The main thing the tourists do here in Arequipa is go to Colca caynon to see the Condors - so I went to Cotahasi. Cotahuasi is the deepest caynon in the world, and bigger than the Grand Caynon in the States. It is about 12 hours in a bus, twice the distance to Colca caynon, and for that reason a whole lot less visited. And after blowing my spare change on climbing Misti, I decieded a few days free camping was in order. I didn´t really know where I was going, I just thought I would follow the river down through the caynon, and if I couldn´t find any easy way out after a few days I would simply turn around and hike back out. I arrived in Cotahuasi at about 2am and slept in the ... read more

Today was our Laguna day. Laguna Grande is a large lake that feeds into the Cuyabeno River, located about 25-30 minutes upstream from our lodge. Walter, our trusty canoe driver, took us out to the laguna, and drove us around while Diego explained the laguna -- its wildlife and its seasons (dry and wet). At one point someone saw a freshwater dolphin, so we cruised around the laguna, hoping to catch another glimpse of it (or them). I did hear one come up for air, but it was behind the canoe so I never saw it. Unfortunately this part of the day -- cruising around the laguna -- was not quite as enjoyable for me as it could have been. When we left for our canoe ride yesterday the skies were threatening rain so none of ... read more

I arrived in Buenos Aires at around 10.30 am. Getting through customs was easy, the official seemed only concerned about where to put the entry stamp in my passport(I did not need the flight out of Argentina after all). Hostel Firulete kindly arranged for a cab to pick me up, and a friendly looking old man was waiting for me at the exit. Perhaps I said ´Buenos Dias´ too convincingly as he happily started talking to me in Spanish, and looked a bit disappointed when he realised I didn't understand him. It was a nice sunny day, around 20 degrees, but it felt a lot warmer in the car. Some of the roads to Buenos Aires are incredibly wide, and people drive like crazy(I thought Poland was bad). There's also a lot of old American cars ... read more

Rio de Janeiro... What can you say? Crazy place, favelas everywhere. some are on the waters edge, some go all the way up the mountainside! I still really want to go into one, but I really don´t think it would be the safest idea, so we headed for the beach instead. After asking several people where we could find a cheap hotel, a couple suggested we try this really good, but cheap one in the Lapa area. We found the hotel, it seemed okay from the outside so we booked one night and paid! Only once inside did we realise it was a dodgy motel, dark red coridoors, pictures of naked women, mirrors on the ceiling! Oh, well a bed´s a bed! That couple must have thought me and Elizangela (Andersons Wife) were sneaking away for ... read more

Misti was a bit of a challenge, but but I knocked her off. The last 3 hours of walking was a bit of a strugle, when I suddenly developed a bit a stomach ache. Every few minutes I felt like I wanted to shoot something out from one end or the other, but could not work out which. So it was plod, plod, plod... stop, wait while my stomach calmed itself down....plod, plod, plod. I have never walked so slow in my life, but I made it to the top and forced a smile. Misti is a 5829 meter volcano at the back of Arequipa. It´s fairly high, and we started out at 3200 meters and climbed up to the camp at 4700 meters the first day. I have passed the last 6 weeks without droping much ... read more

Hello all!! Following on from yesterday, when I was rudely awakened at 2.30am and failed miserably in getting back to sleep, I was extremely grumpy this morning and almost ready to commit murder when the alarm went off!! Anyway - headed off to Wawa Wasi. Andrea was back today, back to full fitness and twice as boisterous!! Photo attached as evidence!! In the morning we played a little with the toys. I had gone equipped with some cardboard and sponges all prepared for some sponge painting. Had a fuller group today. Rufina and Karina were back and also Andrea. We were back to a full compliment of 8 kids again!! No news of the little girl in Marruja and Eileen´s WW - I understand she is in quarantine for 2 weeks at home. Please continue to ... read more

Wed 2nd. The flights over the Andes to Santiago en route to Lima were spectacular, and just about made up for the 1 1/2 hour debacle at Lima immigration. We thought the hotel pick-up taxi would have gone, but unfortunately it was still there. If you ever saw the Addams´ Family on TV - well it was filmed in this hotel! To top it all, we had things stolen from our backpacks - so Lima is our first disaster. Next day we caught the bus to Pisco, which was a very pleasant 4 hour journey. We thn went to find a hotel accompanied by half a dozen tourist reps, touting for business. They led us through the town centre where a jazz band was playing - but it wasn´t a welcome party. A coffin was being ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia November 9th 2005

"How civilized air travel is", one of us recently quipped. It's difficult to share that sentiment when it means getting up at stupid o´clock (3am) to catch a 3 hour flight. Well that´s exactly what we did and as a result of such actions we are delighted to now be in Ushuaia - the southernmost city on Earth and self proclaimed "End of the World, beginning of everything". Situated on the shores of the Beagle Channel, Ushuaia is a former penal colony that has boomed into a thriving little tourist town. Upon arrival we booked ourselves on a 6 hour boat trip out into the channel so see cormorants, sea lions and pengiuns. Unfortunately for us, we had inadvertantly booked ourselves on a ´luxury´ trip, and in doing so we discovered that we were the only ... read more

Cuenca was my first destination in Ecuador and it was a nice little colonial city, though most of my time in Cuenca was not spent wandering the cobbled streets, admiring the architecture or visiting the local cathedral, it was spent zoned-out in front of the cable TV that was in my hotel room. After a three day fix of MTV, I left Cuenca for Alausi. I woke up really early after my only night in this thriving metropolis and headed to the train station to ride the rails along the 'Nariz del Diablo' (Devil's Nose). I'm still a bit baffled as to what exactly the 'Nariz del Diablo' was, but it's fair to say that I've either been there or done that. The train ride was fun because the way to travel on this train was ... read more

South America » Argentina » Misiones » Puerto Iguazú November 8th 2005

I´m sitting in an internet cafe on Avenida Tres Fronteras, so called since it leads down towards the confluence of two rivers that mark the borders between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. We´re here to see the amazing Iguazu waterfalls. Maybe it´s just my geographical ignorance but I have to admit that before planning my trip to Argentina, I´d never heard of them. The truth is that they are absolutely breathtaking and I would highly recommend them to anyone. Alison´s visited Angel Falls in Venezuela (tallest in South America or world?) and she found Iguazu more impressive. I guess you´ll see the sheer size of them from the photos... We saw them from both the Argentinian and Brazilian sides, which meant that we hopped over to Brazil just for the day. Excellent! Was fun trying to guess ... read more
