My next trip was by narrow gauge railway through the rainforest (see photo 1) to Morretes. Near there I lived for a week in a cabin in the rainforest (see photo 2). I did go for walks in the rainforest (see photo 3). A nice relaxing time away from mobile signals and internet. Sending emails required getting a 15 minute lift to an internet café in Morretes. * Mi siguiente viaje fue por el ferrocarril de vía estrecha a través de la selva tropical (ver foto 1) a Morretes. South America » Brazil » Paraná » Curitiba February 22nd 2014

While in Curitiba I went on a tour of the Vila Velha state park. There are several rock columns there made of layers of different types of sediments. As the top layers are harder than the lower layers erosion causes them to taper towards their bases (see photo 1). Best to get there soon if you want to see them; the top fell off one of them three years ago. There are also man-made marvels in Curitiba. They constructed two spaceships, including attached booster rockets, from wood (see photo 2). Unfortunately the first one failed when they attempted to launch it but the second one remains there as a testament to a brave early space programme that was later abandoned. I was also able to get a rare photograph of one of the local trolls. They ... read more

South America » Brazil » Paraná » Iguaçu Falls February 21st 2014

From Asuncion I wanted to go and visit the Iguaçu Falls. The only direct bus was to the Brazilian side of the falls (they are on the Brazilian-Argentinian border) so here I am in Brazil. I visited both sides of the falls and they are absolutely spectacular (see photos 1 and 2). I would urge anyone who gets the chance to go and visit them. However, I noticed just in time an attack by a vampire butterfly (see photo 3). I thinks I managed to discourage him before he could suck my blood and he flew off into the jungle where I think I noticed the early stages of a transmogrification into a Transylvanian count. *** Desde Asunción quería ir a visitar las Cataratas del Iguazú. El único autobús directo era al lado brasileño de las ... read more

Spending a week in Puerto Iguazu, which is so close to the Brazilian border town of Foz do Iguacu, we decided it would be a shame not to take a wee trip across to see what Brazil has to offer. Any people we spoke to told us that it was worth the visit, that it was a nice little town and that it was pretty enough. Given that people told us not to go next nigh or near Paraguay, we trusted that it must be worth the visit, if even only to say that we had been in Brazil given that we didn't have the time of the budget to travel further in Brazil to any of the more noteworthy cities like Rio or Porto Alegre. It is well connected to Puerto Iguazu, and you can ... read more

After 16 hours of wafts of chemical toilet and very little sleep, we arrived in the city of Foz Do Iguacu tired and a little grumpy. After the initial confusion of how to work the busses in town and a few wrong turns later we arrived at our base for the Brazilian side of the falls; Favela chic. We definitely understood the 'Favela' side of the name but couldn't quite work out the 'chic' part. It was pretty basic but what more can you expect for £11 a night including breakfast in Brazil?! We dumped out bags and off we headed to one of the top things to do on our trip...the mighty Iguazu falls! With the falls forming the border between Argentina and Brazil, the falls can be viewed from both countries, with both sides ... read more

South America » Brazil » Paraná » Iguaçu Falls January 1st 2014

I am traveling around Brazil for two weeks with my parents David and Lupe who are semi-retired and have always wanted to visit Brazil. I am their daughter/travel guide and I have also always wanted to experience Brazil. We left LAX not believing we were actually going to Brazil. It’s weird how your mind stops you from believing it until you see it. The flight wasn’t bad. Korean air has great food and movies. In the airport we were given the royal treatment because of mom’s hurt foot and her new walking cane. People over 70 are considered “prioridade” in Brazil. Everywhere we went people gave up their seat for my mom and papi. The condo I booked ended up being a fail. The apartment made papi wish he had his tools which was not how ... read more

Wednesday 25th December (Odyssey Day 47) Christmas! Well Christmas day has arrived in Brazil. As much as we all would have loved to have a bit of a sleep in, the sun was up and therefore our tents were a little too hot to stay in! The campsite provided a breakfast that most of us decided to skip, as we had planned for eggs on toast for brekkie at 1000 in the cook hall. Something everyone had agreed would be a nice treat. There were quite a few people who didn’t feel like it was really Christmas since it is summer. Most of the group being from the UK, they were missing their cold weather and roast turkey dinner. Cook group six had volunteered to do Christmas meals and so we left it to Danielle, Ellie, ... read more

Tuesday 24th December (Odyssey Day 46) Getting dropped into town this morning, our first stop was a bank. We found an HSBC and managed to get some money from the ATM. Unfortunately some cards trigger a maximum withdrawal from the local bank and you can only get out 300 real per day. I believe it is a security thing and while that’s good, it’s also really frustrating. A few of us then caught a local bus to Iguazu falls. The bus was interesting, when we boarded we didn’t pay the bus driver – instead there was a turnstile just behind him with an operator who took the money and let you through. I’ve never seen a setup like this before, but it did make each stop much quicker as the driver didn’t have to worry about ... read more

Sunday 22nd December (Odyssey Day 44) An 0800 departure today but everyone was up earlier than this. Partly because we are now accustomed to getting up early, but more due to the fact that the bloody dogs were making a racket all night! The track this morning was a bit rough and rather sandy in a few spots. We had to dig out the sand mats at one point when the truck got stuck. Made a stop at a little town that I can’t actually remember the name of late in the morning to do a shop. Once again clearing out the local shop of beer cans to stock up the bar. Again it is sweltering hot and I’m not sure I want to know what the humidity is here at the moment. The campsite tonight ... read more
