The heat had now gained momentum, and it was baking as we approached Paraguay ( 35 degrees ). The drive from Salta to the border was long, so we stopped tro camp at a secluded site overnight, next to a service station. We pitched up, had dinner played cards and chilled out. As we were playing cards, a girl in our group ran over to us screaming, there was a snake in her tent! It was a baby Viper, so our driver exterminated it. Snakes!!! We arrived at the border which seemed humble enough, and again the scenery began to change as we entered this landlocked country. Before we crossed the border, we had bought a load of food, meat. This would backfire, when we reached the border, the officials were checking against foot and mouth, ... read more

First real entry and I don´t know where to start! Not done much so far. The days I had in Toronto were great but, it all went a bit quick. Arrived in BA yesterday after a pretty mammoth journey and have done a wee bit of exploring today although that got interrupted by having to stop in a tv shop to watch Chelsea lose to Boro!! What´s all that about?? The digs I´m in are small but, decent enough. The Landlady is elderley but cool and speaks very little English. But, I´m supposed to be here to learn her language so, it´s not a bother. The other resident student is a ukrainian American that´s been here a month already doing Spanish at the school I´m going to and she´s conversing well. If I can pick it ... read more

So I swear, this has got to be the last trip I take out of the country for a good long while. Every single excursion I've taken has been amazing but this is too much, wouldn't you all agree? Time to stay put for a while... Anyway, I regret to inform all you dedicated fans of the travelblog that this one is severly lacking in details compared to blogs past. The purpose of the Ecuador trip was to attend one of my closest friends from graduate school's wedding to an Ecuadorian shaman/energy worker. The wedding took place on an archelogical site in Cuenca, followed by a reception the next evening that included the town band, grain alcohol and fireworks (doesn't get much better than that!). We took a couple of day trips including a visit to ... read more

See some movies associated with this blog Our plan when we left San Juan was to head for Salta, but we realised that we'd probably have to return there later to take a bus to Chile. So we took a "clever detour" and headed instead for a place called Jujuy. Jujuy is a bit of a dump of a town, but a major stop on many bus routes around the area. In fact we found out too late that being such a major "bus stop", all the routes through to Chile had to come here anyway, meaning our "clever detour" was a waste of time and now we were going to double up on our route. That'll teach us to do our homework properly next time. We stayed in the local Hostelling International which we later ... read more

87%. Not bad considering I really didn´t like my teacher and spent all my time partying! So Principiante 2A in Santiago on Monday... So, last night was not quite as intended. Finally managed to book a table at La Cabrera last night. Had one for 15 people, but had to eat early (booked for 9pm). I thought that would be plenty, until I started to make a list of people to invite!!! Once I was somewhere into the 20´s I realised I´d have to be real selective. Well, the chosen few really were ucky, because the food was out of this world. Like the dumbass that I am I forgot to change the battery in my camera, and it was dead as the proverbial dodo. So I don´t have pictures of what arrived infront of me, ... read more

We're off to visit with Holden and Julia as they continue their around the world adventure. Eight days in Argentina - too few, we are to learn. They are having unseasonably hot weather, we are told by every cab driver we meet. But coming from the rainy northwest to summer is a pleasure. Sundresses, shorts and flip flops.... read more

I'm getting feedback that all this talk of beaches is making people back in the cold and wet UK jealous so I'll not mention the last week much, except the turtles, the sand dunes and how well my sun tan is progressing. I thought though it would be nice to tell you a bit about Cameron 'cos he's quite cool and I'm getting rather fond of him. The first rule in the "10 ways to upset your crew" list is to call Cameron a bus, we think this is just because the crew don't want to be known as bus drivers. The only exception is when we go through tolls, or get stopped by police in "no truck" zones when you will hear the crew swear blind that it's a bus. So I guess you'd say ... read more

Hola all. I wanted to start by putting down a thought I have had recently about travelling, although it takes a little background information to make sense. In cognition there is a division between bottom-up and top-down "information flow" in the brain. Basically this is the difference between information, like sound waves hitting your ear drum or light rays hitting your retina, going towards your mind (phenomenological field, or ongoing conscious experience) and memories and cognition finding a place for this bottom-up information. In cognition, until very recently, the mind has been seen as mostly bottom-up information flow. So you look at something, says the cognitive scientist, it goes through "filters" and eventually leads to a perception, such as "I am looking at a dog". However, philosophers as old as Plato, have recognized that the story ... read more
