Foz do Iguacu
AJ & Hannah at the falls Tuesday 24
th December (Odyssey Day 46)
Getting dropped into town this morning, our first stop was a bank. We found an HSBC and managed to get some money from the ATM. Unfortunately some cards trigger a maximum withdrawal from the local bank and you can only get out 300 real per day. I believe it is a security thing and while that’s good, it’s also really frustrating.
A few of us then caught a local bus to Iguazu falls. The bus was interesting, when we boarded we didn’t pay the bus driver – instead there was a turnstile just behind him with an operator who took the money and let you through. I’ve never seen a setup like this before, but it did make each stop much quicker as the driver didn’t have to worry about money before driving on to the next stop.
I explored the falls with Hannah, Steve, Mike, Eamon, Bartley and Triona. They were absolutely stunning. And big. That’s definitely a good way to describe the falls – very big, very grand, and very impressive. We
had some amazing views and this was well worth the effort and the heat to see.
At the end of the trail we walked, there was a walkway out into the river about half was up the falls where the spray saturated everything. It put you right in the middle of the spray and the sheer magnitude of it all was breathtaking. This has been the highlight of the trip so far.
We then had to take a glass elevator up to the exit – and surprisingly it was air conditioned! So for all of about 45 seconds, we were blessedly cool! At the top was a metal platform. Basically you walk toward the exit over a metal grid and can see right down to the levels below. Hannah wasn’t particularly fond of this flooring, but I thought it was great because it made it seem like you were much higher up.
Heading through the exit to catch a bus back to the entrance of the park, we saw an interesting white and black lizard. Unfortunately I had missed

AJ dwarfed by the falls the monkeys and other animals that had been seen today.
Mike somehow managed to lose his camera between the end of the waterfall, and arriving back at the park entrance. We waited for a while to see if anything was handed in to security but in the end gave up and headed out to catch the local bus back to the campsite.
It was incredibly hot as we caught the bus to our stop, and then waited for the shuttle from the bus stop to the camp. We were all ready for a cold shower and a cold drink by that time.
I had a chance to chat with mum and dad over skype, even if the connection wasn’t the best. It was nice to touch base with family again for Christmas as it has been nearly two months since I left Perth.
After dinner, everyone headed down to have drinks by the pool. Most people were celebrating Christmas while missing family and friends at home, so we all had a few
drinks and somehow a few people ended up in the pool. I don’t think any of them were too upset though since it was a convenient way to cool down.
