South America » Brazil » Mato Grosso do Sul » Bonito February 17th 2006

Ok, so it's been a week since we left Bonito but this is the first chance we´ve had to write about it (see next entry). Spent a couple of beautiful hot days here, a bike ride to an artificial beach, which included volleyball courts in and out of the water, a "Flying Fox" hang-slide into the lake, a trampoline, and huge fish surrounding you as you wade through the shallow end! The next day was spent snorkelling, unfortunately we have no photos other than us in our wetsuits (very flattering!), but it was amazing. The waters were absolutely crystal clear, and in fact we weren´t allowed to touch the bottom as disturbing the limestone would dirty the water. The fish were beautiful, colourful, and unperturbed by us floating silently above them watching their every move. One ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia February 17th 2006

There were no roses or candy this Valentine´s day. Griff and I woke up in the morning, walked across the room to the other from our tiny twin beds, wished each other a Happy Valentine´s Day, and headed to the bus station for our seven hour bus ride to Punta Arenas. The trip was only a portion of our voyage to the end of the earth, Ushuaia, which is on the southern tip of South America. It is one heck of a journey, requiring us to head inland from Argentina, cross the border into Chile, hop another bus from Chile back into Argentina, and drive another twelve hours with a transfer between one junky buss to another. (Each buss gets squishier and older the farther you go.) Most of the twelve hour ride is over gravel ... read more

South America » Brazil » Paraná » Foz do Iguaçu February 17th 2006

It was a long drive once again from Asuncion, to cross the border and on to Brazil. It was very hot and stuffy on our bus too. But the time soon passed. The border was manic, many people cross from Brazil to buy duty free goods on the Paraguay side of the border. It was then a short drive in to the town of Foz, home of the amazing Iguassu Falls. We pitched up our tents at the campsite which has a pool, cooked dinner and had a swim, and celebrated a birthday of a girl on our trip. There are also other travellers at our site, this is getting more common now as everybody in this region is heading for Rio for Carnaval next week. Thursday morning we left the camp at 8am, and crossed ... read more

DANKE !!!!! MUCHAS GRACIAS !!!!!!! Nochmals besos & alles Liebe Eure Silke ... read more

endlich mal Platz

Hier aber vorerst mal Fotos ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz February 17th 2006

It´s been a while. Geez, we don´t really talk any more (are we still cool?) On Monday I left Macchu Picchu... I got into Cuzco in the evening, ate nachos (Jack´s Cafe in Cuzco is the best restaurant, straight up, don´t let the guys in Procudores convince you that 10 soles is a good meal.) and headed to the bus station. I took an overnight bus to Puno, with a group of Chileans. They convinced me to continue on to Copacabana, Bolivia. I am infatuated with being in two places at once, so I took all of these photos of me in Bolivia and Peru, it was AWESOME. When we got to Copacabana, we figured we´d go directly to the Isla del Sol. It´s about an hour and a half from Copacabana. We bought a case ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago February 17th 2006

OK, yesterday I managed to find 2 things that I like about Santiago!! The first is a cultural phenomenon that I guess was bred out of the fact that (I believe) divorce only became legal here within the last year or so. A Cafe con piernas (coffee with legs) is a place where I guy will go during his lunch break, or after a hard days work for a quick coffee before heading home. There´s nowhere to sit, you just stand at the counter and drink your coffee. Hence ´with legs´. Oh, and the waitresses are wearing the tiniest little bikinis ever. And because it was an important cultural experience we had all the girls who work at the school (including the director) telling us which they´d heard were best to go to and printing us ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Salar de Uyuni February 16th 2006

This place is truly extraordinary. It´s just one massive salt lake, the biggest in the world and it can withstand the weight of a jeep, laden down with 8 people and their stuff for a 6 day tour. Crazy! Driving along the miles and miles of perfectly flat, white, expanse of lake you have to remember to close your jaw in order to swallow the huge gulps of amazement your senses are taking in. The otherworldly beauty of this place continues into the glacial lakes whose waters are stained bright red or emerald green by micro organisms or mineral deposits. Just go and experience it yourself. My words cannot do it justice. Check out the pics.... read more

I know I've been slippin on updating this thing, but honestly I've been really busy!! What I thought was busy in Richmond is nothing compared to here (except of course during exams). I get up early and go all day. It's great, but I'm not accustomed to it at all so it is taking some time to adjust. I guess it's been a week since my last entry so I have a lot to update on. (That's my punishment for putting it off so long). Class has been pretty typical, all in Spanish and lots of workbook exercises. I don't feel like I'm learning much though. It is difficult to understand a foreign concept in a foreign language. Not only do you have to struggle with understanding the grammar rules she's explaining, but you have to ... read more
