narrow cobbled streets, surrounded by mountains, good cheap meals and good wine at 2.50 a bottle. Recommended restaurant - Inkaria, at ... read more
