When we left home a month ago we had been to see Icehouse and Alex Lloyd the night before and I couldn't get the chorus from Alex Lloyd's song 'Amazing' out of my heard. I think the phenomenon is known as an ear worm? Anyhow, after last night's performance I have a new ear worm, I just don't seem to be able to get 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' out of my head!! Annoying ear worm aside, this morning we took a short flight from BA to the airport on the Argentinian side of the Iguazu Falls which is spelt variously: Iguazu, Iguasu, Iguassu or Iguaçu Falls. That's probably the Argentinian, Brazilian, English and Paraguayan spellings?! Humph, it was a short flight, but our 11.15am flight was delayed until after noon. Just what we needed, more ... read more

... read more

We left our cool Airbnb place in Buenos Aires and headed to the local airport for our flight up to Puerto Iguazu on the Argentine side of the falls. For once the travelling went without a hitch and we managed a sneak peak of the falls whilst we were landing. Once we arrived we were hit with the jungle humidity! It was in the mid 30s and all of our clothes automatically felt damp with the moisture in the air. After spending the night in a room that had no air conditioning (just a really squeaky ceiling fan that looked like it was about to fall on us at any moment) we were a little tired but headed to the National Park on the Argentine side of the falls. We were told there are more trails ... read more

“Everything?” I asked, wide eyed with fear, “All of the bags?” “They took everything,” the girl said, “They don’t care. They cut off the bus with their cars. They had big guns. Made the bus driver pull over to the side of the road. Another car came up from the back. Four more guys jumped out and ran up to the bus’s door. There was no fight. They just took everything and left. That’s what happened. That’s Brazil.” The girl telling Jon and I the story was from Israel. She was of course talking about her Brazilian public transportation experience. …The same 26hr. bus from Iguazu Falls to Rio that Jon and I were to take just 24 hours from now. We met this girl on the bus that took us from the Argentinean side of ... read more

Our first impressions of Brazil may be slightly colored, as the two places we visited so far are both spectacular wonders of nature. The Iguazu Falls are truly impressive, with some 275 separate falls and spanning approximately 2,5 km. As Eleanor Roosevelt said when she first saw them: "Poor Niagara!" We viewed them from both the Argentinian and Brazilian side - in Argentina you mainly walk on top of the falls via boardwalks, whereas in Brazil you have an overall view over the whole area. We have to admit, our expectations weren't too high, as we thought the falls would be one big touristy circus. In a way it is. As you enter Iguazu National Park, it's as if you enter a Disney amusement park with restaurants, souvenir shops, trains, buses and walk ways. However, once ... read more

So there I was sat in my dorm, surrounded by my other eleven dorm-mates. After another night without much sleep and two flights, I was exhausted. From the 33⁰C heat of Brasilia, it was a relatively chilly 16⁰C here in Foz do Iguacu. It was raining. Hard. I wasn’t feeling particularly sociable and I had administrative shit to sort out. I was feeling pretty miserable. I wanted my hotel room back. That night, I was supposed to have a quiet, early one – but by that stage I thought it’d better to try and make some friends to feel a bit more comfortable in my new surrounds rather than moping around alone. I got talking to two Brits in the hostel’s outdoor common area – Billy and Lloyd – and a Dutch guy, Siros. I didn’t ... read more

We arrive at Pousada Son Mehu, sooo close to the bus station and the huge Muffeta shopping center. Being mentioned in LP has really made this a busy place. Dinner is at the Churasco just up the street, luckily Robin is no longer a vegetarian. It's so good and convenient that we go back the next night as well. Sunday we take the 120 bus to the Falls, and hit the trails. An excellent day! We took the boat ride under the falls, and nothing, absolutely nothing, stays dry. Day 2 we take the bus out to the Buddhist Monastery, but it is indeed closed on Mondays. Still, the bus ride gives us a chance to see the outskirts of the city, and some of the neighborhoods. We also decide to take the plunge and hit ... read more

Hey People, Iguassu Falls was created as the result of a volcanic eruption that left a large crack in the earth. Taller than Niagara Falls (and twice as wide), Iguassu consists of 275 cascading falls spread out over nearly 2 miles (3.2 km) in a horseshoe shape. During the rainy season, between November and March, the rate of water that flows over the falls can reach more than 450,000 cubic feet (12,750 cubic m) per second. In short, it’s a phenomenal natural wonder that we want to see from as many angles as possible, which is why we are going over to the Brazilian side today to see the falls. After our free breakfast at the hostel, the Viator Company who we booked through picked us up again. Leaving Puerto Iguazú behind, we crossed the border ... read more

Thursday 9thJuly 2015 We came back to Brazil yesterday, back to the same hotel as before in Foz de Iguazu. The weather has been pretty bad all week. It was really lucky that we went on the speedboat last Sunday, because since then, until today, it has been nonstop rain and dark grey skies; pretty dismal. It brightened a bit this morning, although it was still very cloudy, no sunshine, so we went to a bird sanctuary just about a half hours walk from the hotel. The reason that we came back to Foz, was to treat ourselves to a helicopter trip over the falls. We have been both sides and under them, so we thought we would “round off” by flying over them. Such flights are not on offer in Argentina, only here in Brazil. ... read more

Upon seeing the Iguazu Falls for the first time, Eleanor Roosevelt exclaimed “Poor Niagara”! Iguazu is wider than the Victoria Falls and higher than Niagara. Yet when we were children, we learnt all about Niagara and Victoria in school, but we had never heard of Iguazu, which, incredibly, only became a World Heritage Site in the 1980s. When one reads things like this quote, from a former US First Lady, one becomes afraid of disappointment, as we were a bit disappointed with Machu Picchu after all the hype. “Poor Niagara”? Surely not! We visited Niagara many years ago, in 1981, and it has remained to this day, the most outstanding natural world wonder that we have ever seen. Going on the little ... read more
