Having joined forces with Holden and Julia, we are off to the wine country of Argentina. We have been tasting the wines with every meal and find the Malbecs very good. They may be competing with the full-bodied cabernets of the US. We will be staying at the Nuevo Hotel San Francisco in the Coria neighborhood of Mendoza.... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires February 13th 2006

La Casa ... read more

South America » Brazil » Pantanal February 13th 2006

... with the Pantanal in Brazil!!!!! The world´s largest wetland (150,000 km², extending to Paraguay and Bolivia, fed by the River Paraguay, with AMAZING wildlife!!) I didn´t want to leave!! The Mexican I met on the bus from Argentina and I, after being surrounded by many different tour companies offering very similar deals, decided to go with GreenTrack - see their great website www.greentrack.com.br (our tour guide, Murilo, is on the top right!!!!) - as it seemed less touristy than others and Murilo, our guide, with 18 yrs experience, offered to drive us there (normally you must take the bus) with his gorgeous little daughter, Maria (I need to speak Portuese!!!)... So we slept in hammocks (my first time! I loved it!) under roofs made from palm trees and protected by mosquito nets (ahhhhh the mosquitos!!!)... ... read more

South America » Brazil » Minas Gerais » Belo Horizonte February 13th 2006

A 6h+23h bus ride later - a mixture of waking and sleeping and feeling ill going to the putrid bus toilets (don´t worry, it stopped frequently) - and the woman beside me woke me from a violent dream to tell me we had arrived at Belo Horizonte, third largest city in Brazil. Marina came to meet me at the bus stop (she found me after much looking!) with her friend in his car. Back to her appartment she shares with her sister/s (and their boyfriends sometimes!) and brother. They are all ADORABLE, very welcoming, and great to teach me a little Portuguese (Ah, I have to learn now!!)... It´s so difficult to speak (not so much to understand) because it is so similar to Spanish... Ah, but I have a few more weeks here to practice! ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Ríos » Valdivia February 13th 2006

After my last entry, I asked again at the ticket counter if there were tickets to Valdivia open yet, in case of a cancellation. He said no, so I aksed if there were any tickets to Valdivia from Lanco, the town we were headed. He said yes, so we got one for 8pm, about an hour after we would be arriving in Lanco. This was sheer genius on my part as Lanco turned out to be a hole. I have no idea where we would have slept or even gotten tickets to Valdivia if we didn´t already have them. We arrived in Valdivia just in time to catch a beautiful pink sunset as we walked around looking for a home. We tried one from our book and it was full, but the woman walked us down ... read more

South America » Ecuador February 13th 2006

Executive Summary I took a couple extra weeks and stayed around Canoa to learn paragliding. I survived and loved learning to fly. My instructor was one of several gringoes I've met who have 'got stuck' down here. I often feel a mix of happy and guilty when it comes to being a wealthy tourist in an impoverished land. Finally, and not to be missed, a recipe for local dish "bolon de verde". Meeting the "Locals" There's a Hotel California effect down here, subtly tugging at many travelers' heart and purse strings. In Canoa I met quite a few Europeans and North Americans who fell in love with the ocean, often a local Ecuadorian too to seal the deal. There's Calvin, from Winnipeg, who if you ask how long he's been on the road he'll say "Oh, ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Puerto Natales February 13th 2006

Here I am in Chile and it is raining. Except this detail, it is just great! I started the weekend in a bus for going from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas and consequently leaving Argentina (I'll be back!) for Chile. Saterday in a bus means no rugby, which is obviously better for the French team! Punta Arenas! There is nothing to say about this town except that it is on the Magellan straight and there is othing and nobody there...ok it was over the weekend (even the city museum is closed on Sunday) but there was a nice little market on the main square where I bought a hand knitted "bonnet" that still smell the sheep from where the wool is coming from. There is a paper here that had a title: What is beautiful is alive ... read more

South America » Brazil » Pará » Belém February 13th 2006

I spent this WE on Ilha de Marajo, where the buffalos are wild and stroll around the streets. It is a very primitive island with few cars but many bikes. On the somewhat scary trip to the island (there were big waves, not a very stable boat, people were screaming, bags were flying everywhere and I think that the life wests were hanging there more for decoration than for other purposes :o) I met a bunch of crazy Frenchies that I ended up sharing room with. I had my first warm shower (or should I say boiling since it was either icecold or boiling, hihi) since I came to Brazil. Very nice. We had some nice buffalo meet and then explored the only disco in town. After having tried three times, the bouncer lady finally decided ... read more

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador February 13th 2006

Well unfortunately we were not able to get a cheap flight from Campo Grande to Salvador, and instead opted for 50 hours of buses. The first two, although long, went relatively well, especially since the one from Campo Grande to Brasilia I had no one sitting beside me. The last bus ride, however, from Brasilia to Salvador, was 24 hours of crap. Neither Jord nor I could manage to sleep between the crying babies, the psycho lady that I was sitting beside, and teh bus driver driving through corn fields. For the price of the rides you would think there would be a movie, but alas there was not even that to keep me occupied. I have now read 4 chapters of Harry Potter, and for the most part I understand what the hell is going ... read more

South America » Argentina » Córdoba February 13th 2006

Well looks like if you want to get out of town you need to do it yourself even if you do it wrong. I finally got in touch with Venesa and I headed off to San Luis for the weekend. I made the decision on Thurday night and headed out on Friday night. It seems that all of the busses leave at O dark thirty in the morning or late at night and arrive at some un godly hour in the morning. Mine left at 10:10 and got in at 5AM. you know how much I love the mornings. At any rate, the buses are pretty first class here. There have two levels and look like planes of sorts. Some have full beds on the bottom of the bus and Semi camas on the top. (Large ... read more
