We arrived at Curitiba at 6.45 am after a comfortable journey on the Leito. We had a coffee/tea in the bus station cafe to re-energise ourselves then headed off to the train station to get the tourist train to Paranagua. The journey was advertised as a scenic, romantic journey through the mountainous atlantic rainforest of the South-East of Brazil. What they don´t advertise is the fact that it only runs once a day at a time when civilised people are re-energising themselves over coffee/tea in the bus station. Nor do they advertise that the train is only a tourist train on weekends so is not the luxurious air-conditioned train either, nor does it run all the way to Parangua, it now only went to the stop before, Morretes. Flexible as we are we decided the best ... read more

After doing 2 days of kayaking in Bariloche...yeah I finaly control the eskimoroll now. I relaxed a bit in the city in the mountains....before I started to make my way back to Chili....Guess I was lucky with my ride, the car that stopped had to go to the same place as I wanted to go...so 4 hours later and 2 times the paperwork at the boarder I was back in Chili. there I found out that Hitchhiking even works with two guys (and two great backpacks). I met an American Guy there when freecamping at the lake side, and together we went to a Nat. Park to hike a couple days along vulcano Osorno and some beautiful lakes and mountains. days later I made my way to Chiloe, an Island a bit smaller than holland do ... read more

so kyle and i have been working for a week now at santa martha and it has been amazing! there are a lot of monkeys, a coati, jaguar, 7 lions (three of which live in the backyard), foxes, lots and lots of birds like macaws and parrots, and so many more. we have had the chance to work with them, feed them, play and clean them. kyle´s favorite is the andean spectacled bears and my favorites are the scarlett macaws and the monkeys. it is all very exciting but one day i almost passed out because we were feeding dead chickens to the hawks, eagles, and the big cats. the smell was so horrible and just seeing all of the dead parts everywhere it was a little overwhelming. i got over it though and i cleaned ... read more

Southern Patagonia may well have been the perfect place for us… coupled with the beautiful scenery of endless lakes, tiny islands and snow-capped mountains we really were in penguin heaven. We couldn’t turn a corner without catching sight of more penguin paraphernalia - they even used giant cuddly penguins as mannequins in shop windows! But alas, we had to participate in some non-animal related things too (honestly we’re not hiding out in London zoo!) Patagonia is trekkers' heaven so we thought we'd better give it a go too, our first taste was in the Tierra del Fuego National Park (in Argentina), which, naturally, is abundant with lakes, islands and mountains. Our walk was round one of the lakes, through woods and past some fantastic scenery. Our plan was to reach the beaver colony (they have beavers ... read more

It was finally a normal weekend, no extravagant craziness. I know you're disappointed, but living a vacation life for so long sometimes gets old. Yes, I'm feeling alright. Thursday, after I enjoyed a lonely happy hour of two beers for 6 pesos while waiting for some friends, a group of seven of us went to see 'Derailed', the "new" movie with Jenifer Aniston and Clive Owen. There is a cinema in Recoleta Village a few blocks from school, and it's super classy. It has four levels, and it's really like a shopping center. We found this out afterward, but it's the most expensive cinema in Argentina. At 14 pesos, what a ripoff! And for the first time in my life, I had assigned seats in the theater. The lady showed us a seating chart and we ... read more

Hola, Wow what a fantastic....while. I think the last time I wrote was in Cuenca, so I will pick it up from there. From Cuenca Tessa and I booted it to Guyaquil, Ecuador's largest and most "feo" (ugly) city. A port city, Guyaquil really didn't have much to look at except concrete and black-smoke, not to mention the polluted brownish-green water. However, always one to try to make the best of any situation, Tessa and I took a nice walk along the reconstructed waterfront, which did have some fun things to take a look at. Stopping for dinner, it started to pour rain and, shoeless and in normal clothes, Tessa and I rain around a pedestrian area with some local kids (who were happily and comfortably wearing garbage bags to help, somewhat hopelessly, with the pouring ... read more

Cleaning up our apartment we found an excellent trails guide for the Floripa island. Trails were ranking from easy, semi-difficult, difficult, hard, radical. As we are both well trained ;-) we choose a semi-difficult path in the south of the island (Pântano do sul). We thought it would be a good start. After 2 hours, 3 buses and a ride (we got off the bus to early because I blindly trusted the surfers as indication for a walking trail. Don't ask me why!) we finally arrived in a small fisher village and started our trip. In theory we should reach our target 45 minutes later: a desert beach on the opposite coast line. The trip turned out to be a little longer and harder than expected: the path was full of stones, mud and water. Trees ... read more

So, what have we been up to since our last blog? Stayed in a place called Florianopolic - on the isla de Santa Catarina. Rented a quality apartment for the same price as a hostel which was pretty cool. Florianopolis was lovely... however we had one or two encounters - one of which i´ll leave til we get home!! Considering its such a touristy place we were surprised that so few people spoke English but figured we´re all pretty streetwise so ventured out on our own to a beach a bit further away. Well our sense of direction is obviously shot to sh*t as we plodded around in the boiling hot sun unable to find any water! So we ventured home - another mission - to our beach at praia de ingleses. The next day we ... read more

English For the second time we crossed the border Argentina-Chile. This time the experience was much more positive, we did not had the same sad feeling of touristic exploitation that we tasted in Torres del Paine. Coming from Argentina we had to switch our brain to the chilean accent with 'ja, ja' again... Ok, we were quite trained this time, but we have to say that even if the language is the same, coming from one country to another in South America one has really to make an effort to grasp the differences in the accent. It takes quite a while to learn the typical essential words that can be very different from country to country. This can cost you some misunderstandings... At our arrival at Puerto Montt at lunch time we were terribly hungry. Since ... read more

As we (especially Ran, my flight partner) wanted to 'lizrom' and make as little plans as possible, we did a reservation only for the first night. What we didn´t know, was that on the following day there was going to be a free concert by the Rolling Stones in Rio, so all the hostels / hotels / pausads were overbooked. After some time we finally managed to find a really lousy apartment, and the owner made us pay for 2 nights. We rented it with a couple of israeli girls, and Tom from England, who has been traveling for 2 years. The best thing that I can tell about the appartmnet is the interesting stories Tom has told me. At evening we tried our luck and went to the concert. Besides us, 1.2 million people also ... read more
