Wednesday 9th April (Odyssey Day 152) We left Huaraz at 0830 this morning, well just after actually since we were running a bit late. Emma gave a mini briefing and told us she would go through the rest of the itinerary for the trip at dinner tonight. There had been a few whispered complaints circling among the group about not knowing what was coming up in the next section after Peru, and though I’d rather not look too far ahead myself, I do understand the desire to know what is coming in more detail. We headed back toward the coast again, to the southern part of Peru. It was a lovely drive back through the mountains toward the coastal plains once more. However the stop for tonight was to be just before the plains, as we ... read more

Sunday 6th April (Odyssey Day 149) Breakfast was set for 0700 and the whole of cook group was there early for a change! My new group is Group 4, consisting of myself, Mike, Hannah and Bartley this time. No complaints from me, it’s a good group. Packing our stuff back into the truck, Simon managed to get our bowls back from the Tucan cook tent and while there, stuck an Odyssey sticker on a pot. Hannah then put one under their trestle table and our group found it absolutely hilarious. Nothing quite like showing your maturity, hey? We got going at 0800 and today we head for Huaraz. To get there we headed off down the coast for quite a way before turning inland. Then we headed away from the coastal plains and over some rather ... read more

Thursday 3rd April (Odyssey Day 146) So today we departed from the lovely city of Cuenca at 0730, heading toward the border with Peru. We were heading for an inland border that is not frequented by tourists, hoping it would not be too busy. It was a slower day today as there was a lot of work being done to the roads along the way, and some rather interesting detours. Sometimes it’s nice to have a truck so we don’t have to worry about silly little things like curbs, or actual roads. We made a brief stop for lunch in a tiny little place called Puyango. They had a rather large bridge, though apparently there is a petrified forest on the other side which they are trying to turn into a tourist destination to bring in ... read more

Monday 31st March (Odyssey Day 143) We had time for bacon and eggs for breakfast, and still managed to depart at 0830 this morning. We were heading for the city of Cuenca, our last stop in Ecuador. We had lunch in a little town, the name of which I never did discover. Though a few of us spent the lunch hour trying to find a working ATM so we could get out some more US$ before crossing the border. The town of Cuenca seemed to be quite nice on first view, though it took us a while to get the truck within walking distance of the hotel. When we finally managed to find somewhere to park temporarily, we walked a few blocks to the hotel and after such a very long day of driving, we were ... read more

Thursday 27th March (Odyssey Day 139) Leaving the Galapagos Islands was simple enough to do in theory, though we were all reluctant to end our little holiday. We had had such a great time and now it would be back to the real world. Okay, so that’s a bit of an exaggeration, the fact we are still travelling and will soon be back in Peru is certainly enough incentive to return to Quito without complaint. As we could not check in for our flight until 1130, we relaxed in the terminal to wait. I read a book for a while and when we eventually checked our luggage in, I took the opportunity to browse through the souvenir shops at the airport. Certainly the most expensive place we have visited so far, but also some of the ... read more

Sunday 23rd March (Odyssey Day 135) After 135 days travelling the roads of South America in a converted truck, it was about time for a vacation. And so the majority of the group headed off for a break from our life on the road. This mini holiday within a holiday was spent in the beautiful Galapagos Islands, where the yacht ‘Darwin’ became our home for four unforgettable nights of amazing wildlife, beautiful scenery and fantastic food. First however, we had to get there and so our taxi this morning was at 0300, as one of the hotel staff said it might take 1 ½ hours to get to the airport. Mind you, another said it was 45 minutes. In the end it took us about 35 minutes, due to our rather speedy driver and the completely ... read more

Monday 17th March (Odyssey Day 129) We didn’t leave until 0900 today so there was plenty of time for breakfast. Hannah, Joanna and Mike are staying on an extra day and will catch a bus to meet us in Popayan. The truck was only half full today, with only 13 passengers on board. It feels so odd, even though we know that 5 people are going to re-join us in the next few days. We stopped in a town called Buga for lunch and had just enough time to visit the Basilica del Senor de los Milagros, which is the cathedral there. It is quite a grand looking building with a pinkish brick façade. The inside was also beautiful and a few of us actually took the time to have a good look within. Ellie and ... read more

South America » Colombia » Quindío » Salento March 16th 2014

Friday 14th March (Odyssey Day 126) An early start this morning, with Simon wanting to be on the road at 0700. Salento doesn’t seem to be very far away on the map, but it may still take us about 10 hours to get there. We have to backtrack to Medellin and then the road from there is very winding and sometimes suffers from landslides to delay traffic. Surprisingly, we managed to get packed up and on our way almost 10 minutes early. With so many of us, it is usually quite the task to leave on time. We stopped in a fairly large town for lunch. A few of us headed off to a nearby bakery/café to enjoy some delicious pastries while Simon had a tyre on the truck dealt with. If you want milk with ... read more

Tuesday 11th March (Odyssey Day 123) We were having a very late start today, planning to leave at 1200 and have lunch on the road. So we had our eggs for breakfast before spending some time catching up on the internet and packing our bags. I have too much stuff at the moment, and really need to do a bit of a clean out of my luggage. No point in carrying things around that I won’t be using any more (or that are broken). I’ll make time for that at the next hotel. Kelly and Eamon decided to remain in Medellin for another week and meet up with us in Cali, while Joanna and Ann decided to spend one more day in Medellin and get a bus to Guatapé tomorrow to meet up with us there. ... read more

Saturday 8th March (Odyssey Day 120) We had a 0900 departure and said our goodbyes to Maddie and Lou this morning. They will be staying on in Cartagena for a bit, then doing an abbreviated trip including Machu Picchu, before heading back home to England. So now we have lost four more members of our group, and re-gained one. It feels noticeably emptier on the truck now. Driving along some high, winding roads, we saw some random single bright yellow trees. It was a bit odd as they were the only real colour around for a long time. There were a lot of police checks on this stretch and we had to stop a few times, though never for very long. Instead of camping, we stopped for the night at pretty much the only place we ... read more
