Saturday July 23rd You will of course wish to know about the Tea Dance and how well I disported myself – my laptop Thesaurus suggests ‘posed swaggered and flaunted’ as appropriate alternative words but, I’m afraid, I failed to live up to any of these suggestions. Perhaps ‘loitered’ might be a better description as I found that tripping the two-step or a waltz was a challenge too far for this explorer of the South Atlantic. Needless to say the dance was as charming as everything else found so far on the island. I rejected the occasional suggestion that I might take to the dance floor with the usual unspecific wound and injury collected at a previous time. I know – what a wimp! Saturday was a busy and interesting day that took us to new parts ... read more

Friday July 22nd The end of an interesting work-week. The people I have been working with are absolutely charming and seem extremely interested in what I am recommending. It would be interesting to return next year and see what impact the project is having. It seems typical to me – five colleagues working in the secondary schools and me, working on my own, in the three primary schools. One of my tasks today was to lead a professional development day for all the staff who work in primary schools – one of the topics was the Early Years Framework – in other words what and how to teach the very youngest children. I couldn’t but help think about a song written and performed by the wonderful Canadian singer/songwriter Bruce Cockburn who sang ‘Woke up thinking about ... read more

Monday 18th Firstly, I need to confirm that ST Helena is only 1 hour behind UK time – not one day as the blog entry above suggests! What a good day. First of all the business meeting seemed to go extremely well with a good agenda for development work agreed for the rest of the day. Planning to complete a development plan I was seduced (once again) by the weather to have an outdoor lunch (Tuna Pasta and salad) and then go on an exploration in the old car. Barry in Farley will not be pleased to hear that it was a French-themed visit. Firstly, to Bryce Pavilion where Napoleon stayed for 4 months whilst his house/prison was being prepared. Although the house was closed to visitors (in my anxiety to get going I failed to ... read more

Sunday July 16th Well there’s a thing. Climbing ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ was harder than I thought. I had been advised to take my camera in hand, turn round at appropriate times and snap away at the glorious views of Jamestown. Some hope! I certainly stopped enough times but couldn’t loosen my grip on either the handrail or the camera strap. Serious breathing difficulties suggested that I ought to give up but two people at the top kept waving me on. I couldn’t let down the folk of Much Wenlock by giving up. After several stops I eventually got to the top – in exactly 19minutes. Not too bad really – unless my watch failed through altitude and stress pressures! Well worth going to the top. Fascinating buildings and military paraphernalia looking high over the sea. And there, ... read more

Friday July 14th Well, three days in to our work project at St Helena and we are all building up different responses to being here. I am deliberately pacing my judgement of this wonderful island – I know that first impressions can be tempered by later experience. What can I be clear about? Well, obviously the island is spectacularly beautiful – and so varied. You can be travelling along and move so quickly from landscape a little like a tropical Shropshire that changes rapidly to spectacular and open countryside which is clearly sub-tropical in its vegetation and bird life. Today I saw a donkey grabbing fruit from a tree with a strange wooden saddle. Anyone know about this saddle – are donkeys used for transport here? The people who we have met seem very open, communicative ... read more

Travelblog St Helena 1. Busy making preparations for the trip to St Helena making sure that I've got everything I need but travelling as light as possible. Leaving Birmingham to Cape Town via Dubai @ 2:40 Weds 6th July 2011. Should have a chance to see a little of Cape Town before catching RMS St Helena for the 5 day ‘cruise’. Limited internet on board so next blog might be from the island. 2. Friday July 8th After a 24 hour marathon journey to Cape Town via Dubai, we found the sun shining and Table Mountain clear of cloud – apparently it is not unusual for the top to be covered with a ‘table cloth’ of cloud. The trip up the cable car was uneventful and rather less exciting than I had hoped for. The views ... read more

June 17th, 2011; 40 miles outside of Lunenberg Like any final moments of any experience coming to an end, each one is becoming more precious and special. Yesterday was a windy, dry day on watches except for the sprays that were going over the focsle head and midships. Our watch also did a "white unicorn" which is the similar gift exchange as when our family does the "white elephant". The sun set during my helm hour (#1) and everyone was gathered in silence on the port stern to watch it - gorgeous - with a layer of stratus cloud above it - melting orange sun into the horizon. The watch went by fastest ever and it was the coldest ever requiring multiple layers. The "white unicorn" - during 3 rd hour was hilarious with lots of ... read more

Today is like a full-on fall day - windy, clouds with spots of sunshine. Last night's watch was pretty fun. We had a deck surfing competition, told ghost stories. There were high seas and wind so we pulled lookout back ot the bridge. One swell hit the hull so hard we felt the vibration back on the quarter deck. Cody came running out of the salon for a look. His bunk is right against the part that got it worst. Lots of people got doused yesterday. Man ropes were rigged at midships and the quarter deck and 1 day away from full moon showed brightly. This morning I had first helm and 3rd lookout with a moderate amount of sail handling and no ship's work which meant lots of hanging out on the quarter deck, surfing ... read more

This morning was the funnest sail handling watch ever. We are riding up on the east side of a low pressure system which is giving us a force 5 fresh breeze and squallies. There were multiple squalls wthat blew through and loads of snappy sail handling and I finally did a royal stow chase and T'Gallant stow chase which redeemed myself form missing the last 2 opportunities - luckily (unfortunate for Nadja) she couldn't go up which I think gave me the chance for royals because my automatic thought is "there's probably already enough people running up/I'm too slow" but, I actually caught up to Pania and we did a rockin' fast stow! That was definitley a boost in confidence and accomplishment because I'm feeling like I'm starting to catch up/keep up with the more seasoned ... read more
