Hi Folks, Just me again with my daily updates!! Thanks for the comments and the messages - much appreciated!! Mum - so proud that you´ve mastered e-mail and the blog. Told you that you could if you really wanted to!! Was at WW as usual this morning. First thing I noticed was that the majority of the kids still had their heights and weights written on their arms after yesterday. Apart from that there were no other obvious signs that they had been affected by the experience!! Had taken chalk with me today, and we played hopscotch again. Have attched some photos of Ernesto and Andrea playing. They were the only two (the two eldest) who mastered the hopping technique. They really enjoyed it. After that we became creative!! The exterior of Julia´s house is white ... read more

So I got up at a ridiculously early time, 4.30am, and got a taxi to the airport. Was a bit stressed about catching the connection in Lima, as I only had less than an hour to do so. The trip, however, turned out to be the easiest flight ive ever caught, full marks to Taca International Airlines! I only waited for about 15 mins in Peru (cant really say ive been to Peru, never got a stamp and didnt set foot on Peruvian soil) The flight to Quito was short and chatted to some middle aged men next to me who couldnt quite believe I didnt even know where i was staying when i got off the plane. They kept on saying 'valiente'. So many people have said im brave im half starting to believe it! ... read more

After a relaxing day in Queenstown with only a walk up to the top of the cable car overlooking Queenstown to note, we went for our much discussed ´farewell meal´ (as the following day Jules and Becca headed for North Island and us for Chile) at Finz. A delicious meal washed down with a couple of bottles of Marlborough wine seemed a fitting way to end a fantastic month on south island. Jules failed to identify the lychee flavour that he has talked about frequently since our day of tasting!! The following morning we said our farewells and headed for Queenstown airport for the potentially the worst flying leg of our journey - four flights spanning nearly 24hours but arriving in early afternoon of the same day having crossed the international date line. We were very ... read more

We were woken this morning by rain. Yay. We were pretty much confined to our tent (being fair weather cyclists and all) until 9am and hence didn´t get on the road until about 11am. Still got some efficiencies to gain in the packing department. The first 5.5kms were perfect cycling country with ever changing views as we rode close to the lakes edge and then climbed fairly steeply up over a small pass and into the next valley. Because the roads are so narrow and slippery we had to stop for every truck, bus and car that came past ... it soon became fairly annoying, but you got into the rhythm of it. If you don´t laugh, you´ll only cry. We stopped for lunch about 13kms down the road (what progress I hear you say). We ... read more

This morning I was very tired (The Brazilian guys decided to have a party on the roof yesterday after the bars, and I couldn´t help joining in). I had to get up early ( well at around 10.30 ) for my Spanish lesson, and Monica wasn´t too happy with my performance. I had lunch at a Pizza place near the hostel, and the waiter seemed reluctant to give me the correct change when I paid (he only handed me the remaining five pesos when I gave him a dirty look). I think today I may have appeared particularly vulnerable. I started planning my trip around Argentina in the afternoon. According to everyone I spoken to I should book transport and accommodation in advance, as between the end of December and the end of February, everyone in ... read more

Crossing into Chile from Bolivia, we only had four days left in South America, so we immediately caught a bus from the border town of San Pedro de Atacama to Calama. We stayed one night here, but unfortunately due to time constraints, we couldn't visit the Copper mine to the north, the largest open mine in the world. Instead we then caught another bus to Antofogasta for our flight to Santiago. Northern Chile will have to wait for another trip....(and the south!) In Santiago, we visited San Cristobal hill for panoramic views of the city. The city zoo was also on this hill and went in for a look , although not perhaps the best place to see polar bears! At the top we took a cable car to a wine museum, where we had a ... read more

Day 1 We arrived in Rio in the morning after a 13 hour journey, somehow ended up in a taxi that took us to our hotel. Then we crashed out for a couple of hours. We woke up in the early afternoon and went for a wander round Flemengo and along the beach. Later we went for some dinner, where we started to reallise just how foreign we are. Usually in europe you can muddle you way through and I thought I a basic understanding of Portugese, but appartently not. Watching Carly trying to get her way through a family size Chicken Lasagne was funny though! By the time we were finished it was dark and walking back to the hotel was interesting, there were these people trying to sell stuff on the streets that they ... read more

Hola amigos!! Back to Wawa Wasi today. Went with 6 empty pringles cans, 2 empty vitamins bottles and a packet of macaroni!! We had a full compliment again today, and still have the chute. Julia and I spent the first hour covering the pringles tubs in the soft foamy fabric that I used for our sea frieze. We cut out enough to cover the tubs and stuck them on with Pritt stick. The plan was to paint them using the paints I´d bought a few weeks ago, and fill the tubs with the macaroni, so they have shakers. I plan to see if I can get them to keep rhythm to some of the kiddies tapes Julia has for them at WW. We had the milk (leche) early this morning, as Julia was keen to vamos. ... read more

I made my way to Latacunga, a rather gloomy town three hours south of Quito. There was absolutely nothing to do there, so I stayed in and watched Mexican Telenovelas. I woke up early the next morning eager to leave before I became extremely depressed. Latacunga just wasn´t going to be the great start to my epic adventure. I hopped on a bus and headed for the Black Sheep Inn, an ecolodge that recently won the Smithsonian Best Ecotourism Site, or at least they told me that. On the way I stopped in Saquisili to check out a famous indigenas market; most of the venders were selling bananas, fried food, or some kind of indigenas crafts. To be honest though, I´ve never been a big fan of markets. I think Dajabon killed any curiousity I once ... read more
