If it's Saturday, it must be Fort Lauderdale and Miami. And it's been a really great day. Our first destination was the Everglades where we took an air boat ride. If you've never done this, believe me it is very, very noisy. And pretty fast. And an absolutely brilliant way to see wildlife. Our tick list has expanded enormously today! We'd only untied the boat for about 30 seconds and had seen 2 alligators. Then we saw Black Vultures and a Great Egret. Then more alligators, a couple of large swimming turtles, 2 yellow bellied slider turtles and then even more alligators. The largest was probably 8 to 10 foot long and relaxing on the bank. He didn't seem at all worried by us, he just tilted his head and blinked. We saw 4 more swimming ... read more

20 January 2012 - Today has been a hugely restful day at sea as we've sailed our way down to Florida and into wonderful warm weather. 71 degrees today and 75 degrees forecast for our day in Miami and the Everglades tomorrow. Our tally of wildlife increased slightly today with more dolphins sighted and 2 flying fish. Two excellent lectures this morning: another fascinating insight into life in the White House under the Nixon and Ford administrations then an excellent and well illustrated talk from Gerald Scarfe. His cartoons really can be very cutting but always exquisitely drawn. Like his wife's talks last week, he attracted a huge audience and the theatre was really packed. Not bad for a place that seats over 1100 guests! This evening has been very leisurely with a lovely dinner and ... read more

When we sailed out of New York last night the temperature had plummeted and even though we were well wrapped up, it felt unbelievably cold. It was one of those lazy winds that just couldn't be bothered to go round you; it just blew straight through you instead. But no matter how cold we felt, the view we got of Manhatten lit up like a magical wonderland was way too good to miss. Richard took some fantastic photos of what has become our favourite visit so far on this trip. But really, it didn't have to try too hard to beat Southampton! It was quite a sad moment to leave such an amazing place but we had been to as much of it as we possibly could and have some really wonderful memories to bring away ... read more

DRAKE PASSAGE REVISITED Well I was right; the passage is rocking as expected. Had a great night’s sleep and am just chilling, so to speak. I spent the morning catching up on my blog, checking out the pictures and listening to the wind howl outside my door. It’s grey and wet out there but since there is virtually nothing to see, I’m just enjoying the ride. This is just the second real “sea day” of this voyage. All the others were scenic cruising days with lots to see. There are so many things I usually do on board that I haven’t done; team trivia competition is always fun, the piano bar in the evening, just hanging out at the pool. It’s almost brunch time. Skipped breakfast. Eating in the main dining room for most meals as ... read more

There was no mistaking the fact that we moved out of the Gulf Stream yesterday because we awoke to snow! Not much, but enough to make me wish I hadn't gone out on the top deck with just a short sleeved top! Having slipped and slithered from one end of the pool deck to the other, it was a bracing shock to discover the doors at the far end were locked due to the icy weather. The walk back to where we'd started felt very cold indeed! But it's been a great day. We went to 2 lectures this morning: Sir Alan Collins, the last British Consul General in New York, giving a lot of hints and tips about how to make the most of our time in New York. He was followed by the very ... read more

Sometimes you just need to get away to put things into perspective. Solution: A girls trip with one of my childhood best friends! We left for Jacksonville around 3:30pm from Atlanta and had a pretty uneventful drive down - if you don't count the minor detour and being the victim of some type of suicidal bird. Maybe an owl? It wasn't until an hour after something large flew in front of our car, hitting the antennae, before we realized the 45 degree angle it bent into the metal! Thank goodness it was considerate enough to spare our windshield! We arrived into Jacksonville in time to grab dinner at Urban Flats. The decor is modern and the food is good. I was pleased with the prices and got the chicken salad croissant with their house specialty salad. ... read more

Days 3 to 6 are all being uploaded together. Sorry about this but internet access has been non-existent. Day 3: I don't mean to shock you too much but we actually did what we said we would do this morning. We went to the gym! And built up a sweat - not exactly a pretty image I know but definitely a surprising one. One of the instructors appears to have taken us under his wing but I'm sure he just sees us as an enormous personal challenge. But he's very motivating and got us both working hard and feeling decidedly noble at the end. We spent an hour there and I definitely have bits and pieces that are still sore even 13 hours later. The best of intentions have us back there again tomorrow morning but ... read more

Geo: 20.4816, 99.9383As I have to be up early to be picked up I do the breakfast run to the market first. I leave Jai in bed not feeling too well and wait outside the guest house for the minibus to arrive. A full bus of punters and quite a mixed bag enthusiastically set off northwards. I give a quick 'wai' at the spirit houses by the side of the road as we climb up into the mountains. I figure that any chances of good luck whilst having to spend 10 hours on a Thai road with MIchael Schumacher at the wheel were worth trying for. We stop at the usual hot springs for a toilet break after an hour or so and if anything it looks even more developed than last time I was here. ... read more

Hi everyone - I know its been a little while longer than usual since our last blog entry and Im sure you´re all struggling through the withdrawal symptons...but worry not! Your fix has finally arrived and you can blame a serious lack of internet cafes in Brazil for the wait! We´ve done quite a bit since we last spoke to you at Iguazu Falls including the Amazonian cities of Manaus and Belem, 4 days on a cargo ship down the Amazon River, lots of beaches and a robbery! I´ll try and keep it brief but I know you enjoy my eloquently wirtten tales of our ´adventures´ so lets go... 22/11/11 - Up early and driven to airport to fly from Foz Do Iguacu to Manuas. Im not normally big on landing, taking off or that much ... read more
