sorry one of the sisters came in and needed to use the computer so i sort of stopped mid sentence. There was a second part to that cockroach story, this time on Julie´s turf. Of course you have all heard of the lovely dog that we live with named Buddy, well he was in her room barking incessantly (as per usual) and we were trying to kick him out. However, in the process of him leaving, a cockroach scurried in! Now these things are more like creatures/animals than like insects and to kill one takes skill, might, and lots of persistance. Upon first attack, this damn cockroach found a handy hole in the wall to hide in.We tried to encourage it to come, but he knew we had ulterior motives, we just had to wait. Julie ... read more

Our second day of rest in Bariloche (Christíe´s knee is no better) and it was a day to spend some money. We´ve booked on the ¨Three Ferries¨which is a trip from Bariloche to Puerto Varas via three lakes. Christie is paying for the full works (ie. bus and boat) costing a whopping $US160 whilst I´m going to do the hard yards on land by bike saving myself ... absolutely nothing. It´s also costing me $US160. We also have to pay extra for food and accomodation. Ruddy rip off, still gotta do it plus it gives Christie three extra days of rest off her bike. I bought myself a brand new pair of bike shoes (my current pair fell to bits about 100kms ago) and a new, shorter, height adjustable stem for my handle bars as my ... read more

Iguaçu and the Journey to Salta Exiting in Brazil in a bus adorned in Argentinean flags we passed through immigration and on into the town of Puerto Iguaçu, where the driver kindly stopped so we could buy tickets for our onward journey to Salta. Being so used to the Portuguese not being able to speak Spanish I walked into the ticket office and asked, “ Abla espanol?” (Do you speak Spanish), Carl and the lady I had addressed found this astonishing and after a brief pause to digest the stupidity of my question burst out laughing. Of course she spoke Spanish, Argentina is a Spanish speaking country! Well we eventually managed to buy some tickets on a bus that left that evening to Salta, Semi Cama (Reclining with foot rests) as seats in the Cama ... read more

Day 9 We arrived in Foz about 7 am and pretty much went straight to a dam which produces 90% of Paraguay´s electricity and a fair amount of Brazil´s too. After a tour of this, we went to a helicopter site. We took a 10 minute helicopter ride over the Iguazu falls which was absolutely spectacular. The falls are on the border of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. We then walked to the falls for some more amazing views. We got really close to them and really wet! Took loads of photos!! In the evening we all went to a Latin American show/buffet where there was plenty of food, drink and fun to be had. It was a really great night which ended up very drunken in a bar!... read more

South America » Bolivia » Beni Department » Rurrenabaque November 22nd 2005

Can´t afford to fly, so I took a bus for 17 hours up to Rurrenabaue. I bused up with Flota Vaca Diez. The seat I booked, no 28, window, was broken. It would not lock into place in any posistion, and would recline at every bump. Normally a broken seat is a bad thing, except on this trip it acted like a secondary shock absorber, and was just the ticket when bussing the worlds most dangerous road, which leads through to the world´s most bumpy road. As a note, the worlds most dangerous road isn´t all that dangerous really. Sure, it´s mostly single lane, cut into a cliff, dirt road, but any drunck wouldn´t make it up the first K before driving off the side, so you can be sure most drivers are sober (if not ... read more

South America » Bolivia November 22nd 2005

After walking the Inca Trail to Machu Piccu in Peru we flew from Cusco south to La Paz in Bolivia - almost the highest capital city in the world..almost in as much as it isn´t a capital city, but hey it is pretty high at 4200m! Sucre is capital of Bolivia for those of you who are interested...what nobody? La Paz is a pretty bazarre place spilling up out of a canyon and onto the altiplano (high altitude plateau). Its very cheap. In the markets you can get some real bargains..cheap guitars and pan pipes, cheap silver things (so I am now adorned in the finest Bolvian jewelry looking rather like a cheap South American Jimmy Saville!) and also llama foetuses. I am not sure how I have got by until now without a well stocked ... read more

Ok, so we’re back in Bolivia. We’re in Uyuni this time, which has pizza, pool tables, but NOT atms. Here’s how we got here: We left La Paz for Iquique, but didn’t get such a good deal on the bus trip. Also it turned out that the bus wasn’t going to Iquique, but to Arica. We were fairly surprised by this when we got to Arica and were told to wait and hour and get on a different bus. So we waited and no bus came. Turns out the bus we had tickets for had flat tires or something and we were all transferred to another company. So, despite setting out at 6am, we didn’t get to Iquique until about 10pm. It was too dark to look for a hostel, but luckily we had made friends ... read more

thanks for the great responses from everyone. vivian is taking a shower upstairs and i am in recovery from too much wine and a great meal last night. we took a city bus yesterday from this area recoleta to plaza italia (10c). it was noisy, smoggy and fun. we walked through palermo viejo an area with great old neighborhoods. stopped a a beautiful cafe on paraguay st. called montecarlo. nice people. the owner is a young man 20something, very amiable. he had just lost his dad who left him the cafe. we walked more and found a tiny gourmet shop of wines, cheeses (using the internet for sales). the prop. was pablo jones, an entrepreneur who will be on the flight to mendoza with us on sat. he plans to buy land for a vineyard on ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro November 22nd 2005

Ahh...at last, another iconic moment in the trip...(and another misuse of íconic´)..but still a significant milestone in the journey...to get to the most famous and exotic of Brasil´s places..Rio de Janeiro...and just for starters..its not a bloody river at all..the turkey who first landed..way, way back, thought it was and so named it..the next bozo that came along didn´t have the nouse or the courtesy to re-name it...like Porto de Janeiro, no, he wants the first bugger to have wear the ignomy for all time...anyway... Into the most beautiful city in the world, they say.....across the longest bridge in the world maybe..thinking I was back in the Florida keys...on and on, in the distance, the beautiful layout, the buildings, the mountains, the rock features, the fabulous beaches, the city skyline, the cable cars, and the Big ... read more

Monday 21 November Hello all, Today was my first day at the orphanage. Vicki wasn´t feeling great today, so I went on my own. Was working with the babies in the nursery. Marisol (one of the CCS staff) took me along and introduced me to the head nun. The orphanage is run by the RC church and also supported by the government. The sister asked if I could work a full day on Tuesdays as there is only one person in the nursery in the afternoon. I said that this was no problem. When I arrived, the babies were being washed and changed out of their pyjamas into their day clothes. There are 11 kids in the nursery in total. The youngest is 3 months old and the eldest maybe a year. After they were changed, ... read more
