I got up early this morning to go with Jeeves to the "Tres Frontera", an area in Puerto Iguazu where you could see all 3 countries of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. We did the 30 minute walk across town in the rain (again more rain). Luckily I had my umbrella and the poncho from the previous day. Still, by the time we got back to the hostel, my shoes and pants were soaked. Jeeves left on a shuttle to the airport to head to Rio, while I grabbed breakfast and my bags to go to the bus terminal. There I got on a bus to Foz do Iguacu, the Brazilian equivalent of Puerto Iguazu. It was quite the journey to get to the Foz do Iguacu bus station for my bus to Rio de Janeiro. First ... read more

Episode 5: Giant anteaters, river snorkelling and Iguazu Falls September 1, 2013 Hello to all. This is the last blog of our Brazil trip, featuring more critters and excellent scenery and friendly Brazilians. We flew from the Pantanal south to the city of Campo Grande in the state of Matto Grosso do Sul, then got a bus 4 hours southwest to the tourist town of Bonito. Our aim was to look for giant anteaters and do river snorkelling. We arrived in Bonito just as a vicious cold front came up from the South. I was aware that this could sometimes occur in July and August and we had packed some warm clothes just in case. The place where we were staying failed to provide sufficient bedding for the weather event, and we froze all night long. ... read more

Our flight from Brazil arrived around 7pm and after a short taxi ride we arrived at our hostel, Iguassu Hostel. Original name I know, but that was the theme when naming hostels and hotels in the area.......... Hotel Iguassu Royal , Costa Del Sol Iguassu, Iguassu Grand Resort to name a few we passed. The hostel was good, it had a nice little bar and pool area. Not that we got much chance to use them. We decided to visit the Brazilian side of the falls first, this involved catching a bus from the station which was a short walk from the hostel. 30 minutes later we arrived, paid and got another short bus ride to the falls. It´s all very organised. After a short walk down the path we reached the falls. Our first thoughts ... read more

Foz do Iguaçu, little town in Brazil on the border with Argentina and Paraguay. Perfect to stay 2 days to visit the amazing waterfalls, the birds park and that's about it. Well, we stayed 10 days. In the centre there is nothing to see, but i know the city quite well now. After 3 days, the day before we had a ticket to Buenos Aires, Nathalie had to go to the hospital, within 4 hours she had a surgery of the appendix .... Conclusion, we stayed 10 days, Nathalie had to recover, and I got time to know some locals, and explore the city (if you can call it a city). If you need tips, I'm an expert .... Yesterday we arrived in Buenas Aires! Friendly people, spanish speaking people, cool city and very cheap... happy ... read more

From Angra we took a bus to Paraty. After one hour the tire exploded, so in the middle of nowhere, we waited for another bus. After four hours we arrived in Paraty (normally 3hours), a pittoresque charming colonial location at the seaside, having around 50 little islands. It is one of the most cinematic destinations in Brazil. Cobblestones are so oneven that it makes it painful to walk on the streets. We enjoyed a horse trip through waterfalls and rainforest with two americans from NY. After a few days relaxing in the sun on small islands and little boats we took a 24 hours bus ride to Iguazu. It is advised to take place in front of the bus, as in the back of the bus a toilet might annoy your trip. Iguazu is located at ... read more

The MST demonstrates the potential of the peasant As the world’s 9th largest economy, Brazil’s rapidly growing financial clout is rooted in agriculture with coffee, beef and soya constituting its most valuable exports. Yet it is one of few nations to have never passed agrarian reform and social inequality continues to blight rural society with 3% of the population owning 2 thirds of cultivable land. Consisting of well over 1 million members, the ‘Movimento Sem Terra’ (MST or Landless Movement), one of the planet’s largest social movements, actively encourages the rural poor to occupy land belonging to others and grow foodstuffs in a subsistent manner, generally as part of a cooperative. Since its inception in 1985, the MST’s achievements are startling when considering they exist purely on donations and handouts. Its successes include the construction of ... read more

14th March ’13 Iguacu Falls After sleeping in and missing breakfast (it finishes at 9am) we visited the supermarket, got some bananas and sandwiches and caught the local bus down to the Iguacu Falls National Park. It was the usual fight with the turnstile and a full bus. The sign said the bus seated 27 and had room for 65 standing!!!!!!!!!!!!! The buses we have been on in Brazil all have seating which disabled, elderly and pregnant people get ‘prefencial’ the buses here have an additional category – obesio complete with a picture of a big fat person, strange but true. I have never seen a big fat person use these seats and I very much doubt they could get through the turnstile to reach one anyway! I make sure I stand well away from them ... read more

After our long and bumpy 16 hour, budget bus journey from São Paulo, we finally arrived at Foz do Iguazu. This town is the gateway to the Brazilian side of Iguacu falls, which lie on the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. After getting a bit lost we found our hostel, Iguassu guest house. It was lush; there was a swimming pool, hammocks, we had our own room with en suite and even a full length mirror, which was pretty weird as we hadn't seen ourselves full length since we left home. Straight away we noticed the weight we had lost, especially Jon, whose jeans were now hanging around his bum! We spent the first day chilling by the pool and recovering from our mammoth bus journey. The next day we got up early, had breakfast ... read more
