Sunday, October 30 We were up, packed, fed and away by 10:00 am. We drove to the cruise ship terminal in Palma hoping to drop our luggage off so we could use the car to sightsee before taking the car in. We arrived at 11:30 only to find that the clocks had gone back an hour for daylight savings, and it was actually 10:30-- two and a half hours before we could check in. Despite the time, we were able to send our luggage on board and check in. Before boarding, we drove back to Palma, parked and did some sightseeing. We walked along the mallecon in the warm sunshine looking at the yachts, ships, boats, etc. There were lots of huge private yachts. It makes you wonder how people can afford them. Soon we came ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic September 30th 2011

I didn’t hear the fog horns last night. We must have traveled out of the fog or I was sleeping well. The ship is really rocky this morning. I get up and look out and the fog is gone, the ocean is relatively calm, we are moving pretty quickly. That must be the cause of the rockiness. The speed is causing breaking waves against the ship and it sounds like we are on the beach listening to the crashing waves. I love it. It is a beautiful day and we are drinking our coffee on our balcony. Ken is in shorts and t-shirt. I am in my pjs. Today is our last day; we arrive in NYC tomorrow. I could sit on this balcony watching the ocean for another month. Went upstairs and had breakfast with ... read more

Geo: 42.4441, 18.781629th Sept 2011 and it is very hot and sunny. The ship docks offshore at Kator in Montenegro and we are tendered off to the port. There are two other cruise ships in dock, one very large old one and a much smaller yacht. We prefer our ship. Once ashore we walk along to the old city gate and into the old town which is very attractive with narrow streets, the pavements of which have become very flat and shiny with thousands of travellers walking over them. The narrow streets open out into squares with lots of bars and restaurants. We stop for the obligatory beer. The currency is Euros and 6 of the local beers cost about 12 Euros. There are several palaces and museums to visit but we content ourselves with strolling ... read more

Today is a day at sea, so we sleep in. Once we are up (about 8 am) we head for lattes and breakfast on the back deck. We then take showers and head up on the deck by the pool and read for a while. We take a walk around the ship. It’s still sunny and relatively warm…about 75…much hotter than I expected!!! We head back to the room and take a nap. Just as I am about to fall asleep, the cruise director comes on the overhead with an announcement! I fall back asleep and then I am awoken by another overhead announcement! Just as I fall back asleep we hear a knock at the door, which we ignore. We finally fall asleep again and wake up around 4 pm…watch a little TV and then ... read more

Geo: 18.7087, -108.721We were both wide awake before 3:30 am this morning… which is before 4:30 our normal, central time. We went to bed at 9:30 pm last night, however. We are overslept. I felt sick to my stomach and thought the boat must be hitting rough waters again but our handy television showed us the boat was only traveling at 17 knots and the wind was no biggie.Today seemed like it was going to be an "okay" sea day because not only did we have at least three items planned to do today but tomorrow, we start three straight days of port days! YAY! I'm so ready to get off this boat and do something FUN!!Today's possibilities for “FUN” on the Carnival Spirit “Funship”…. At least, items that looked appealing in the Fun Times… 9:00 ... read more

Geo: 21.8615, -114.609Hubby & I woke-up early today. We have been good at taking naps but not good at sleeping-in since ship time is west coast time i.e. two hours ahead of our normal time. This morning we decided to go out on the quiet deck and have a croissant. It was barely daylight outside, cool, and wonderful. Hubby went to the balcony to read and I grabbed my laptop and updated this blog. The Internet was non-existent on the ship so I couldn't update it in real time but I did keep my Word document. We finally both got semi-bored so we walked around the ship until we found the 12:00 wine pairing class. For $17.50 per person you get to taste different wines with different foods and learn some new "wine things" and frankly, ... read more

Just at sea again today, which was not good for me or mummy this morning. The sea has been so rough that we were both sick. I didn't even get to finish my breakfast :-( The boat felt like it was jumping over the waves! People were falling over all the place. Me, mummy and daddy decided to rest in the room until lunch when it all seemed to calm down a bit. I then got to play and go on lots of walks around the ship. It was formal dress onboard tonight so mummy put on my best shirt and we all had some pictures taken. I didn't smile much at the photographer though. Everyone thought I loved very cute :-)... read more

Oceans and Seas » Atlantic » Saint Helena August 25th 2011

Saturday 14th August A very warm send-off this afternoon. Awash with gifts and generous farewells we boarded RMS St Helena and left the island with very mixed feelings. Of course, I am looking forward to being back home and have missed Di and family very much. However, the visit has been a real adventure and most probably a trip of a lifetime. Professionally the visit has been an enormous success and I am very pleased with the quality of the work carried out – as I informed the Governor yesterday. We had a most interesting meeting. First and foremost you call him ‘Governor’ but without the intonation used by Dennis Waterman when addressing his superior (John Thaw) in the ‘Sweeney’. He was visibly shocked by the content of our report and he has apparently (as we ... read more

The day was partly sunny as we crossed the North Sea to The Netherlands. I went to the embarkation show and got teary as usual as the crew sang Love in Any Language. Then it was packing and the Hold ‘Em tournament. Came in third and since there was no cash game that money is gone. Grabbed a bite and a Guinness and was reading when the Captain announced that we have diverted to let a helicopter pick up a very ill passenger. Royal Air Force copter # NZ586 arrived and it was fascinating and frightening to watch the action. Of course my batteries died in the middle. The entire process took about thirty minutes. First the passenger’s wife was taken aboard by wrapping her arms and legs around one of our crewmen in a harness. ... read more
