That´s right, there was no tanning. Today we went sunburning (in the words of Kim). Even though, we used SPF 15 we look like tomatoes (this is Cari speaking, mind you. Cari is merely a light pink rose petal compared to the fire engine i am). We spent the day with Miriam in Punta del Este shopping and at the beach. It was pretty but there were too many people. Hopefully tomorrow we will find some secluded beaches up the coast-not that it matters because we don´t need anymore sun.... read more

We stayed with Miriam (Cari´s cousin) at the orphanage where she is working. The kids were fun to play with us! It was good to have time to relax and wash our clothes. We explored the city for awhile but there is not much to do in the city.... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires February 12th 2006

Unfortunately the best times come to an end and I had to leave Easter Island but hey who cares if your next destination is Buenos Aires. Many who have been there hyped BA and I have to say there were completely correct. This place rocks! If you ever look for a place in South America that is not too different from back home but is still interesting then this is the place to be. Lets start from the beginning. I managed to get a shuttle bus to my hostel after arriving at 2am in the night! Unfortunately the hostel I booked was pretty loud and full of Israelis. Please don't get me wrong I like them if they travel alone but if they are in a group they are a pain in the butt. So on ... read more

So what do you do when the entire island you´re staying on has a power cut?? 3 steps to island darkness: 1) Light rain 2) Torrential downpour 3) Lights out, air conditioning off and no TV! Apparently it happens quite often, so some of the restaurants have their own generators, the rest just take the night off! The next day, we scourd the town looking for lunch. Apparently the only food on the island that doesn´t need electricity is burgers! Fresh fruit juices and sandwiches are a no-go! The next 20 hours were spent travelling by boat, van, bus and taxi to Curitiba. There´s not much here except a cheap internet cafe in the shopping centre, but the best thing it has to offer is the break in an otherwise 30 hour journey to Iguassu Falls. ... read more

Hola everybody. I am good here. There are a lot more people at the station now. Among them a couple from Canada has come to shoot a documentary. This is their first time making a movie, and I think it’s going to be really neat. They are always aiming their cameras at some interesting insect or plant or bird. I have two items of good news. The first is that the quetzal chick has left the nest! I saw her the day she fledged and she could fly really well. So I no longer have to wake up so early to go run around the forest (although I do sometimes anyway.) Now I am finishing up watching the video I took of the nest, I probably have a couple more days of doing that. After I’m ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Punta Arenas February 11th 2006

Punta Arenas Just a quick one because people keep asking to see photos of where we have been living and volunteering for the last month. First things first, where are we? Punta Arenas is in Chilean Patagonia. Punta Arenas is a very pleasant town of about 125,000 inhabitants hugging the shores of the Straits of Magellan. Its origin back in the 19th century was as a trading port mostly for wool and as a fuelling stop for the steamers on their way around Cape Horn. Around its main square are beautiful colonial mansions in a European style, think Paris and London. In the centre of the square is a bronze statue of Magellan and some native indians which you may recognize from Michael Palin´s Pole to Pole programme. This is the place where he waited for ... read more

South America » Paraguay February 11th 2006

The heat had now gained momentum, and it was baking as we approached Paraguay ( 35 degrees ). The drive from Salta to the border was long, so we stopped tro camp at a secluded site overnight, next to a service station. We pitched up, had dinner played cards and chilled out. As we were playing cards, a girl in our group ran over to us screaming, there was a snake in her tent! It was a baby Viper, so our driver exterminated it. Snakes!!! We arrived at the border which seemed humble enough, and again the scenery began to change as we entered this landlocked country. Before we crossed the border, we had bought a load of food, meat. This would backfire, when we reached the border, the officials were checking against foot and mouth, ... read more

First real entry and I don´t know where to start! Not done much so far. The days I had in Toronto were great but, it all went a bit quick. Arrived in BA yesterday after a pretty mammoth journey and have done a wee bit of exploring today although that got interrupted by having to stop in a tv shop to watch Chelsea lose to Boro!! What´s all that about?? The digs I´m in are small but, decent enough. The Landlady is elderley but cool and speaks very little English. But, I´m supposed to be here to learn her language so, it´s not a bother. The other resident student is a ukrainian American that´s been here a month already doing Spanish at the school I´m going to and she´s conversing well. If I can pick it ... read more

South America » Ecuador February 11th 2006

So I swear, this has got to be the last trip I take out of the country for a good long while. Every single excursion I've taken has been amazing but this is too much, wouldn't you all agree? Time to stay put for a while... Anyway, I regret to inform all you dedicated fans of the travelblog that this one is severly lacking in details compared to blogs past. The purpose of the Ecuador trip was to attend one of my closest friends from graduate school's wedding to an Ecuadorian shaman/energy worker. The wedding took place on an archelogical site in Cuenca, followed by a reception the next evening that included the town band, grain alcohol and fireworks (doesn't get much better than that!). We took a couple of day trips including a visit to ... read more
