Three hours from Copacabana, on the other side of Lake Titicaca is Puno. Everybody who comes here makes a visit to the floating islands of Uros on Lake Titicaca. The islands are made of totora reeds, which grows abundandly in the shallow parts of the Lake Titicaca. The reed seems to be quite a versatile plant. The people living on the islands use it for pretty much everything: they use it for the islands, they eat it, they burn it, and they build houses and boats and all sorts of things of it. We took a one day boat cruise on Lake Titicaca visiting the floating islands and Isla Taquile. Visiting the floating islands was an interesting experience but Isla Taquile was less impressive. After seeing Isla del Sol, Isla Taquile was just another island on ... read more

Feb 14 After pulling my back out and riding all those miserable hours on the plane, I feel much better today. We finally left the Lima airport about 1 AM and pushed our way through hordes of taxi drivers, and crowds of people to the taxi area, where my companion negotiated at length with several drivers to get a fare he thought was reasonable-about $7…which I didn’t think was so cheap!! This is how you drive in Lima- ignore all traffic lights and signs, and go as fast as you can, laying on the horn the whole time, hoping the other person stops. Luis, the fellow that met me, said, “Don’t worry, that’s how everybody drives here.” I am glad I don’t intend to drive! I was left at a sort of bare bones hotel-the sheets ... read more

Arrived in Sao Luis Monday (I think at least). Sao Luis really reminds me of France and Montpellier - no wonder since it was founded by the Frenchies. I have had time to explore the hostorical center and I have met a very nice girl, Patricia from Brazil, that I went to les Lencois Maranheses with. That is a national park with huge sanddunes. When it rains the water gets filtered and makes blue lagoons everywhere. This is of course not the good period to come, but we got to take a swim in one of the lagoons and do some sand-surfing on the dunes. Very nice. I also got my first sun-burn - less nice. Since Sao Luis is the capital of reggae in Brazil, we decided (we being Patricia, me and two French guys ... read more

Hello chaps, i have decided that i need to start a new blog entry before i forget what i have been doing for the last month. Life on the road has been really busy and i keep finding out about cool new things to do. I last left you having finished the torres del paine circuit and having a big night out to celebrate. The next day i headed off to punta arenas which the best thing i can say about is it was better than puerto natales. It is right at the southern end of chile, and the towns down here on the chilean side are all a bleak collection of houses with tin roofs. Punta arenas however was once a quite rich city as it controlled the passage around cape horn. Therefore it has ... read more

On the return journey from Iruya and on our way to Purmamarca, we passed by what is known as "The Painter's Palette". We could only take a semi-decent picture of this, not easy from a moving vehicle, but the bus didn't stop here. We stayed just the one night in Purmamarca to see "The Mountain of 7 Colours" in the morning, a unique rock formation where many different layers have been exposed by the forces of nature. This colourful mountain really is stunning to see, one can't stop looking at it and taking pictures, it looks almost impossible that nature could have created it so beautiful and harmonious. The stopover in Purmamarca also helped to break up a long bumpy road journey from Iruya to Salta, where we headed to next. The main reason why we ... read more

Three weeks three countries... No I'm not just collecting Stamps in my passport I really heard its worth going to Uruguay. Colonia What is there to say about Colonia. It was founded 1680 by the Portuguese to piss of the Spanish which just founded Buenos Aires and to smuggle stuff into BA. It is named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site; it is really cute and has lot of old building and cobble stone streets. Have a look at the pics and you know what I mean. Montevideo Before you ask no I didn’t mention that I live in Australia while I'm in Montevideo. Somehow that didn’t seem to be a wise thing to do. (For the non Australians. South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro February 17th 2006

The start of my trip was really left footed. Why was it left footed, you ask? Well, for starters we had a really great flight: Our plane from Tel Aviv to Madrid was late by an hour, so we had 15 minutes to catch our connection to Rio De Janeiro. When we came running to the terminal, we discovered that our plane to Rio was going to be late by another one and a half hours. Then when we finally had landed in Rio, we went to take our baggage, but of course, it hadn't arrived. Apparently the Iberia people has decided that it ought to rest some time in Tel Aviv... There was a really long line to declare our lost baggage in the airport, as they lost the baggage of half of the airplane ... read more

Friday is a day of exploration. Holden and Julia are off to locate the Brazilian Consulate to start the process to obtain visas. Herv and Karla are off to explore San Telmo - the Tango neighborhood. It is basically just around the corner from the hotel, but we have to cruise by the Casa Rosada and along one of the main streets just to soak up more of the BA feeling. San Telmo is packed with antique stores and crafts vendors. There is evidence of a renaissance, as some of the older buildings are being renovated and lots of sold signs are apparent. The local vendors have a wide variety of beautiful produce - watermelons 30" long and ears of corn nearly a foot long - that make your mouth water. Since we walk almost everywhere ... read more
